Man, if God doesn't know ......

Beautiful Mind gets best picture, best director and best supporting actress. Should have kept your mouth shut Russell.

The Oscars are a scam, but not for any parochial reasons.

The only selection criterion should be the artistic quality of the film and the performances therein.

However, we all know that there are so many other factors at play.

Studios spend millions of dollars on "Oscar campaigns" that result in no-talent bimbos like Gwyneth Paltrow and Kim Basinger winning what is supposed to be the highest honour in the profession.

The voters are largely old, conservative industry types who invariably reward the same type of film:
  • mental illnesses
  • historical pieces
  • feel-good, happy ending fluff pieces
  • the trendy political cause of the day
  • the American option unless the alternative is so obviously superior
The fact that Martin Scorsese hasn't won a director's gong and that crap peddler Spielberg has two is a travesty in itself.

It's a pity that so much attention is paid to the Oscars, because the awards themselves are so tainted as to be artistically useless.

Yeah, the Oscars are a joke. An absolute joke.

Give me the credibility, star quality and entertainment value of the Logies any day. :p

The Oscars, Logies etc make me sick. The most famous, rich and pretentious people in the world said to themselves "We should give ourselves awards and televise it to the world". Awards, give me a break. These people aren't curing cancer for christs sake they are doing a job and getting paid handsomely for it - why should they get an award? I think i'm pretty good at my job - where's my award?

The promo for one of the TV News - Oscars heartbreak......
They must be joking.

As the Brownlow must also be.

.

Alfred Hitchcock's never won an oscar, and "Citizen Kane" arguably the greatest movie of all time, was beaten by "How green was my valley" for best picture, and "Raging Bull" didn't win that award either (Martin Scorsese's master piece about Jake La Motta), and who in the hell thought that Marissa Tomei and Gyeneth Paltrow deserved to win an oscar.

Just like the Brownlow (where Paul Roos and Robbie Flower have never won one even though they carried ordinary teams, and guys like Nathan Buckley look likely to never win that award), it's all ahn excuse to purve on some chicks in thier party frocks:rolleyes:

IT'S ALL BULL****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't see any correlation between the selection processes of the Oscars and the Brownlow. The players don't vote for themselves.
Those directly attached to football do, similar to the Oscars. They then make a big deal about this award and televise it from a ritzy location.

"We should give ourselves awards and televise it to the world."

Great idea, let's push to have a BF Oscar awards & have it televised, be more entertaining than the real Oscars. :D

Porthos is onto something here. I can't help notice how all the major entertainment (those endless music awards shows from America) and sports (AB Medal, Brownlow) presentations seem to be a desperate attempt to imitate the "glamour" of the Academy Awards. These days the obsession around the Brownlow seems to be as much about the fashions the women linked to the footballers are wearing then about the award itself. They are also a conscious effort to reinforce the ever-increasing celebrity status of footballers, and how they are treated as idols by football fans.

In summing up, while the Brownlow has some serious flaws in it, it has 100 times more integrity then the Oscars do. (See Danny Chook's comments).
