Does anyone else think we need more natural goalkickers in our forward line?
Of Dawes, Cloke, Sinclair, Fasolo, Goldsack and Elliot, the only guy who looks a natural goakicker is Fasolo. We need players who can create something down there, not just cause pressure and pick up the easy goals. I know losing Krakouer was a hit in this area, particularly with Leon Davis and Paul Mehurst leaving over the past couple of years. I think one of our major problems this year is having dangerous players up forward. I even think MaCaffer is a much more creative and clever forward than Goldsack, who I see as being good with pressure, but lacking the forward instincts.

If we are not succesful at the end of this season, I think we need to bring in some VFL, SANFL, WAFL level natural goalkickers on rookie contracts. With a midfield of Swan, Pendles, Daisy, Ball, Sidebottom, Beams, Wellingham and Blair we will win enough ball, we just need players who can make use of the f50 entries.

I'd add Daisy to that list of natural goal kickers. I wouldn't be surprised if he played more minutes in the forward line if our inside 50 goal kicking options dry up.

Elliot is a natural goalkicker. Showed it in the vfl but hasnt quite yet in the AFL. It will come, his gold coast game was more indicative of his goal kicking abilities. He just needs to stop over-running the ball when he goes to take possession on the ground, he is probably still struggling a bit with the speed of the game but that is to be expected. I expect him to break out this week and show us what we can look forward to for the rest of his career

Beamer still has his fair share of forward time, may not sit there often but more-so he pushes into the 50 as the ball moves because he's so deadly. He is as natural a goal kicker as anyone in the league.

Hadn't thought of that, but come to think of it not a bad comparison. Beams is a more prolific ball-winner and doing it at a much earlier age, too.

Very good OP and agree 100%. with our midfield we are (and should be) winning enough I50s but we can't convert them into scores. I think we really missed Sinclair on Saturday. Maybe Daisy spends a bit of time down there, when we have Swan, Pendles, Beams, Sidebottom, Blair (and next week Wellers) in the midfield. Hopefully Didak gives us that real x-factor when he comes back.

Good point actually. I want to see Thomas forward a bit more, and maybe Blair - both have a great goal sense. Sidebottom seems a smart player around the goals as well, as does Beams, but we can't have them all playing forward.

I actually don't think Thomas is suited to a permanent role in the forward line, as he is one of our midfielders who can break the line and run with the footy. I think we need him in the midfield. Rotating Swan, Pendles and Daisy in the forward pocket would be a great idea though.

True. All 3 have different strengths which make them very hard to match up on. Swan is really strong in 1-on-1's, Daisy seems a good lead up and crumbing forward and Pendles is just an out and out gun

I think its clear to see that our forward structures are currently not working. We have employed the same tactics that almost cost us the 2010 premiership against the saints. We are just sitting the ball on top of Clokes head and expecting him to do all the work. We are playing into the hands of opposition clubs who throw a third man up.

We are not using cloke to the best of his ability, he has proven to be most effective when he is using his superior work rate to burn off his opponents with searching leads up to the wing. (Some have said that they think cloke is could be carrying an injury, but I dont think this is ture as against the hawks he still covered 15kms and leads the league in contest marks.) This has the flow on effect of creating space in our forward for Dawes to work one out or maybe even tarrant out of the square.

We are just a little slow in moving the ball into the forward 50, this is giving opposition midfielders a chance to get back and be at the fall of the ball and then run the ball out of our forward 50. There was one play from us on saturday against the hawks which was prefect, it was late in the game and the ball came from the the back of the square (cant remember who kicked it, maybe fas or beams) and then the player hit Jolly 35-45 out and he goaled. This is where we need to get to rather then trying to pin point a pass in conjestion from 60 out.

I really like the idea of FAIRAND BALANCED and Mateyman having one of Swan, pendles or daisy resting in the forward pocket, this has worked to great effect already this year with Swan against Melbourne and Brisbane and Pendles against the crows. All three are very smart footballers and would expect them to outsmart most defenders. All three are also strong over head.

Unfortunately if we cant sort this out we are in big touble and run the risk of being the next essendon of 2000, great team for 3 years with ounly 1 flag.

We have two perfectly good key position forward at the moment.
One is down on form and confidence due to an ongoing contract dispute.
(that has been put on hold till the end of the season)
The other is down on form and confidence due to being asked to play a in a completely role than the one he is accustomed.

Interesting observation. When you look at it like that, it really is unusual to have 6 forwards, 4 of whom are poor set kicks at goal. I'd also add Beams & Thomas as poor set shots. Really the only time i feel confident is when Jolly lines up.

Don't know about set shots, but Beams has probably been our best finisher this year

Yeah, Daisy, Swan, Beams all great on the run but seem to freeze up with the set shot.

Id say your right besides Beams the last few years he was a bit iffy but this year I see him as one of our best set shots on goal.

I think the OP has it right- in 2010 we had Macaffer (who is a natural forward), Davis and Medhurst on the books.. we had depth and options within our forward 50.

Krakouer was brought in to play the crumbing role- but along with the aforementioned trio, he hasn't played a minute in 2012.

Combine this with a loss in form for Cloke and Dawes (and the retirement of Leigh Brown), and our forward line looks suspect. It's the perfect storm of injuries, retirements and form loss- we're going to have to be creative for the time being. Daisy up forward would be a good start but as several have noted, he doesn't look right at the moment. If we move Tarrant, Swan or Beams forward, we may be robbing Peter to pay Paul..

Very interesting thread FNB.

I feel we just arent getting the ball inside 50 often or effectively enough compared to the previous 2 years. I believe this is a contributing factor in Cloke's seemingly disappointing season - our inside 50 count has only been 53 per game as compared to 61 in 2011 and 57 in 2010.

The loss as mentioned of Krak/Leroy and last year Bally has affected our goal kicking ability. Blair's move into the midfield has also meant he is down on last season also. The loss of Ball has really impacted on the inside 50 opportunities and less experienced players filling their roles.
Goldsack has filled the breech a little but needs more help - Sinclair has grown in confidence as the year wore on.

Dawes has had a major role change - and i feel he is just now starting to show glimpses - but we would all acknowledge that he needs to regain his efficiency around goals.

We need our backline to start clicking again as this is where much of our source of goals gained by turnovers and deft movement often resulted in inside 50 opportunties.
