Oliver Florent
Young speedster Oliver Florent has become a crucial element of coach John Longmire’s team since the Sydney Swans secured him with their first selection at the 2016 AFL Draft. The Victorian has shown glimpses of exhilarating footy on a wing, most memorably when he jagged a runaway goal in Round 4, 2018 to seal a gripping victory for the Swans over the Bulldogs. But Florent, who’s also spent time on the inside of the contest, is determined to continue to grow his game as a hybrid midfielder in 2020.

Oliver Florent
DOB: 22 July 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #11, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Beaumaris (Vic)/Mentone Grammar (Vic)/Sandringham U18

I didn’t watch the game closely, but if he played well as everyone seems to think, it is a bit of an inditement on his professionalism and leadership.

He shouldn’t need a kick up the backside to put in if his team is struggling. He has been letting his teammates, and in particular, his coach down down.

It’s a good learning for Cox though. He will start balancing stick and carrot a bit more as he matures. I think Lloyd should be next to have a reminder on what it takes to be a blood.

I'll go against the grain and say I think he was still just ok last night. Couple of dumb frees given away, poor aerial contests and didn't do much else.

I don't mind him as the sub at all, but I'm not seeing what some others saw last night.

I have no doubt he WAS.

But is he still?
I guess Cox's point is that they wouldn't have signed him long-term if they weren't prepared to ride the bumps, so to speak. In other words they obviously think Florent's best is worth it.

The one caveat to that being that the contract was signed when Horse was coach. Cox is now dealing with the residue of that deal, so he may feel differently. He has placed a greater emphasis on players who can offer something in a contested and/or defensive sense, certainly more than Horse was showing last year, so maybe that puts Florent on the outs with a coach like Cox.

Or, maybe getting the 'Omitted' next to your name and having to lace up for the VFL side isn't seen as the punishment internally that us fans view it as, but rather just a development step that most players have to go through at some point in their careers to improve. So no babies are being thrown out with the bathwater yet.

I didn't specifically watch Ollie last night after he came on but the one time I saw him had me spitting chips. In our left back pocket he fumbled the ball straight into Freijah's hands for a goal. Why? Because he was hesitant, weak, lacked determination under pressure.
Whatever else he did or didn't do that alone in my eyes should see him back in the twos. Maybe the GFs have destroyed him. I don't know, but at the moment he has SFA spirit.

When you look at it tho when you extend someone for 5 years he *should be first picked every week barring injury.

Its a disaster every way you look at it

I didn't see this live at the ground but caught it on the highlights. Wasn't a good look for a player fighting for a best 22 spot.

I'll go against the grain and say I thought Florent was.... fine.

Had a couple of good moments down back where he got us out of trouble and the one turnover most are killing him for was on the back of some aggressive run and carry through the middle.

Sure, the end result is what matters but I thought he showed some good signs of the player we want him to be.

I take on board the criticism of Ollie and agree hes definitely not at his best. But I'm backing him in. Contrary to many on here, I feel he has been a good player for us over the journey. At his best, he's a hard 2 way runner who is damaging with ball in hand.

Depends how much the $ is, if he took the average wage but just has 5 years security, that’s fine, thats also a tradeable contract potentially.

Florents best is pretty good. Sub role is difficult , I think we need to just chuck him into the midfield, even forward, he can kick goals, maybe he needs a complete Wicks type move and become a forward

He's on est. $600-650k a year

Florent is badly out of form. Who knows why? I think he needs to have an extended stint in the twos and not return until he really demands selection (which he didn't based on his performance in the reserves last week which poor at times and only what you would expect from a player that should be in another league at others).

The fact that he is in the first year of a 5 year contract makes for dismal reading. I certainly think he can bounce back, you don't lose his ability, but, for now, he's a long way off it. If he were to become a trade target now we would get nothing for him, unless we picked up part of his salary. Carlton should think about him, they need more players like him. He might get a chance to shine in a new role.

Early on, Florent and Ed Richards were similar.

Both drafted in the teens, both smooth-moving, elusive half backs with pretty good skills.

Alas, the trajectories have been rather different.

Perhaps Florent will have a career renaissance, perhaps he won’t.

Hard to know at the moment.

Some just burn out quicker than others and dont have the will to keep performing week in week out for a decade.

I thought he did well to get in the right positions but struggled to execute. It looked like he was in his head and trying to prove his place in the role.

It was almost self sabotaging, you could see him doing the one thing he was focusing on not wanting to do. He needs to have a positive mindset, focusing only on what he does want to do.

My out of the box idea is to play him again, talk up the positives, and ask him to play like there is no tomorrow - just to play hard and really enjoy himself. His challenge to should be to re-fall in love with the game.
