Daniel Jackson showed some real grunt last year and a liking for the rough stuff. What other players on our list does anyone think have the attitude or the mongrel to be enforcers for our team . To go in hard and be a real hitman

I think McGuane and Connors have shown a heap of fierceness and determination in their limited game time.

In only his second game, Connors stood up to Barry Hall...which, in itself, shows that he's not going to take a backward step

Keep it up boys, hopefully all the other youngsters will follow suit :thumbsu:

This comment I am going to write is pointless it doesnt even matter and I'm most likely wrong but wasnt it his first game he stood up to Barry?
Shane Edwards definately has some grunt though haha.

I agree with JON. i think he'll eventually furnish into a fierce competitor. I know that sounds perposterous now but im talkin in 2-3 years time when he fills out to his max playing weight and fitness.

Newman is hardy but IMO just hasnt got that psycho look in his eye. He makes up for it enough in other areas anyhow.

Jacko definately has abit of grunt so has Connors.

Kingy is the terrier of the list. He's our libba but faster.

Meyer is a quiet determined type player. Not a bad bwoy bone in him but once again his skills are what he will hurt teams with.

Cogs isnt a bad bwoy either, he's just excetionally good in close quarters.

I like Polo but like Newmo and Meyer, his skills are where his agression is.

Tuck is a meanie and wont take a back seat.

So our griunt players IMO and in order are :

King
Tuck
Jacko
Connors

Tigertroy can't start threads and he asked me to start one for him
Thanks Mad Tiger and appreciated as well. Its not that silly a post. All premiership teams have some resident meat axes eg. Essendon 2000 ( the Johnson's and Soloman) Bears 2001 -2003 Martin Pike and the Scott Boys

I believe all teams need those players that come in from no where to look after team mates that have been knocked around off the ball.

Along with Jackson I think Raines has the ability and courage to become a real enforcer. I'd like to see Jackson , Raines and MaGuane plus Petifer with his war face make a few opposition players have a look and not concentrate on the ball.

Simmonds and Pattison have the ability as well I feel and Connors is pretty in your face

you know, you're probably right mate!

makes it sound ever better too doesn't it

Jacko
King
Newman
Polo
Tuck
Coughlan
Foley
Connors

They all have grunt and hardness to them

THEREIN lies the problem at Tigerland - one which has been apparent for decades.
No questioning some or all of the above show "grunt", but do they have a presence.
Goldy is not a tall man, but I'd tower over most of this lot.
Why is it that most of our hard nuts are always our smallest players?
From Flea Weightman in the late 80s-early 90s to Kingy and Foley in the present day.
We won't likely go anywhere of note until we develop some taller and bulkier players with the same hardness, in the Jonathon Brown or Glenn Archer mould.
When your smallest players are your hard nuts, your team is in trouble ladies and gentlemen!

As for JON.........whatever you're on, send me a truckload of the stuff. About as hard as wafer!!! With awafer-thin physique to match.

Interesting topic given GM's comment that we have a few 'Archer' types...and I am not sure who he means! Perhaps he was refering to the new recruits in Rance and Gourdis?? (They strike me more as solid kids than intimidating in their style of play.)

Apart from them, I can only think of Jacko that is intimidating on our list. The other 'rough and tumble' players go in hard but are to small to really intimidate... have I missed something?

When Port Adelaide were at the best the 2 scariest players on their list were Damien Hardwick and Josh Carr. You're kidding yourself if you think the key to premierships or going anywhere notable is recruiting big angry blokes who not only need skill but need to be suited to what our game has become. These dudes are rare in the modern game, and as handy as they could be, success can be had without them if you've got enough midsized hardnuts in the mould of say Jackson, Polo and Connors:D.

King is our only player who goes out of his way to get in people's faces at this stage, though I suspect Jackson will become one and Connors may eventually.

Aside from that we have quite a few blokes who are just hard at the ball and won't take a backwards step. There's nothing wrong with that these days, it's easy to go too far and get a holiday from the tribunal trying to do more than that. The only real physical intimidation you can apply these days is the type Tuck and Pattison do every week...'if you're between me and the ball I'll run straight over the top of you without even noticing.'

That gets the message across far better than having a jumper cuddle bluff session.

Most of the players on my list are 6'2" or 6'1"

Jacko
Newman
Polo
Tuck
Coughlan
Connors

None of these guys are small

Connors

I think this bloke has a lot of #rick in him, I watched him run off the bench in his first game and run straight up to Barry Hall and give him a fair shove. His first was meant to be the week or 2 prior but he was reported and suspended in the Ressies. I think he'll be pretty handy when he fills out a bit, a bit like a Barry Young type.
