Glad I pointed him out to you, Z-Man. :thumbsu:
How bloody good did that red head rookie, Josh Donaldson, look back then?!

Back when they were kicking footballs at someone's behind for 10 minutes a session as punishment followed by trying to kick the ball into a wheelie bin for another five.

How things have changed.

Had him as the next Fletcher.

Sorry, was talking about Ballantyne (didn't make that clear with just the bolding of the quote). .. Milne is a different beast, needs more a medium defender. ..
Needs more of what Scarlet gave him :)

With the season proper fast approach I have been toying around with a starting line-up like the rest of the carlton tragics.

one thing i've noticed is that we are jam packed with A-grade talent throught the mdfield. So much so that there is not enough space for all of them. In order to fit them all in then some of these players are going to have to rotate significant time through either the forward or back halfs. Add to this that Eddie, Jeff, Yaz and Touhy may get some mid field time.

likely best 22 players that are going to spend signifcant amounts of time in the midfield: Judd, Murphy, McClean, Carrazzo, Gibbs, Simpson, Robinson, Bell = 8

then you have likely best 22 who will likely rotate through less often: Walker, Scotland, Yarran, Betts, Garlett, Armfield, Touhy = 7

that's 15 players out of a total 22 with only 4 spots on the bench.

Traditionally mid either rest on the bench or in the forward line. With the number of potential mids we have some of these will have to rotate through the backline me thinks.

Candidates for this I think are (apart from the players who regularly play back):

Carrazzo - has shown he can shut down dangerous players
Simpson - possibly in a similar sweeping role to what Scotland has been doing
Walker - as he's mentioned as a specific match-up for the occassional match
Armfield - as a quick lock-down / dashing defender
Robinson - on special assignment ala the work he did on Fletcher
Bell - don't know enough of his defensive skills
Gibbs - if everything else doesn't work send Gibbs back

Obviously this will only work if these rotations occur within an otherwise structured backline with the three keys being Jamison, Henderson, Laidler.

Competition tight in Carlton defence.

White said the fact new coach Mick Malthouse was a defender in his playing days could help him establish himself as a regular backman.

"He's had a bit of a chat and I'll play mostly down back but with the ability to relieve up forward as well.

"At the moment, we've got all our backs up and running so there's a lot of competition for spots but hopefully I can cement one."

White said he will go into this season with confidence after managing to play some games last year which convinced him he fitted into the side.

Won't be easy going Simon, but keep trying. :thumbsu:

I reckon you can take Garlett & Armfield off your list. Li'l Jeffy will stay forward as our primary small crumber when Eddie goes into the midfield. Armfield has shown a bit wherever he is played, but I think his kicking has really improved and we'll see him playing up around the half forward line a lot more (barring an injured defender & especially since we have so many options down back) as he has that evasive ability to get around players and have a shot. Possibly changing with Simon White from time to time, depending on we need to go taller or smaller in defence.

Anyone else think Henderson has ben veeeerrrryyyy rusty this preseason.

Will he be good to go round 1?

He'll be right. Still not fully extending himself after his op last year.

Has two weeks now to stretch himself fully, but even so, he has still been getting to the ball pretty well. Not concerned for Henderson even if he does start off a little slower than the ideal.
