The club really should have been more forthcoming, or if that was against Dean's wishes, said nothing at all. Everyone knowledgeable could see he had weeks/months left, yet here we all are feeling shocked that he suddenly passed. It would've been preferable if the club had either been truthful/stayed silent on the matter rather than release the few strangely positive snippets they did.

RIP Dean. Hope the club gets something positive out of the experience, and his time here was good for him. I thought he did an excellent job from what I've heard and the players and other staff all seemed to like him.

It's nobody's business but his family's. The club told the public he was ill, and that's all we as the public deserved to know. If they stayed silent you'd be pissed that they didn't say anything.

These "strangely positive snippets" were because Dean was out of hospital and back around the club in January. His health took a turn, and anybody who heard Sando on AFL360 last week knew Dean was in a bad state.

The club has done nothing wrong here.

I knew it was serious once they said it was an aggressive form of Cancer Saturday.

Before that, I didn't expect it to end this soon.

Spot on. How they possibly could have handled this situation better I honestly don't know.

Your understanding of the events leading up to his death is why I feel the club did you and other supporters a disservice. Of course they had to break the news and stay positive initially, but after failing medical treatment and being sent home after completion of a failed cycle there should not have been positive spin as if somehow him finishing that treatment was a good thing. Questions should not have been fielded at all by staff of the club, and at the very least only the truth should have been told if they felt compelled to hold multiple media conferences.

The only inference that could be drawn from their press conferences and interviews is what you drew; that Dean was sick, but was doing ok and ready to return to the box - if only for a short time - before his health failed him.

The truth is his health did not take a turn. It deteriorated in a direct line and ended exactly on time. I think it was cruel of the club to build his health up and then let the supporters down with the sudden news of his death when they could have simply said nothing at all. More so you have to think of his family in this; to know Dean was dying yet having to deal with all public information about his condition being positive and feeding all of their family and friends disinformation.

They handled it quite well, but sometimes less is more and the truth is more important than getting another positive press conference about the club on the news.

Who cares what sequence of events occurred. The actual people that matter knew what they needed to know. I don't think the club built anything up. He visited the boys, not long after he's back in hospital. It's really none of our business how he was doing week by week. The family deserve privacy and dignity and the last 3 months must have been harrowing.

Best now to pay our respects rather than lash out about a lack of news.

I'd just prefer people pay their respects without being shocked because they had no idea it was imminent.

I really don't get where you're coming from mate. Given so many differences of opinion to this, can we please leave the thread for those paying respects without bringing a pointless debate into it? Thanks in anticipation.

Can you clean it up maybe bigfella?

RIP to Bailey, and condolences to his family. Far too young to be taken.

Also, I realise this is BigFooty, but can people cut the arguing in this thread? Have you considered that perhaps Dean didn't want a running commentary of his medical condition broadcast to the public? I'm sure the people who actually matter, as in his family and friends, knew what was happening, and that's all that matters.

Post of the Year? Well said

Are you shitting me? An RIP thread and people are bitching about the communication process. I'm sure Dean's family don't give a **** how you found out.
Nor should they. I feel for them having to constantly correct their family/friends who rang up thinking he was well as per the media. Not how the general public found out.

I also think that the public could have been steered more accurately or not steered at all.

Replying now because it's in off-topic.

As if their family and friends didn't know. You aren't part of his family and friends and don't need to or deserve to know the ins and outs.

Honestly why would you even go there as if you're some kind of victim in this situation? You're not. No one cares about your tedious and inappropriate campaign.

I don't think you understand my position.
