Each team in the last decade that has won a flag has had a individual style of play, that in most cases has been a big contributor to them winning a premiership.

Collingwood have their contested and disciplined style of play where each play has their own role which in turn gels with those alike. They play long down the wings.

Geelong has their kamikaze type of play, where they play on at all costs and used the centre of the ground for nearly all plays. Risks were promoted and encouraged which revolutionized the way the game was played.

Hawthorn had the rolling zone, which in 2008 was remarkable but was soon figured out and exploited by opposition coaches.

Sydney played the stoppage game.

West Coast played the running game, and created unbelievable amounts of space for their silky midfield.

Where do you see Carlton in terms of playing style?
Are we trying to mimick a teams style?
Do you see Carlton heading towards a brand of football never seen before?

This is something that troubles me...I remember a while back AFL.com had a Q&A with Ratts and I asked him this question and he wasn't all too sure either but suggested we'd aim at a hybrid of the Collingwood-Geelong styles.

Easier said than done.

However what gives me hope is that I firmly believe we are up there as one of the best when it comes to having great individual players and I'm just waiting for the day we play consistant, good team football. Also, can't wait to see what Brown and Richardson bring to our side :thumbsu:

I think we saw it against St.Kilda & Geelong this year. Pace, run & carry, quick ball movement into the forward line, and mobile KP players rotating around the forward line.

However, we need another mode to deal with teams that can engineer a spare sweeper down back, like Collingwood does with Maxwell.

It's been obvious for ages that we're incredibly vulnerable to teams that flood, or just play a spare defender. Very frustrating to watch us make the same mistake over and over, and it didn't get any worse than Ratten's "Kick It To Maxwell" Festival this year. Even teams like North got on board and made us look stupid with flooding. That has to stop.

Got a funny feeling Richardson and Brown will be very helpful and are working with Ratten as we speak on ways Collingwood have combated teams that flood.

Speed forward of 50 I think will set us apart cutting up those defensive zones.

What noticeable difference was there between Collingwood and Hawthorns gameplan by the way in the two flags ? Both full press rolling zones as far as I could see. Pies just did it better this year.

When I read the topic, I thought that the OP was chasing after what our brand is supposed to be... I thought it was pretty simple... the classic simplicity of the white lettering with the navy blue background is possibly as powerful as you can get. There is only 1 club in the AFL that has that combination and is instantly recognisable as being distinctly Carlton. However, I then read the post and he is wanting to know what our brand of football is.

Every other running club has copied our style from the 70's and 80's where we were all about pace and movement of the ball. We could destroy teams in seconds with our pace.

We set the scene in the 1970 grand final with out constant playing on and using the handball as an offensive weapon to keep attacking and since then, a lot of other teams have tried to do that with varying degrees of success.

Against Geelong and St Kilda, we were at our absolute best and totally destroyed then with pace and movement and not stopping to go back behind the mark and kick the ball.

We are slowly coming back to that style again and once everything is in place... well then the premierships will come again.
