Saints' halo begins to slip

As Champion Data's stats show, between rounds 5 and 7, the Blues have kicked 24 goals 8 from marks.

At an accuracy of 75%.

The Blues are the best converters from marks in the AFL.

Well done.

We have some upside with Waite out for three rounds and Henderson yet to hit his straps.

New Predictions:

Setanta - 50goals
Betts - 40 goals
Gartlett - 30 goals
Yarran - 30 goals
Waite - 25 goals
Murph - 25 goals

I got laughed at when I suggested that Setanta could kick 50 this year :)

I still reckon that Hendo could pop up with a min of 20 this year if things work out for him.

Good to see the 2 youngsters from Swan Districts, Yarran & Betts getting amongst it. Although I'm a Claremont man in the WAFL I often wander down down the road to Bassendean as it's one of my favourite suburban grounds, beautiful old venue for watching footy so I'm quite fond of the Black & Whites (WAFL only of course).
Of course everyone knew Yarran could play but Garlett has been the real surprise packet. He was terrific last night. I loved that piece of play where Yarran motored down the wing and delivered in front of Garlett who turned and snapped from the square. Really good footy to watch.
Very impressive win from The Blues.

I loved the bit where Garlett motored down the wing and side footed it to Waite on the lead...

So what have we learned so far this year post Fev?

*We've had quite a few less goalkickers so far this season for whatever reason, yet we've had more players pop up kicking bags of 2-3-4 goals most weeks.
* Last year we had 3 players with 10+ goals at this point, this year we have 4 (and Murph on the brink with 9). Waite & Garlett have both only played 4 games so you'd imagine they'd have kicked more also.

*Our attack is only 5 goals worse off at this point in time, whereas our defence is 9 goals stronger (and that includes the smashing we got from Collingwood!)
* On the whole we've had a harder run compared with last year and we're a win up.

DISCUSS.

I'm happy in the direction we are moving as a team. Last year i had nowhere near the confidence in our back 6 than i have now. Our small defenders are the key to this i believe. Russell, Armfield & AJ have been magnificent so far this year. Negating and running!. Jamo has been as dependable as ever, and White is doing a few nice things with his run, gets beatena bit 1 on 1 and often looks paniced but he will learn. We have been relatively stingy at the back as well, and take the Collingwood aberration out (which in theory stemmed from the midfield anyway) and our back 6 is 15+ goals stronger than last year at the same point.

Up forward we are alot less predictable and its working for us. Setanta is stepping up big time and the smalls are thriving with him getting the ball to feet. The big thing i've noticed in our forwardline is movement. Both talls and smalls are offering leads, dropping into space and working as a unit, something we very rarely saw with Fev. The one thing we do miss is the go to guy when we really need one but it remains to be seen if we actually need that, as handy it was knowing that we had Fev at our disposal.

On the whole we're better placed this year, we're playing some good footy, and best of all we've beaten some top sides. Yes, we will have our down days, we still have young players, but i can't see why we can't get on a real run over the next month and be sitting nicely on the ladder come mid season and onwards.

Some very good stuff there Sub and I think that you have produced something that the "Ohh noes we're screwed with no Fev" brigade should be paying attention to.

We are a win up with a brand new forward line structure that is settling a lot faster than I thought it would. I have gone on record saying that the forward line wouldnt settle until round 11 or 12 and then we will come storming back but I think that the guys who are there are stepping up to the challange and taking it on and are kicking some serious arse out there.

We are 5 goals down on last year with Fev... big deal... we have an unpredictable forward line and the opposition is having to try and go one on one with the small guys while trying to double team Setanta. And he is going to be more of a handful than Fev was... not because he would put guys in hospital if they propped in front of him... but because he is so athletic and balanced if the ball hits the deck and they lose their feet, he is gone. And he brings the other forwards into the play with his "team" work.

And with the opposition trying to go one on one with the smalls... most teams dont have small pacy defenders who can go with our guys. The two best examples on Monday night was Yarran casually loping away from his nearest opponent and Garlett putting the pedal to the metal and burning off one of the Aints players and having 2 bounces while he was at it before hitting Waite on the tit for Waite's 4th.

The only defence that could possibly man up on our small forwards and make them ineffective is our own.

The biggest upside is that we have a forward line with a lot of x-factor now when before with Fev, as has been noted before, we were very flat and he was providing our x-factor with small cameos from the others.

Whats changed... now instead of looking to go long to Fev every time, we are now looking for the best option available and if it happens to be Setanta, then the ball is going to be locked into our forward line because he will ensure it... and he will also try and get the ball to one of the small forwards if he doesnt mark it cleanly.

What was even more impressive with the win against the Saints is that we did it without our new gun CHF in Henderson. So there is even an upside to that in that we still have him to come back into the squad.

Top work. Harder opponents, better defence at any earlier stage.

Round 8 update:

Setanta O'hAilpin: 21 goals 8 games (8th in AFL)

Eddie Betts: 16 goals 8 games

Chris Yarran: 14 goals 8 games

Jeff Garlett: 12 goals 5 games

Ryan Houlihan: 10 goals 8 games

Jarrad Waite: 9 goals 5 games

Marc Murphy: 9 goals 8 games

And it is quite possible that all those above players will kick 20+ this year.

Setanta 40+
Eddie and Waite 30+
With the rest 20+

And I would not be surprised to see Kreuzer, Judd, Simpson and Henderson pushing close to 20+ as well.
