Gotta feel for Ethiopia's Asseffa in the women's marathon. Has lost in Paris (3) and here today (2) in a combined 5 seconds. Would be heart breaking to be so close in back to back global marathons.

Bruce must be getting old, as when Assefa and Jepchirchir entered the stadium together and he said he can't remember another marathon where this has happened, I immediately thought of the late Kerryn McCann's 2006 Comm Games marathon at the MCG and the roar of a full MCG driving her to the win.

I remember thinking at the time watching the race, that the poor young Kenyan runner Koskei, had no chance with 90k barracking against her.

5 minutes after the finish Bruce mentioned the 2006 marathon and said how could he forget it. He was working with 3AW and the late Clinton Grybus at those games as I listened into the network calls of some races on 2GB when I lived in Sydney.

The only other race that I can think of that was similar, was the 1996 men's marathon when South African runner Josia Thugwane entered the stadium 20m in front of a Korean and Kenyan runner who were running side by side.

They had to run about 200m to the finish line and you had the 3 medallists all in the stadium at the same time, the margin was 3 seconds like in Paris last year when Hassan beat Asseffa, and the South Korean put about a 4 or 5 second gap into the Kenyan. The time difference between gold and bronze was less than 10 seconds.

It was South Africa's first athletics gold medal after being reinstated post apartheid. They didn't win gold in Barcelona in any sport and breaststroker Penny Haynes had won gold in the 100m and 200m breastroke in the first week of Atlanta.

He talked about Kerryn in Melbourne for quite some time.

Perhaps his initial comment was about marathons at the World level, not Commonwealth.
Nah, he said he's never seen anything like it and then 5 minutes or 10 minutes after the race ended, either he remembered or someone reminded him and he said he had forgotten about McCann and he and Tamysn talked about that race for the next 5 minute.

Anyway, Bruce IS getting old - and dealing with cancer - but I'm still thankful he is doing athletics commentary for us.

And - I hope - for years to come.
The yanks via ESPN got the coverage of the marathon. They would have liked him talking about Sullivan and McLean when they were out in front for about 12-15km.

Not sure if they took coverage when 1500m heats were on and the yanks heard Bruce and Tamsyn talk about the Aussie hopes.

Was at work so missed the morning session, what happened to our boys in the 1500m? Meyers doesn’t sound too surprising given his fitness recently.

Spencer gassed out. Led for most of the way but when the heat was turned on had nothing left

Myers just got into bad positions and got caught trying to catch up

Neither bad runs just opportunities missed

4 heats of 15 and top 6 of each heat went thru to 2 x 12 SFs.

Thomas isn't experienced enough so no surprise he didn't progress. Spencer wasn't good enough to finish top 6.

Meyers stuffed it up and showed his inexperience. In Diamond league and other big Euro meets, there are pace makers and he just runs behind the pace maker or 2 or 3 back and a lot of times its one long file rather than a big bunch.

He made the mistake of being boxed in and when he went wide he got bumped and spent too much energy it seems, then went back inside against the rail and had to try and force his way thru again. As Bruce said its a lack of experience. Yank Hocker showed how to run it, go wide in the straights, avoid the pushes, shoves, and bumps, get in front with 500m to go and stay there.

Drummond and other's the following link is the SBS On Demand page where you can watch;

1 Live coverage
2 Full sessions replays
3 Mini summary of each session - each video is about 25 minutes
4 The Aussie focus videos. So far they are between 15, 30 and 40 minutes for the 3 sessions so far, depending on how many Aussie competitors are in each session.

All 3 sessions versions of Full, Mini and Aussie are up, and usually go up within 2 or 3 hours of the sessions ending.

Well done Reece Holder. Was in front with 15m to go was in front for 250m. Died a bit in last 40m, but hung on to get 2nd and into the SFs. Almost a PB. 44.54 is just 0.01 slower than heat in Paris.

These are Track and Field News' up dated top 10 predictions for Oz. Tipping only 2 medals.

A month ago they predicted Olyslagers for Silver and Patterson for Bronze in the high jump, Hull Bronze in the 1500m and Denny for Bronze in the Discus. I posted their mid August predictions at post

21 year old Rebecca Henderson finished 9th. The champion medal winning Oz female walkers at world champs or Olympics, Kerry Saxby-Junna, Jane Saville and Jemmia Montag are the only ones to finish higher than 9th and they were older when they did, 25+ years old.

Olivia Sandery finished 14th and Allanah Pitcher 19th. In the men's Rhydian Cowley finished 11th.

Last night Lauren Ryan finished 9th in the 10000m (31:27.78) - the 2nd best result ever for an Australian woman in a Global Championships - Benita Willis finished 8th in 2003 World Champs.

I'm probably being a bit picky here but I have noticed something - the starter seems to he holding the athletes in the "set" position for a long time. It feels like around 3 seconds or something. Seems to be a bit too long in my opinion.

Anyone here an athletics starter/official and can comment on this?
Its not just you, I've noticed it and both Bruce and Tamsyn have mentioned it.

Bummer Hall after pushing hard faded and finished 7th and just missed the final. Hailu picked herself up after the fall and finished 3rd or 4th and qualified.

Shithouse coverage of men's high jump but 13 men cleared 2.25 including Aussie Yual Heath to make his first global final. I don't think anyone had a crack at 2.28.
