Oliver Florent
Young speedster Oliver Florent has become a crucial element of coach John Longmire’s team since the Sydney Swans secured him with their first selection at the 2016 AFL Draft. The Victorian has shown glimpses of exhilarating footy on a wing, most memorably when he jagged a runaway goal in Round 4, 2018 to seal a gripping victory for the Swans over the Bulldogs. But Florent, who’s also spent time on the inside of the contest, is determined to continue to grow his game as a hybrid midfielder in 2020.

Oliver Florent
DOB: 22 July 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #11, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Beaumaris (Vic)/Mentone Grammar (Vic)/Sandringham U18

Cops a bit here but a pivotal 3rd quarter, thought he showed some of best yesterday, lot to tidy, but decent game.

Third quarter was our leading possession winner and clutch goal after a courageous mark,

We got the full 2025 Ollie experience, didn't we? As you say, that clutch mark/goal was exemplary. But still many examples of dreadful skills and poor decision-making under pressure. Career on a knife's edge it feels.

I'd have no problem if we kept Ollie on the list as I think he's handy depth. I'm not sure it's what's best for his career at this stage though. He's in his prime years now and it's pretty evident he's not good enough to best 22 for us any more (especially with the number of winger/flankers on our list) but there's also probably a few clubs he'd be best 22 at every week if he chose to move on.

The most productive position for Ollie is forward. He usually kicks them when he gets a shot and he can't give up a goal from there.
Has kicked 2 goals 7 behinds from 14 shots this year

I've never favoured Ollie in defence but have never quite determined in my own mind where he best fits and I think Cox has the same problem.
Ollie recognises this and his sense of belonging and confidence has fallen through the floor. I reckon the best thing for him personally is to move to a club where the coach has a clear picture of how he wants to use him and confidence in his ability to do that job.
Otherwise he'll be back and forth and probably getting worse, not better.
Take whatever we can get.

I rekn there might be a bit more to his dropping than just form. Contracts these days have a bunch of match payment clauses and triggers attached to them. Wouldn't be surprised if the club is being forced behind the scenes to scapegoat certain players with hefty triggers in an effort to stay within the salary cap or have room to move for other potential deals/trades.

I think it was Heath Shaw who went into depth about this in a podcast. Wouldn't surprise me if we've avoided a trigger for Ollie next year for various reasons, warner, new targets etc. Would explain why he spent weeks in the twos whilst Roberts was getting a free ride. I could also be completely and utterly off the mark lol.

His form was awful for almost 12 months in the seniors and only average in the reserves.

Florent was fortunate to get back into the team if anything.

On Gettable, they said there is interest from Carlton separate from any talk about the Curnow trade (heard this a while back as well).

They said he's happy to stay, but seems like a smoke/fire situation.

Doesn't appear to be one of Cox's favourites as he was with Horse. His form has been very poor for a player with his experience. He has never been a catalyst in driving us to a win. I can't remember many/any games where the others in the team have underperformed and he has shone through.

You don't win premierships with player like Florent in your side. I'd much prefer someone with limited talent that applies themselves every game and performs close to their best even when the chips are down.

Florent is part of the swans soft underbelly. I don't care how much we get in return for him. He's a list clogger.

I remember some footage prior to us drafting him.
He moved seemlessly through traffic in some U18 rep game.
I thought then that I'd like him at the Swans.
He has been OK. But being OK does not win premierships unfortunately.
I still like him. Not like he has done anything wrong by us.
He has been a victim of not being outstanding in one role or with one skill (or multiples).
Someone else is always better at something.

I don't think he needs to be that outstanding player we so desire, every premiership side has those no frills role players. Up until this year Florent was part of the glue that held our transition together. He was a major part of our success without necessarily standing out, and consistent for the most part hence being a regular under Horse. We literally made 2 gf's on the back of our transition game which was quite settled until this year. The chemistry in that aspect was spot on and he was a main ingredient in that along with a handful of others.

The only reason he's lost his way is because Cox felt the need to change things, and he was very clearly given a 1v1 contested high half back role. Now I'm not saying it was absolutely the wrong thing to do, but if we're going on this years evidence of our performance in that area then it's pretty clear to see the chemistry in our transition game has been utterly ruined, and it was also clearly the wrong coaching move for Florent. So imo it's a coaching decision failure with a two part consequence. So it's hard for me to point the finger at Florent when the part of our game which we were number 1 in the comp at has fallen off a cliff.

Even if we offload Florent, it just means we still have the same problem and one less player to fix it with. When nothing was broken in that aspect in the first place...

I respectfully disagree. I'd contend our lack of synergy in transition / attack had more to do with Gulden not being available than it had with Florent's contribution.

And by the time Gulden came back in it was too late to save the season, although he did have a huge impact on the overall performance of the side.

Its not about backing yourself in his position has been determined by Cox as surplus.
Not wanted by the club he should really ask for a trade rather than just be a depth player.
He should do what?
He can choose his own destiny. He may not think of himself as depth.
I am backing an existing Swan player to determine his own future.

So the club tells you to assess your options and you forcefully want him to stay?

Generally if someone tells me im not wanted or to look around i do just that its not that deep

I am not forcefully making him do anything.
I have no control over Ollie's future.
He is in control of his own future and I respect that.
Do you?

Just on this - one of the things ive notice about him is that he has noticeably bulked up in recent seasons and looks more like a 1970s/80s player - like a darren millane body shape. When he first entered the league it was his elusiveness which got him the game because he was so quick on his feet. I wonder whether they didnt make a mistake with him turning him into a heavier set defender
