Can't believe we over-looked Kane Tenace! Pitty Dunn didn't last one space longer. Yakuza will be devastated.

But anyway, welcome to the club Beau.

#20 Sam Butler
(Central District) 14 January 1986, 185cm, 75kg

Butler has attracted strong interest in recent weeks and looms as a late first to second round choice. An inside midfielder/forward, he possesses clean hands and good foot skills, while he rarely goes to ground. A member of the AIS/AFL academy and a South Australian representative in the National AFL under 18 championships in 2003, Butler was also part of the Central District reserves premiership this year. He has attracted considerable interest from the Lions and could even be in the mix with their first pick at No.18. Collingwood has also been strongly mooted at No.17, while a host of clubs including the Kangaroos, Sydney, Richmond, Fremantle, West Coast and Hawthorn are also in sounding him out.

#26 Daniel McConnell
(Eastern Ranges) 21 June 1986, 190cm, 83kg

West Coast’s final selection in the draft will be an interesting one, with the likes of Burges – if he hasn’t been selected at No.11 or No.20 – and Calder Cannons’ forward Ben Clifton right in the mix. Clifton could be the one claimed with the Eagles third pick, if McConnell is overlooked or already taken. But there is no doubt that McConnell, an emerging young forward/defender, is firmly on West Coast’s agenda. An AIS/AFL academy member in 2003, McConnell has great pace and aerial skills for his size, while he possesses strong endurance. He has also reportedly attracted the interest of Sydney and Geelong, but the hot tip is that the Eagles are ready to swoop.

National Draft Camp Invitee 2003

Now here is a player I would like to see at Hawthorn. Waters is a tough-as-nails defender who has great courage and is willing to do anything for his side. Only Ryley Dunn springs to mind when thinking of harder footballers this year.

The fact he is a left footer also makes him a favourite of mine! Beau spent most of his time in defence for SA, although he did go forward after copping a knock against Vic Country, and was an inspirational part of their win.

Like a lot of lefties, he is a delightful kick on that side. Not so sure about his right though. He is very strong overhead - plays much taller than 6'1. His attack on the footy is great to watch - real bull-at-a-gate stuff. He takes a lot of marks in defence, and although he is too short to play key position, I reckon he could make it at AFL playing as a 3rd defender, such is his overhead ability and work rate.

Waters played seniors in the SANFL this year, was All Australian and invited to draft camp. I reckon he is worth as high as a 2nd round pick, but might go lower due to his in-between height.

McConnell sounds a bit Embley-ish.

I'm glad we picked at least one potential KPP.

I'm happy about Waters - I like the sound of his toughness. Butler's the one that has me scratching my head though. That one has caught me a bit by surprise.

Welcome to the club, lads.

V surprised to see no Burges, some interesting selections there.

Waters seems to be selected as a tight small defender/tagger, which is certainly something we lack. Might compete with Selwood for 6-10 games this year??

Butler I know absolutely nothing about, McConnell sounds pretty good. I wonder if we'll end up using 58.

Seems as though Worsfold's midsized fetish is continuing

Butler is a player who swaps between the midfield and the forward line, but I'm not quite sure where he would end up at AFL level. I wasn't overly taken with his performances at the carnival, but he was very good against Vic Country, picking up a lot of touches.

He was disappointing against Vic Metro, made a couple of careless mistakes such as missing an easy shot on the run and getting caught right in front of the opposition goal. However, there are some very good traits about him - Butler is a beautiful set shot, a good pass by foot and rarely fumbles. He is one of those players that just looks like they know what they are doing.

Butler ended with 55 possessions for the carnival and was invited to draft camp. He is still very young (can play underage again next year). I'm not quite sure on his pace, can't recall him being slow or fast based on what I saw. Given his age and performances he must be worth a look late in the draft.

Daniel McConnell is a player who really impressed me this year and deserves to be drafted. His year was interrupted by the trip to Ireland with the AIS and two compound dislocations of the finger, but he was still very good.

I'm surprised he hasn't been mentioned a bit more as a player to watch. McConnell only scrapes into this draft by 9 days, yet is already 190cm and still has to fill out a bit. He is surprisingly quick and agile for his size - can play in a number of the key positions in both attack and defence. Daniel was in the top 10 for the 3km run and 4th in the shuttle run at draft camp.

In every game I saw him play he was always very busy for a big man, constantly gathering possessions and burning opponents off. He is a good worker in traffic, has clean hands will do team acts such as tackling and shepherding.

Use of the footy seems pretty good, and he is a good grab as well. Would think he is better suited to forward than defence, although he had an excellent game for Vic Metro against WA, mopping up everything in defence.

Can make mistakes such as not punching from behind, and can flash in and out, but given he is a year younger than most other draftees that doesn't concern me too much. Is capable of a very big day out, as 31 possessions and 6 goals against North Ballarat shows.

Given his age, size and endurance qualities I reckon he is worth as high as a 2nd round pick with a view to the future, but he might go a bit later.

- neither WA team took one WA draftee!

Does anybody know when the new guys will join preseason training? Would like to get along and get some snaps of them in action.

Personally I find that amazing... what happened to all the hype about how rich the WA talent pool was this year and how either team may look at going for purely local talent??

I'm thoroughly disappointed in not picking up a WA player, i really thought we had excellent WA talent here this year.
I'm happy with Waters and McConnell but not Butler????

anyway lookingg forward to Waters with number 24..

Good point! Will be interesting to see what numbers they get. I think we took Waters a tad early but he wouldn't have been there at #20. Took two defenders and a midfielder/forward. I just hope McConnell grows some more.

I tell ya... when I woke up this morning, I had a "feeling in me waters" that Beau was going to be in the purple next year.
Disappointed to now realise that I actually just needed to pee.:o

Good luck to WC with Waters, would've liked him at Freo.

Beau (first nickname suggestion: 'Repairs') looks pretty AFL ready in terms of his body size- certainly more so than Selwood was this year. Looks promising.

I think Butler looks a lot like Clark Kent on smallville..

See, after all this time, Dean will finally make it into our side :)

I think we did very well and I like the sound of the player descriptions as posted on this thread
