Online trolling and abuse

The Club is aware of a disgraceful comment made on social media following the Blues’ clash with the Hawks in Launceston on Sunday.
The Club can confirm the person involved is not a Club member, nor is in the Club’s database. This information has been passed on to the AFL integrity unit.
As a club, we absolutely condemn abuse and online trolling of any kind and this behaviour has no room in our game.
These comments were disgusting and do not hold any place in society. Our club will not stand for this behaviour and remains committed to holding such distasteful actions to account.

I'm not sure what happened here but it's a good rule of thumb for our board as well. Abuse, bullying towards each other ... sure that's an easy one to handle.

We also have a rule about abuse towards players and club personnel. Some don't like these rules. We make no apologies for enforcing them.

Be constructive in your criticism. Use examples. Don't post if you can't handle your emotions.

Again, I have no idea what this instance was about but we all have a duty of care towards each other and our team.

Agreed, there is no place for this in footy (or life).

Social media can get very messy. Especially with the anonymous element; people say stuff they never would to someone's face.

Makes me proud of what we have here. There are some robust opinions and the odd poster showdown, but the Blues BF board is extremely well moderated and the vast majority of posters play by rules.

Well done everybody :thumbsu:

Was directed at Roughead in regards to his past with cancer.

Right, so some online hero has made a crappy comment about an opposition players health battle and the club have seen fit to condemn it. They don't want that shit on their social media accounts.

Standards of behaviour are in play. People spewing forth vitriol can be expected to be put in check. They can stop attacking moderators for doing their job.

No, it was posted to the Facebook group "The real AFL ALLIANCE"

Okay. Good to see the club holding fans to account no matter where they are online.

That should be everybody's default position and so what if the heat gets turned up, as long as it's not personal and particularly agenda driven?
If one is out of line and knows it, a 'sorry' shouldn't be off limits either.
Some of the stuff on this board is though agenda-driven where seemingly nothing and no one (friends not included) stand in the way of having the flag flown.

Anyway, sad people will always find a way of saying sad things.
Roughead flicks the comments of his shoulder, but that person stays the same unless they address their issues....and they are issues.

It never ceases to amaze me what people think is okay to post online sometimes. I think people forget that it can also reflect poorly on any listed employer on their profile, too. Kudos to the club for holding supporters accountable.

This is actually a really positive thing to see. Far too long have these people been allowed to get away with posting this sort of disgusting trash online. Now there are people trying to hold them to account. Good.

Trouble is these days the witch hunters are often just as bad or worse than the original person.

The person that posted that comment about Roughhead (one of the games genuinely good guys might i add) can **** off.
campaigner doesn't cover it

Sometimes.

But if you cut out the crap behaviour in the first place, then there is no cause for crap overreactions....

Social media is not the greatest thing in our great world in fact i think it's a negative part. Back in my day if you wanted your thoughts to be known you would have to send a letter or Telegram.

Like Harris calling out people that commented about her as 'animals'?
That was particularly poor given one had plenty of time to come back with something decidedly better than that.

I think we should express sorrow and concern for those that require to exercise their liberties via Social Media (any medium) simply to spew vile comments.
These people can't be in a good way, likely have 'real' low self-esteem and maybe just need a hug themselves. (you know what I mean)

It's funny to think that the world has changed so much that a Moderator for internet pages will now be a paid gig at AFL Clubs...

ODN, put your hand up!

I get what you mean.

No point people making a big song and dance about being anti-bullying only then to support exposing people who say stupid things.

Will probably take a few suicides though for them to either rethink their position or simply show their true colours.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet, or if it has, it hasn't been broadcast in any meaningful way.

I was all for the 'name & shame' way of doing things some time ago, but I think I was wrong.
Can't for the life of me see any rational and emotionally sound individual requiring the urgency to use Social Media, just to put down and despise others for no real reason at all.

Maybe the message would be better to express concern for them instead of adding fuel to the fire, by doing pretty much what they did in the first place.

So you guys want to protect the vile posters in case the ramifications cause them to self harm?

Why are you posting? STOP. I saw you looking in my window. STOP! You keep sending me photos. STOP!!!

I agree entirely but the David Warner's of the world are going to cop it for the rest of their lives- and he will sook it up. People were saying ban the boo. I put my hand up that I let a boo or 2 go off on Good Friday directed at Gaff and the Eagle fans did not like it one bit (even though they booed everything else on the night). I don't really care if he is or isn't a champion - I think what he did on the football field is unforgivable in this modern age. But having a crack at a bloke for beating Cancer is a bit low ( not that any of us frequently voiced geez Rowe showed some balls in that contest)

Social media

Pros: It provides a platform for everyone's voice to be heard.

Cons: It provides a platform for everyone's voice to be heard.
