Review Opening Round = GWS 114-82 Collingwood

Despite all our errors the biggest was the AFL’s decision to schedule the two grand finalists to start the season 1 week earlier than 10 others clubs.

Our footy was very reminiscent of a practice game, which shouldn’t come as a surprise especially for the more experienced players who had a later start to preseason
Finally, someone who isn't over reacting

So many passengers. Too many players just missing for much of the game.

We looked slow. Sloppy. Without structure or a game plan.

Fly needs to better motivate these blokes for this campaign because I think too many are still living in 2023. I’m seeing a glimpse of a hangover. Maybe too much contentment lingering from last year to have the hunger to do it again this year. Hopefully this loss snaps them out of that.

Not to discredit GWS either. They’ll be right up there again this year. They’re definitely a quality side and real contender. Losing a prelim hurts and they’ve carried that into tonight. They’ve wanted this more.

But what I just watched, I really expected so much better. That was sloppy disorganised footy.

Despite the ugly footy we played, ultimately our inaccuracy in front of goal has cost us. 3 extra scoring shots and a 32 point loss.

I don’t know. Maybe we can draw positives somehow. This was as bad as we look in recent times. We had more scoring shots. More inside 50s. A lot more tackles. Basically broke even in clearances. Won the hit outs. Had we kicked a little straighter, it could have been a win. And GWS played pretty well I thought.

Think they thought tonight was a Practice Game

Pressures off having to go undefeated this season 🤣

We were beaten by a better side on the night. Our mids were smashed. Our bad players were really bad. The way the ball was coming into their forward line, you cannot judge Dean yet. AJ presents no forward pressure or contest. Our small forwards were smashed. We kicked poorly. They kicked well. A few of their forward marks were taken with Cox not contesting. I don't know what to make of Cox effort tonight.

It's not the first time premiers have looked flat first round.

FWIW… have you seen AFL/GWS first four rounds vs ours. It's a joke.

It's a loss we needed to have. We will win the flag now [emoji4]

The bad stands out.
Shocking conversion up forward. Don’t expect Elliott and Schultz to return 0.5 again this season.
Letting average players like Brown and Daniels kick 9 between them. Still trying to work out who was Brown, I think Hoskin Elliott largely but not sure as no one was getting near him.
Cox and Johnson the standout poor players. Not sure what the ruck/key forward set up will be moving forward.

I dont like the "we kicked too many" points excuse. So many of those were under pressure hence why we missed. If the majority were set shots then blame kicking. Defence all across the ground was poor and usual pressure was lacking. Too many witches hats out there tonight. We learn and move on.
Actually, quite a few were easy set shots at goal.

Best time to play the premiers is Round 1.

Only thing better than that is playing them in Round 0.

Compare tonight to round 1 last year against the reigning premiers, Geelong.

Our effort tonight was polar opposite to what we showed right out of the gate last year.

Plenty of time to resolve, but this one was lost between the ears of the coaches (preparation) and players (desire, effort)

Reef needs to be given a go now. I’d no longer persist with Ash. He needs to find form in the twos before he gets another look in.

Cox maybe needs to be played forward and Frampton second ruck and key back perhaps. Cameron main ruck.

I feel like Frampton would have made a difference tonight. Whether it was Charlie Deans spot or perhaps playing with Charlie and someone else dropped. Don’t ask me who! I could never be a selector!

Oh I agree. Kicking at goal cost us at least a closer margin if not the game, but they didn’t show desire. That was lacking badly with at least half the list.

Why I mentioned a glimpse of a hangover. I hope they snap out of it.

Tonight was round zero and last year was round 1.

1. Surgical in front of goal versus really wasteful.

2. Outcoached. Looked like a really well drilled team versus a talented mess. I think Kingsley might be pretty awesome. Even seemed to have drilled them to switch style when we went into scoring mode.

Cox played forward a lot of the game and was useless. When he is useless he is super useless too as he has zero ground game.

He was in a serious race with AJ to the bottom tonight. 2 useless forwards with no defensive play at all.

It left too much to Checkers, Schultz and Beau who all worked their butts off.

Awesome. This one doesn't count then.
Obviously it counts but a crazy idea from the AFL.
We will have to push through and get to the GF despite them
