Whats wrong with the AFL? Seriously it shouldn't be this difficult to tune into a game online in this day and age.
As I'm in Sydney and in their anal-retentive vision 7mate yet *again* has decided that a GWS game is going to be screened instead of the pies one tonight.

I don't want to wait until tomorrow to download it, want to watch it live tonight. So I checkout Foxtel thinking I could signup for a month for some form of Online watch it on your computer thing that would be cheaper than the usual. Such a service exists but only when paired with a Samsung Smart TV. *sigh*

So I head to AFL and their is that bigpond AFL Live TV but only accessible to people outside the country.

So at this point my options seem to be nil for watching on my Mac (hooked to my TV) tonight live. So I bite the bullet and pay for a Singapore VPN and then 9.9 USD for 7 day access to AFL TV Live and yes it works fine. SD quality however but oh well.

Yes I'm that desperate to catch the last H&A game live and yes its absolutely unbelievable that I have to go to this much trouble. How hard can it be for Foxtel to simply offer a Mac/Win/Ipad/Iphone style either Pay Per View service or weekly/monthly no strings subscription.

w***ers.

Moos.

There are a few other options ...

(1) The Carmelia Grove pub in Alexandria (Sydney) show all the Collingwood games live. They usually get about 20 Pies supporters down there to watch the game. Depending on who they're playing, they sometimes get a fair crowd of opposition supporters too.

(2) if you are a Telstra mobile customer, you can stream it live (legally) for a small fee onto your phone / tablet through the AFL app. It's $5 a game or $50 for a season from memory.

Regards the Pub I much prefer to watch the AFL at home so I can focus and be left alone so option 1 is never really one for me. Option 2 i know about but I'll never subscribe to Telstra until such time as they actually offer value....been waiting some time for that lol.

Seriously lets take mobile phones. TPG delivers EXACTLY the same plan as Optus except Optus charges roughly 40 bucks a month I think it was a TPG charges me 14 bucks a month. All plan details the same.
I only bring that up in relevance that the competiting Telstra plan was roughly the same price too.

Unless you are trekking far and wide outside the CBD areas then Telstra Mobile is just not necessary. Or in the case you need the highest HSDPA speeds for iPad etc which I'll grant some do need.

In short what I was really hoping for is a more laissez-faire approach where we have more freedom to not be "tied" to somebody be it Foxtel, Telstra etc.
I understand they bid on things and paid money and should be given their rights but that doesn't mean Foxtel couldn't provide the type of Pay-Per View online thing.

I'm not going to provide any links, but damn, it's so easy to get any sport you want streamed over the net these days, it really only takes a google search.

I've had to watch Newcastle United's first two European games in years via illegal streams, and the quality keeps improving year by year.

That seems the obvious choice for you tonight.

Don't want to knock you mate but I'm on the upper end of geek when it comes to torrents, illegal stuff and generally knowing what I'm doing on the internet.

I challenge you 1 internet to find a LIVE afl steam. You absolutely won't because I've definitely tried and come back to this topic quite a few times over the years. Simple google search will reveal you stuff that CLAIMS to live stream AFL.

But I guarantee you there is aboslutely nothing out there that will do it for free.

I'm talking LIVE steaming here. Not after that fact. Otherwise i'd juse use aus.sie etc...

EDIT: I guarantee AFL (which is what I'm talking about) has no illegal streams for free. Other sports I can't say but I'd imagine so just due to their population size/popularity (ie more geeks to figure out how to do it).

Strange, it took me literally ten seconds to find a stream to Swans vs Cats, not the highest quality, but it would do me if it was the only option to watch my team play.

What the world needs is a premium, legal streaming service that features mult-channel and allows you to select what commentary you'd like to listen to.

I find the AFL TV broadcast frustrating and unsuited to the game. The cameras often have a close up of the ball and who is going for it, but you have no idea about what is going on behind the ball, where players are running to, etc.

It can be a very hard getting a tactical undstanding of the game if you're just watching it on TV.

It doesn't have to be that way. Euroean pay TV have had multichannel F1 Sports Broadcasts for many, many years. Foxtel could show a Birdseye, wide angled view on one channel, and the camera following the ball on a different channel. Why don't they do this? Answer: why should they? They've got a captive audience.

But surely some entrepreneurial person out there could buy access to the feed as a wholesaler and put together a premium streaming service that offer these features?

Yeah, AFL.com has been an issue for yr's, you think it would've been fixed BUT NO!!! And further more, for people like me who use a pre-paid USB stick, it chews my credit real fast if I watch replays. Something really really wrong and the ACCC should investigate.

..not to mention they are like 5 minutes behind to update the "live" score.

The section I highlighted in bold has me in a puzzle. If they can do that for a mobile phone, then why is this not a preference for TV. You know, instead of paying Foxtel for a yr's membership, I'd rather pay Telstra for a live stream whenever I wanted.

Yeah could never understand this.....why exactly isnt stream discussion allowed? There is after all a part of Bigfooty forum thats dedicated to the discussion. Just its not frequently visited.

Anyways back to earlier. Whats worse and unknown to the vast majority of you is that Australia Network broadcasts all or almost all AFL games live and for free. Its just the Australia network is aimed for overseas but if one had a dish here in Aus and the appropriate box then it could be achieved.

Its pathetic really as I could have a set top box in Shanghai with my Paid TV service delivered from the Phillipines with roughly 60 channels HBO etc etc for about 20 bucks (AUD) a month and I had Aus Network on there. Mainly why I got it. Every game live.

Maybe it is the preference? The Telstra mobile service is what I use when I watch games at home. From memory the cost of a full season's subscription is $50 which I would imagine is cheaper than a Foxtel subscription.

Telstra bought the mobile broadcast rights for an absolute bargain ($100 million from memory) so they're probably able to offer access for a cheaper price.

But I could imagine that the quality is better through Foxtel.

Telstra mobile service is only available on mobile phones and ipads correct? And you must be a Telstra SIM subscriber as well I would assume?

I believe so (on both counts).

Wait what! You watch the games at home via Telstra on what? TV, phone? If TV how do I do this, get a pre-paid SIM and then...?

I use an iPad with a Telstra SIM.

... I've never got around to buying a TV, but if I did, then I would just buy the interface cables that connect my iPhone /iPad to the TV.

Interesting, not sure if that would work in Australia due to Foxtel paying a crap load for rights and all. Or maybe I'm wrong?

Yep, you are wrong.

Telstra bought the mobile rights for about $100 million from memory and they have full rights to broadcast every game live over the mobile network. (Which they do).

It works everywhere in Australia where there is Telstra mobile coverage.

I can't remember how much I paid for my Telstra SIM, but it seemed cheap at the time.

If you've got an iDevice and a Telstra sim, then download the AFL app from the app store and you're away!

I imagine that there are Android equivalents.

Ok sweet, I'll research idevice and all that. But at least from next week onwards, all games will most likely be on free to air. Damn! I missed so much this year :(

Ps. Something else to point out is that the streaming of the game over the mobile network is free of any data costs.

Recommend also looking into 4G Android phones / tablets that have TV interface capability - you'll likely get better video quality at a cheaper price.

iDevices are not compatible with the Australian 4G network and look unlikely to be anytime soon.

I got a couple of streams but not needed as i have fox footy. Anyway stream discussion isn't allowed Swooop Quicky

Just a general BigFooty rule, we have no say.

Plus I think if we discuss the illegal streams here, the people who police these things will be all over the streamers and they'll be shut down immediately ( fairly or otherwise)

Thanks 76ws for all the info.

I just downloaded the free AFL app on my Telstra iphone, then was either $10 per month to upgrade to receive the live games ( first month free) or $50 for twelve months.

Was watching NM - GWS live, after about two minutes of downloading.

I've tried to get links to live streaming, and let me tell you - Telstra are quick, did I say QUICK onto links so damn fast that you cannot sneeze before they are gone.

So if anyone posted a link here, first you can judge they are doing something illegal, yet of course do ya job and delete link..

..but **** me drunk, what about us folks who live in remote area's? Give me CHOCOLATE ****ING CAKE!

Well with my VPN connection to singapore and my 10 USD payment for one week of AFL I witnessed us do a great but horribly flawed game. Best 10 bucks I ever spent. Now to cancel my 45 USD VPN connection ;-) 7 day regret period. Strongvpn.com. Anybody deletes this f off. VPN is nothing illegal. Interestingly once it tuned in for a while I noticed on the big screen that the image quality was not noticeably worse than 7s usual broadcast. When you going to go HD 7? Poor form.
