I like Bomber Thompson and have great respect for him, what he has done as a player and coach.

However, there is no point going on these shows when you don't tell the truth. Him and Hird aren't mates anymore, him and Cook aren't mates anymore - so to say everything is fine with those blokes is a bit of denial. Thought he danced around quite a few things and probably couldn't tell the truth for legal reasons in regard to all the ASADA stuff.

Wish there had of been more positive stuff about the Geelong 07 and 09 premierships and more Q's on the players he loved during that time and why they were so good.
I've always liked him but I find it hard listening to the guy the last couple of seasons. You never know whether he's coming or going!

Seemed to me that he wasn't being honest a lot of the time during the interview.

Just watched the interview. Although I thought it was good and that Thompson spoke well it was poorly structured, should've started with his playing career and the premierships he won and then talk about the almighty Geelong side he coached. Leave the Essendon scandal and problems he had at Geelong for the second part of the interview.

I was actually looking more forward to the discussion about his time at Geelong but I feel like it was poorly overshadowed by everything Essendon.

Really good point, would have been a good one to have as a two part interview.

Never been so frustrated by Mike Sheahan as much as this viewing.

If he was frustrated, he'd show it but don't keep on putting words into his mouth please Mike FFS.

SHUT UP!

WTF is Graham Arthur?

1380301200000.jpg

His bio in the AFL Hall of Fame:

Graham Arthur, 9/6/1936. Inducted: 1996
Hawthorn’s first premiership captain was a brilliant half-forward flanker/centreman.
Playing career: 1955-1968. Games: 232 Goals: 201
Player honours:
Club best and fairest 1955, 1958, 1962
Captain 1960-1968
Premierships: 1961 (captain)
Hawthorn Team of the Century (captain)
Victoria (12 games, 7 goals)

I understand WA and SA people's annoyance at Mike Sheahan's Victorian/VFL parochialism, but this is his show, remember. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Stop f**kin' whining about his lack of interest in WAFL and SANFL history. He wasn't there in Adelaide or Perth. He's from Melbourne. He didn't cover those leagues. He knows stuff all about it. Even if he did interview Stephen Michael, you'd just be complaining about the gaps in his research, his lack of insight and his lack of respect for the WAFL.

So maybe you should just STFU, and quit embarrassing yourself by denigrating Victorian football legends from the past - great people such as Graham Arthur who had given their entire lives to their football club.

And instead of complaining about Mike Sheahan, why aren't you complaining about Dennis Cometti? He's the guy you should be lobbying to interview the WA football legends. All those years that he has worked for Channel 7 and what's he ever done in that regard?

Yeah I was disappointed, he said alot without saying anything. I would have preferred more of a look at him as a player and then building up the Geelong list etc
Agreed. I actually think it was a badly wasted opportunity.

Mike seems to think everyone is most interested in the doping saga when it comes to Bomber. Most people I know are sick to death of it. Predictably we got mostly the same old riddle laden answers anyway. Pointless.

Bomber is an intriguing character. I would've liked to learn a bit about his backstory and we got nothing in that regard. Also as you say, how he went about building one of the greatest if not the greatest team of the modern era would've been nice.

just watching the bomber one now

it's a shame they start off with all the doom and gloom crap because as soon as they start discussing geelong his face lights up and he's so much more at ease. would've been better to start him off that way instead of bombarding him with accusation after accusation.

Bit surprised to see the negative responses to that interview with Thompson.

I felt that was a very skilled interview by Sheehan. Thompson is a difficult subject – he has to be at ease enough to talk but will also withold when he feels like it. To get that balance right between making him feel comfortable and then pressing when required is not easy. I think it's some of the best work I've seen Sheehan do.

Thompson comes across at various stages as stubborn, opaque and deeply flawed but also likeable, sympathetic and immensely knowledgeable about the game. Sheehan draws that complexity out of a guy who seems, at times, like he doesn't want to be there and who is, frankly, contemptuous of all the bells and whistles that go with the media. That's hard.

People have complained about the focus on the Essendon supplement saga. Bottom line: You don't bury the lead.

Good post, this bit sums Thompson up for me. Likeable, but frustratingly disingenous. 'We didn't fall out. He fell out with me'.

I am so sorry I didn't know he was another 'legend' of your footy club. You won't like me saying this but the whole universe does not revolve around HFC.

Just watched it.
I don't agree with the criticisms of Sheehan's interviewing technique on this occasion. I thought he got it right.
Maybe in a few years time he can do another one that focuses on his playing and coaching career, but right now the most important (and enjoyable to listen to) line of questioning is the ASADA stuff and the fallout at Essendon.
Bomber comes across as quite a shy and insecure person.

his reason for not attending the reunion was really odd.

basically they stuffed up and didn't send him an invite. They all rushed to send him one but he didn't attend because he thought they didn't want him there.

really odd. Didn't expect to see a guy so flawed as Bomber.
