as the nab cup gets closer we are starting to get a real idea of what the team will look like im just interested in what everyone else thinks the team will look like mine is:

b:toovey,brown,maxi
chb:harry,reid,heater
mid:beams,pendles,sidey
chf:dids,dawes,daivs
ff:rusling,anthony,medhurst
rr:jolly,ball,swan
inter:wood,rounds,dale thomas,sharrod wellingham
subs:blair and lockyer

thoughts please post your team

Re: getting closer

definately add wellingham to that list probly in place of josh thomas?

Re: getting closer

I've got more of a feeling for Cook and McCarthy coming back into the side, especially for having Cook in as a tagger. Dale Thomas will probably ease back in to the side in Round 1, and Luke Rounds will probably be a sub (Lockyer would definitely be rested - looks like his wrist still isn't right).

 ....where's presti??? we cannot retire him yet, coming up against teams like lions, hawks especially because of the twin tower forward lines
but its definitely gonna be a season full of horses for courses etc..I have always been big on trying to make as little changes to the team once we find the right balance....but the way the game is evolving it does appear that (if we have limited injuries) the right balance changes depending on the opposition...so I have attempted to list best 22, keeping debut's in mind... I have come to the realisation that I can't do it...coz there is about 30 players I would have in my top 22 (mathematically not good):(

Re: getting closer

Well it's a NAB Cup line up, so Presti would be resting. Not a bad idea in my opinion, give Brown and Reid a chance, then bring Presti in for the season proper. I'd add Buckley though, he needs to play with the team and get used to the game plan as much as Jolly and Ball, might as well let him do it in the games that mean nothing.

Re: getting closer

Not sure we are any closer to knowing how the team will look just yet. We don't even know how the club intends on utilising this years NAB cup - to experiment or not. I'm hoping we use it as a spring board to the season proper and try and get all our systems in place and working - while resting players that need to be rested. I'm thinking something like this:

B: -------Toovey------Brown------O'Brien------
-----------------------Maxy-------------------
HB: ------Shaw--------Reid--------Buckley-----

C: -------Swan-------Pendles-----Wellingham---
Fol: ------Jolly---------Ball---------O'Bree------

HF: ------Didak--------Dawes-------Davis-------
FF: ------------Anthony-----Medhurst-----------

Int: Wood, Beams, Sidebottom, Thomas

No need to risk Cloke and Fraser this early in the piece with their injury issues. I'd add Medhurst and Thomas to this group too if they still have some issues when the NAB roles around (replaced by Macaffer and McCarthy).

We know what Presti and Lockyer will offer us and they know our system and gameplan so I think it is better they are rested. No need to burn the older players early.

O'Bree is the exception here as I think it is important he gets used to playing with Jolly and Ball so he needs the game time to build that playing chemistry.

Reid obviously gets a crack without Presti. Likewise Dawes with Cloke out. See what they can both offer.

With some of our forward line issues i'd love to see Dids, Davis and Medhurst up forward. I'm thinking this may be the best way for our forward line to go with these guys being very dangerous around the goals. Similar to how Geelong utilises Chapman, Johnson, Stokes, Varcoe etc. Very dangerous if we can get it right.

Would love to see Cloke in here using his size to contest and get the ball to ground in the 50 but I guess this responsibility falls to Dawes. Even if it is a failure I think we need to give him the opportunity.

I'd like to see Buckley played off the HBF assisting Shaw create rebound and also pushing into midfield. I think he could be very important to us this year breaking up the zone. If Davis is up forward someone needs to replace his midfield run and Buckley and Wellingham I think are both excellent options - i'd give them a crack.

Out of that 22 i'd also like to see Macaffer, McCarthy, Goldsack, Rusling and Blight all given opportunities as well.

Re: getting closer

It's hard to pick a 22 (or 24?) for NAB Cup first round, so I'll just go with some players I want to play, and some I don't want to see yet;

I want these players to play;

Ball; Needs to get used to our rotations, but only plays if he is 90-100% fit.
Jolly; Also needs to learn the midfield rotations, as he has to direct the ball to these players.
Blight; Everyone's been talking him up, he just has to play to show us how far he has come.
Sidebottom; Our next superstar, as tough as nails too, so he will play.
Reid; Put him at CHB, and give him some time on Riewoldt and Kosi.
N.Brown; Put him at FB, and switch with Reid.
S.Buckley; Has had a good pre season, and we need to see if he can stand up, no use "nursing" him through.
J.Thomas; Looks the most capable of our first year players, can't play too many young players, but I'd like to see what he can do.

I do not want to see these players (yet);

Cloke;
No need to risk him, put him in cotton wool till round 1.
Fraser; See Cloke
Prestigiacomo; Struggled late last year, and is 32 today, should be introduced later on, and gives Reid and Brown a chance to impress.
Corrie; Just don't want to see him.
Cook; See Corrie.
McCarthy; Need to nurse him a bit, maybe rotate him in and out with a MaCaffer or J.Thomas type.

I'd add Johnson and Lockyer to that second list too, but I believe they will play, they are both tough, and although "older" now, if fit they will probably play against the Aints.

Re: getting closer

If Josh can play... he must. He needs to get used to being our second choice ruckman and playing out of the goalsquare.

P.S:- Who's coaching the side?

There was an article about who was coaching who for each of the 4 rounds of the NAB Cup/Challenge, all I can remember is Gavin Brown is first and Buckley is second.

Watters is third, then Neeld for the final match.

Re: getting closer

Posted from an older thread.

Assuming Reid is ready, this is by FAR the best team we could field.

Backs: O'Brien N Brown Maxwell
Half Backs: Shaw Reid Buckley
Mids: Thomas Swan Didak
Half Forwards: Rusling Cloke Davis
Forwards: Medhurst Anthony Dick
Followers: Pendlebury Ball Jolly

Interchange: Beames, Wood, Goldsack, Wellingham
Emergencies: Presti, O'Bree, Sidebottom

Maybe take Dick out since he's injured and throw Stelle in there now.

I thought I would start a new thread in the absence of DTM, cause the other threads are going a bit stale now. It must be only 2 weeks until our first NAB cup game, so it must be time to consider our first line-up, based on training reports and injuries. I don't have time to go through my exclusions, other than to say that our priorities should be to trial new players and try other players in different positions. We are playing St Kilda.

Back: Maxwell Brown Wellingham
HB: Buckley Reid Macaffer
Centre: Didak Pendlebury Beams
HF: Medhurst Dawes Fraser
FF: Anthony Rusling Davis

Rucks: Jolly Ball Sidebottom

Inter: McCarthy H Shaw Wood Blight Goldsack Toovey O'Bree

Due to injury and age, I have left out Thomas, Cloke, Dick, Johnson, Lockyer.

Maxwell - Brown - Toovey
Wellingham - Reid - Buckley
Sidebottom - McCarthy - Beams
Didak - Dawes - Macaffer
Rusling - Anthony - Davis

Jolly - Ball - Pendles

Int: Blight, Blair, Goldsack, O'Bree (to see how him and ball go together), Wood, Rounds

We're playing St Kilda, who are no saints. I'd be tempted to leave out Rusling if we want him in one piece, plus Cloke, Fraser, Presti, Thomas, Lockyer, probably O'Bree, Medders and Ball.

We play them for 4 real H&A points only 3 or so rounds into the season. No use giving them an upclose preview now of new moves we are planning for then (try the moves out in subsequent NAB Challenge round matches).

So the main plus is to see how some youngsters are faring:

Toovey, NBrown, Maxwell
O'Brien, Reid, Shaw
Beams, Swan, Wellers
JMac, Dawes, Sidebottom
Macaffer, Anthony, Davis
Jolly, Pendles, Blair

Wood, Blight, Buckley, Goldsack, Barham, Keeffe

Bit light on in the extractor/sharking stakes with young JMac, Beams and Blair; perhaps O'Bree does need to be on the bench at least, just to keep the scores relatively respectable.

Maxwell - Brown - Toovey
Wellingham - Reid - Buckley
Sidebottom - McCarthy - Beams
Didak - Dawes - Macaffer
Rusling - Anthony - Davis

Jolly - Ball - Pendles

Int: Blight, Blair, Goldsack, O'Bree (to see how him and ball go together), Wood, Rounds

Have we all forgotten H Shaw

Maxwell - Brown - Toovey
Wellingham - Reid - Buckley
Sidebottom - McCarthy - Beams
Didak - Dawes - Macaffer
Rusling - Anthony - Davis

Jolly - Ball - Pendles

Int: Blight, Blair, Goldsack, O'Bree (to see how him and ball go together), Wood, Rounds

Decent team, I'd go in something like this as well. I'd be inclined to sit both Didak and Davis out though. I certainly think H and Heater are more likely to play than those two anyway.
Cook will definitely play, his skills are shit but this sort of game is his forté - plus he is working pretty hard and looking reasonable on the track at the moment. Couldn't think of any reason not to play him and give him big minutes on the pill.

Rusling out, Medhurst in. Barham will definitely play as well.

Funny thing is that Cookie's skills aren't shit and he can def. sink them. But just not under pressure - it's more of a decision-making thing than anything. At least that's fixable with more game-time, and NAB would be a good time to start losing that bad habit.

Why lose the 'Rus? Isn't NAB a good time to see where he's at? Medders could surely do with some slow but steady progress up to Rd 1 without the pounding at Docklands' shitty surface. Don't mind Action Jaxson playing, love to see him run AND kick.

Cookie kicks with a ****ing pitching wedge man, it definitely isn't just a decision making thing.

You're probably right about Rusling, I'm just inclined to baby him as much as possible at the moment

Another player who is likely to be selected in the squad is Corrie. They have kept him on the list (2 yr contract?) so he may as well be making up the numbers at this time of year just in case his game has undergone a metamorphosis over the break.

Medhurst should miss as mentioned. No one has mentioned Swan. You never know whether Mick is going to take these contests seriously. I like to see the young guys strut their stuff at this time of year.

Do you reckon that our American Hope might be given a taste of the big time during the comp? Leigh Brown will probably be thrown into the mix whether we like it or not.

I just really want to see Ried, Dawes, Buckley and McCarthy play. Especially Reid. If he can step it up and play to the same level in the AFL tat he does in the VFL he will be a big part of our improvement this year and years to come. I really think he has the potential to become a Nathan Bock type.

How many games of AFL do you think Shae would have played in his life?? Maybe one or two intraclub matches. Throwing him straight into an AFL level game would be suicidal. I say let him find his feet at a lower level where he doesn't have to deal with so much attention.

Does anyone actually know what's going on with this? I noticed last season that his late season form slump coincided with the addition of bandaging around the wrist, and I noticed that he still had thick bandaging around it in the last batch of training photos I saw. It's kind of important to our year that this issue is dealt with ASAP as it really hindered his ability to mark and tackle late last year, and both of these skills are pretty critical to his career given his role as a defensive half forward flanker considering he already lacks leg speed very very severely.
