Feeling pretty happy with myself

I actually predicted we'd draft both Wright and White, but with pick 40 and 43

Sadly the post has disappeared (not joking) guess that's my luck

No luck involved. You just used the wrong thread!

"My wishlist before the draft
25. Tom Clurey
26. Jesse Lonergon
40. Spencer White
44. Nathan Wright
You can call me an oracle once we get all these players"

Elshaug on Wright: “He suffered a broken finger at the start of the year but he came into the championships probably a fraction underdone but he did a good job and fought the fight throughout the whole carnival and got better and better. At the end of the year he hurt his hamstring but he was still able to do some good testing at the combine. He’s got good speed, good endurance and he is a very tough competitor. He is very good overhead and a good, strong person. We are very pleased to have him. His best football seems to be at half-back at the minute and he can play on the wing.”

Elshaug on White: “He’s got really good speed, a good jump, can really mark the footy and he is a really resilient young man with good character. He is very athletic and tested super at the combine in October. He’s had different things to overcome and he’s done it with real strong character each time. He is a good young man and we’re pleased to have him. He can take a great contested mark.”

Elshaug on Murdoch: “Brodie came up through South Australia last year and played half a season. He did very well as a forward and kicked a lot of goals. He joined the AIS program at the start of this year. He made his debut for Glenelg, he tested really well at the camp and he is a beautiful left-foot kick who brings a lot of versatility to the club.”

Elshaug on Saunders: “He really improved in the second half of the season. He played on the inside in the midfield, played on a wing, had a very good finals series. He is a very determined young man and can really carry the ball. He has good speed and endurance. He is a good person who tested well at the combine and runs hard from start to finish.”

Elshaug on Pierce: “We think he’s 203cm and he’s still growing we think. He was a teammate of Nathan’s at Dandenong Stingrays and he has had a tough year. He played through adversity with injury. He had knee tendonitis at the start, came into the championships and held his own against the best ruckmen in Australia. He broke his thumb just after the championships but fought his way back to play through adversity again and did a good job. He showed he could mark the footy and can ruck and play forward. He’s a good person too with a strong character and we’re pleased to have a young ruckman on the list to complement Ben, Tom and Rhys. It gives us a good profile and we’re pleased to have him."

Watters “We’re really excited to get them on board, they’ll be told to make sure their passports are organised because in a couple of days they’ll be heading to Colorado.”

“You look at our three mids and they are all different types of mids in Brodie Murdoch, Nathan Wright and Josh Saunders. The common thread between all of them is elite pace and outstanding endurance.”

“Out of those three mids he (Murdoch) is probably the more mature body. He’s 86kg and 188cm. He’s a good, penetrating left-foot kick as well.”

“There’s a 202cm very talented ruckman in Pierce who to be honest we didn’t think would be available at that point in the draft. That was a great surprise for us.”

“White has got an outstanding set of hands, is very athletic so with him and Lee coming in this year complementing Riewoldt and Koschitzke we’ve really added some depth in that area.”

“I think it is important to acknowledge the work Trout and Ameet Bains have done. They’ve worked extremely hard and we’re thrilled with the result.”

Pelchen "We had a very deliberate and strategic plan to stick to tonight, and ultimately the first two picks were about getting the best talent into the club, along with the third, fourth and fifth picks."

"The recruiting guys have done an outstanding job all year. There's no doubt the preparation they've put into this draft is the equal of any I've seen in a long time in the game. It's a credit to Ameet Bains, Tony Elshaug and obviously the guys that helped them in Chris Liberatore, Paul and John Bevridge, so we're very pleased."

"We are looking to develop a strong precence in the Frankston/Mornington Peninsula area and to have several of the guys come from the local area we are delighted, but ultimately it's about getting talented players to our club."

Pelchen said the Saints now hold a full playing list with any further changes yet to be decided.

"At the moment we don't qualify for a selection in either of those drafts, but we'll revisit our list over the coming days."

Does anyone else see buddy in white?

He's a better mark than Franklin. He does some seriously eye catching stuff. I have seen him take a couple of superb hangers.

He's also lazy.

If you can instill a hard work ethic and wait a couple of years, then you could have a dead set gun on your hands.

His highlights package looks awesome! Hopefully he can develop and be a dead set gun!!

My thoughts -

24 & 25 were just too late to snag a quality rated Midfielder (not saying they'll all turn into champions!) in this draft.

After Wright there was:
White
Stewart
O'Brien
Clurey
Shaw
McIntosh
Close
McBean
Ashby
Temay Smith
Jacobs
Ramsay
Duffy
Murdoch
Wood
McDonough...all of these guys aren't considered to be midfielders.

Taking White was at the expense of taking Wood

Passing up Clurey???

Taking Murdoch instead of Membrey?

Saunders at 43 could be another Newnes type pick :)

May I refer you to a previous post of mine...

Twenty bucks we pull someone who we've barely heard of for one of our 20's picks. We then go search through the phantom drafts and see they've all been rated a pick in the 40's-50's. And then we get pissed off at our recruitment department which have made some incredible selections and trades in the last couple years and wonder why they didn't pick the players that KM, Chris, Snoop and Quigley rated.

Not sure if anyone posted what Snoop said earlier today:

You ask me bc I think you know what I will say........outstanding!

Wright and Murdoch were two favs of mine and to whilst you weren't keen on more flankers they are players i think who have competitiveness and class. White could be bloody anything so he will test your development programme but lots of upside to him and mail I had was Pies wanted him at #39. Saunders haven't seen a heap of him but he is a competitor and a ball winner and he has a good kick on him. Pierce has got something. He played well in the ruck vs Grundy in the champs from memory and hence thought to myself he has come on in leaps and bounds. you did well.

Draft Time is a Joy, christmas of AFL fans.

The young kids are all going to be champions. Fans can let their imaginations run wild for a little while and in doing so our dreams are the same as the draftees.

Next comes the hard slog of the pre season.

Yep this time next year half the board will be calling for their delising because they havent won the brownlow yet.

Brodie Murdoch - I keep reading on here and other blogs that he is 'like his brother'. Rubbish. They play a totally different brand of football, are built differently and will play different roles at AFL level. Brodie played a lot of his footy back in the SE as a key forward and I remember even last year with ther Glenelg U18's, where he came to prominence, he played at full forward - where he obviously went well and caught the recruiter's eyes. By christ he could take a contested mark! I believe some clubs tried to get him into the initial AIS list (he was eventually added after Dayle Garlett and Jed Anderson left the academy) despite him not playing at the 2011 U18 championships. But the thing was he was never going to be big enough to play as a KP player even at SANFL senior level let alone AFL level. So he needed to learn to play some different roles to help him develop and give him some more scope to be drafted. To their credit, Glenelg worked hard this year to play him different roles, mainly at half back and let's be honest, he took a while to adapt but improved slowly and earned himself a league debut with the Tigers later in the year.

See one of the issues with kids from thew country is they sometimes learn to play in roles through all of their junior years which, ultimately, they wont play at SANFL or AFL level. Brodies flatmate, Tim O'Brien, is another example - he has been playing as a ruckman down in Mount Gambier and whilst he filled in at reserves level and during the U18's campaign he won't be big enough to ruck at AFL level - and so you have the young lads, trying to adjust to the training and playing in Adelaide whilst also, suddenly, playing roles they are not at all familiar with... and it's their draft year just to add to the pressure so there isn't a lot of time to muck about! Many, many challenges.

I think Brodie will go around the mid 30-mid 40 range (his brother went at 41 I think so there is a similarity for you) which would be a great result for him. I have heard he is a ripping young lad off field so lets hope he goes well, gets drafted and who knows - his brother Jordan certainly went very well in his first year so let's hope (along with all of Port MacDonell where the Murdochs come from) we see a lot of him in coming years.
Dietrite - a good accurate summary. Brodie Murdochis his own footballer - very different to his brother - his attack on his ball and agression is afl standard.

And this is what chris25 had to say about Murdoch back in February:

Brodie Murdoch
Not a player many would know much of, again people would probably only know the name because of his brother Jordan. He wasn't part of the South Australian U18 squad last year, and only played 6 games for Glenelg in the SANFL U18s - so he only has limited exposure, although kicking 31 goals in those 6 games has certainly helped in getting his name out. I really like what I've seen of him though, and I know there has been some interest in him already.

Whereas Jordan was a half forward, Brodie is more of your classic full forward. Tends to play deep, and leads at the ball. He leads really well, and is a strong mark too. Like Jordan though, he is also a very good kick. He is not unlike Shane Kersten, just not as physically developed yet. It's still very early days for him, but I'm going to say he could be a fringe first round pick this year - provided he measures in well (height wise).
