Brad Fisher is on the Long Term Injury list.

fisher was put onto the long-term injury list so therefore there was a spot for a rookie to b promoted and lucky enough setanta got the nod

my question is once fisher is fit to play does setanta go back to the rookie list or is he there the the rest of the season?

I say play Setenta, better off playing him tommorow then say Friday night next week. Give him a couple of games, see how he goes etc. You can always put him back to the reserves.

Big chance to play according to Herald Sun this morning. I hope so, would love to witness his debut tis arvo! Cheers to Setanta :)

IRISH recruit Setanta O'hAilpin is set to complete one of sport's amazing transformations and make his senior debut for Carlton today.

O'hAilpin, who was activated off the Blues' rookie list this week, is expected to make his debut in the MCG blockbuster against Richmond.

It's understood Callum Chambers (knee) and Andrew Carrazzo (torn calf muscle) have failed fitness tests and will be replaced by O'hAilpin and Ian Prendergast.

O'hAilpin had been named as one of three emergencies and was due to line up today in the Blues' VFL side, Northern Bullants.

Asked last night whether O'hAilpin would make his senior debut, Blues coach Denis Pagan said: "We haven't finalised our side yet."

Pagan has let it be known in recent weeks the former hurling star was close to selection.

He was tipped to play against Hawthorn last Friday, but Pagan decided he needed another game in the VFL.

O'hAilpin's debut would complete one of the most stunning chapters in the long-running Irish experiment by AFL clubs, as his main sporting pursuit had been as a hurling star with county Cork.

But his desire to play in the AFL was obvious from the moment he arrived in Australia in November 2003, and went straight to Optus Oval for training.

Carlton officials are amazed at O'hAilpin's development in the past 18 months.

"Five months ago he wouldn't have known the difference between a football and an Easter egg," Pagan said in February last year when O'hAilpin was named to play in a Wizard Cup match.

Bullants coach Barry Mitchell said yesterday the 198cm O'hAilpin had consistently been among the best players in the VFL side this year and was close to senior selection.

The 22-year-old has kicked 10 goals in five games, playing mainly as a key forward, although he also had a successful stint in the ruck last week.

"Setanta O'hAilpin has been pretty exciting at times. He is getting close," Mitchell said.

"His last two games have been good.

"He had eight shots on goal against Port Melbourne and last week he had five shots. Unfortunately he's kicked 4.4 and 2.3, but he's getting his hands on the ball enough which is pleasing."

In 2003 – his first year of senior hurling – O'hAilpin was a member of the Cork team that lost the All-Ireland championship to Kilkenny.

He received two of the sport's biggest honours in 2003 – a place in the all-star team and status as the game's best young exponent.

His athleticism and courage attracted Carlton's overseas contacts, who alerted then-Blues recruiting manager Shane O'Sullivan.

O'Sullivan liked what he saw via video and invited O'hAilpin to train with the club before Christmas 2003.

The pursuit of O'hAilpin was in part the result of severe draft penalties imposed on Carlton by the AFL for salary-cap breaches.

Jim Stynes, the 1991 Brownlow medallist, has had the best career of any Irishman.

But former Melbourne teammate Sean Wight and Sydney's Tadhg Kennelly are also success stories.

Setanta's brother, Aisake, joined him this year and is playing in the Bullants' reserves side.

"He's probably similar to where Setanta was last year," Mitchell said.

"It's going to take Aisake 10 games to work out what's going on, and then I think you'll see him improve as well."

Meanwhile, Carlton is aiming for a record membership year after surpassing its 2004 figure of 32,445 members.

The record was set in 2003 on the back of the `Fight Back' campaign, when the membership figure was 33,252.

"We are currently 1200 members ahead of the total at the same time last year and are very confident that 2005 will be a record membership year," chief executive Michael Malouf said yesterday.

It is the third year in a row the Blues' membership total has been above 30,000.

Hope that this is true, would love to see him play.

Just spoke on the phone to a relative of mine from Victoria. During the conversation he mentioned that on 3AW Hunt said that Sentanta was playing today for the Blues.

Certainly a great thing to see. :)

None of the team had a clue yesterday. Not the game to evaluate a rookie on.

Agree. He just stands around with his hands on his hips. What a complete waste of time. We should be rebuilding, not experimenting.

the kid has only been playin for just over a year what do u expect?? 10 goals and 30 kicks? it was his debut and was nervous and hadnt expirienced anything like that before at least now hes got his first game behind him and can move on from here.

I wasn't talking about stats. It's what he does off the ball that was completely useless. He was loss, didn't have a single clue. There's no way he'll be selected next week ahead of real footballers.

I agree that the signs did not look good for Setanta as far as his game awareness goes but will give him time at that level in a game where we are not under siege all over the ground. I did see him put his hand up and present an option as one of his teammates was looking for an option amongst a pack. The ball came out and he fumbled it but everyone was doing that.

We have too many passengers as it is. We can't afford to experiment at the momment. Perhaps next year we can play the Wizard Cup on it's merits and do all our experimentations then...

Gee, give the guy a go.

First game of AFL, we were getting our asses slaughtered, he was on the bench for 80 percent of the game. Bloody hell.

He took a mark in the forward 50 and kicked a goal... How many guys did that? Not many.

Some of you guys are idiots.
