Was I the only one who felt like the Wanganeen one offered a lot of potential but didn't deliver?

Can't put my finger on it but I didn't find it was the best.

Are u ruddy serious???? Brisbane were the best side all year and Port ran over them in the last cause they were fatigued...IT WAS the god dam difference. Having said that port were awesome. IMO Lions win if they were not robbed liked they were.

Remove the splinters from your a*** and we'll talk. Either Port were awesome or Brisbane were robbed? Then again, who really gives a toss.

Good show on Wanganeen.

He said he was uncomfortable with the way he left Essendon a few times, which suggests Sheahan had chances to delve deeper but didn't. Or maybe Sheahan tried but Wanganeen couldn't expand on his response.

Particularly enjoyed the clips of Wanganeen. Remember one with flailing arms and legs :) but others were of him just fiercely attacking the ball. Awesome player.

Also been enjoying the interviews lately with the ones who weren't/aren't media whores.

I loved that Wanganeen and the Mal michael one.

Both great ones. I love Wanganeen and have a newfound respect for Michael.

So interesting to hear wanganeen say he still feels weird attending reunions and functions. Given he was the brownlow medalist and norm smith arguably the most important player of that premiership year.

Just caught up on Wangas Open Mike. Very good one.

Open Mike has been supurb this year

I quite liked the Wanganeen one, it had a nice mix of of talk about actually playing the game & some of the off field stuff. I loved hearing Gavin talking about taking the game on and playing with flair, among all the great aspects of the game that's one I rate very highly.

I've noticed now Wanganeen, Winmar & McAdam through this series seem to hold a certain amount of awe for Gary Snr.

It was never going to happen, but I was hoping Mike would randomly ask Wanganeen about my two most prominent memories of him - hitting the post with a snap on goal from 5m out late in the Qualifying Final against Brisbane in 1996 (a goal would have put Essendon in front and won them the game), and breaking a toe while moving a fridge as Captain of Port Adelaide :p

Didn't he break his leg riding a motorbike as well?

One of the best for mine - first saw Wanganeen as a kid in a Port GF , followed him thru his amazing time at Windy Hill, was amazed Port got him to return home, seduced by the Bombers spin of Maccas stores involvement (the Bombers spin doctors still at this week blaming Paddy Ryders manager, that's nonsense too), the comments about the captaincy, that fabulous premiership experience.
Still uncomfortable in the public spotlight, a great Aussie Rules person Gavin Wanganeen, far more than just an AFL champion.

04x26 - Tony Shaw
- ill-fated coaching career
- Collingwood list was poor at the time
- didn't focus on defensive nature of the game
- should have taken offer to Carlton as an assistant coach

Will the tree get a mention? They can have a photo of it on the screen in the background and do the slow zoom on Tony while he recounts the tale.

I think Mike is interviewing the tree the week after for its side of the story.

So one to miss then. Bloke makes my ears bleed.

i think Wanganeens reason was that he left without talking to any of the players, i get the feeling from the interview looking back he wishes he stayed for another 4-5 seasons.

was good to see footage of him from his essendon days, how easily we can forget how good some players were.

i thought that Mike pretty well covered the leaving Essendon bit. Mike obviously knew that he had left without telling Sheedy, or the players face to face. I did actually buy his reasoning/excuse though, that he was just too embarrassed and nervous to do so.

he was my favourite player when i was a kid, and i was shattered to see him leave. never really hated him for it though, as he gave us such good service while he was there. i can't help but think we may have had even more success had he stayed though.

i did also get the feeling that he had more of a soft spot for Essendon than Port, but that could just be my bias :). Don't think it matters though, think he loves both clubs.

if i'm not wrong though, his son is part of our junior academy? let's hope if he's any good, we get him F/S :)

He gave it away by stumbling with the answer when Mike asked him, wouldn't of been hard to say Port and would of made more sense seeing he played juniors their. Earlier in the interview he said moving to port would of never felt comfortable with him unless they won the flag in 04 backs it up as well.

No posts from the Shaw ep tonight... couldn't have been that good..
it was ok, not one of his best but definitely not one of his worst.

Spoke about:
- 90 flag, millane's death, brother Ray leaving the 90 GF at 3 qtr time
- his brother's suicide after he felt he had let the family down by not playing seniors at collingwood
- his own son being highly rated but not playing a senior game at the pies and how well he took it
- Rhyce and Heath at the pies and being moved on
- sledging on the field and anything goes.
- running into the tree

I think he's the sort of guy who would have got excited about being asked to go on Open Mike and talk about how good he was.

If he wasn't a Collingwood premiership captain I'd think he's an absolute twat TBH. For mine, he's a champion but only by default.

I believe the best thing about Open Mike is hearing stories and hearing about things I wasn't aware of. Personally I didn't learn a hell of a lot out of that episode that I didn't already know.

Poor episode. Nowhere near as riveting as it can be.

I cant stand the bloke. He is easily the worst commentator on TV and radio, so it is fair to say I wasn't looking forward to this ep.

I was surprisingly mistaken. It was an enjoyable episode, not the best, but certainly not the worst.
