Sure did my friend.... They were actually conducting a sting operation on the corner of elizabeth and flinders - catching people crossing the road from the train station.

I wasn't the only one busted. I saw more people busted the day after i was fined.

What a joke.

Yes, they do that.

You even need to be careful where you cross. Late last year I jumped off the tram at that intersection, crossed the road towards Flinders St station, but wasnt on the crossing (even tho the little man was green and it was perfectly safe to walk across)- a very angry cop started yelling at us, probably lucky not to be fined in that situation.

How much was it??

Why is jaywalking a thing?

It increases traffic flow if you walk whenever you can. Europe does it well.

To protect the citizens and maintain a safe and secure city we can all enjoy....................nah just kidding its pure $$ revenue raising.

Because we all need to be protected from ourselves on account of the very tiny group of people who aren't capable of crossing the road without getting hit by a bus.

Shell - the fine is $72

Should i dispute this fine?

It would be trouble than its worth would it not disregarding obviously that its a pretty bullshit thing to be fined for.

You'd have to prove that you weren't technically jaywalking (I assume you crossed when the little man was red?) and it would likely come down to your word against the coppers unless there's CCTV footage

I'm not familiar with the intersection but does traffic regulalrly get disrupted by pedestrians walking in front of our cars out of turn? Only reason why I can think of as to why they'd bother other than milking money

Do the crime, do the time (pay the fine)...

Hardly a "crime" though.
To the strict letter of the law, if the cops policed it all day every day they'd get thousands of people through all CBD's.
Just another revenue raising exercise that the poor taxpayer gets slugged with.

It's a big T intersection. People pour out onto from Flinders St Station. Very busy.

Ever thought about joining the police?

Was only kidding. It's absurd.

And it's very poor for police-public relations.

Whilst I agree that it's a pretty novel thing to be fined for, one thing I can't stand is people who complain about getting fined when they have clearly done something wrong. Everyone knows jaywalking is against the law and the likelihood of getting fined is low. However, if you get caught, you've got to cop it.

Have to be pretty unlucky.

Was walking in the city yesterday when a man casually strolled across the road about 5m from traffic lights. On the other side were cops who noticed the man, had a little chuckle and kept walking.

Just another reason to live in Adelaide, the only people who wait for lights here seem to be the Chinese students, they probably get sent to labour camps for jay walking over there.

Probably all Singaporean

has there been a few jay walkers hit by cars recently or some near misses at least? if not its nothing but revenue raising at its finest
I used to work near that corner 8+ years ago.

It's a pedestrian hit hot-spot - saw a few people hit by cars there, all of them in one particular spot (just near the station entrance - people walking out of the station, directly onto the road next to the tram barrier). There's the police station not far away in Flinders Lane so it is probably an easy place to target.

I see a few near misses with trams on Swanston St (especially near the tram super-stop near Melb Central) but it's not near a police station so haven't seen a crackdown there in over 5 years.
