I truly believe that Carlton's fortunes rest with their more experienced players.I believe that our lot would be greatly improved if the following play at their potential. Koutoufides, Stevens, Lappin, Whitnall, Fevola, Houlihan and Waite.

From the first 2 rounds the player who most concerns me is Stevens. In round one he got plently of possessions but didn't in my opinion play any better than he did in round2. I just don't feel he has the mental toughness to be a consisitently inspiring player like Voss or Buckley. To me he has aspects of Campo about him and the way he is going will get to late 20's with a similar end to Scott.

He seems to play like a victim when things are tough. He has incredible ability and when on song can do all the hard things and uses his skills to their best. However when chips are down his chasing, tackiling and general demenour is very poor. In these moods his attack on the ball is also poor and his disposal less than instictive.

Scotland like Nick and Campo also has amazing natural ability but suffers from similar attitude cycles. In round one he was awaesome with all facets including his attack on the ball and the man when he didnt have the ball. In round 2 he just went missing again, something that was frequent last year. If he was consistent he would be one of our leaders.

Our leadership group has the ability to be as good as most in the AFL. What I question is if they have the mental toughness to go with their ability. If they haven't can it be instilled into them. From the first 2 rounds it already appears like Houlihan and Fevola have the capacity to be mentally tough. If Nick and even Heath can lift to a consistent level of mental toughness then perhaps Carlton could be highly compeditive this year.

If our leaders chase and tackle and man up with passion...if they attack the ball with confidence and continually hold their heads high then I believe our younger players and lesser lights will lift to their potential. Spirit is infectous. Campos spirit was a cancer at the end whilst Fev's at the moment is a massive cure.

I think that's a pretty honest assessment of where Stevens and Scotland are at atm. Although, I believe with a bit more midfield support they will get better. IMO, I thought Stevens had a great game in round one, and a not so good one against Fremantle.

As for Scotland, he frustrates me more than just about anyone at Carlton. He has awesome skills and when on song, his delivery is just sensational. His problem is his consistency, or lack of it.

Don't be too hard on these two boys, as i'm sure (hopefully) they will be able to step up sooner rather than later.

excellent post. both boys were ordinary on saturday and displayed very little leadership. that's the second time that crowley has done the job on stevo and it's the second time he has shown very little resistance.

Stevo's been pretty rusty so far. In fact if he doesn't watch himself he could turn into a Camporele!

Scotland I still have no faith in. He gets plenty of the ball but kicks daisy cutters and provides lotsa junk stats. He had the ability to really influence games when he first started with us, but hasn't quite regained that touch. And I don't regard Houla a 'senior' player. It's common knowledge he's playing for his career this year, he's basically the new Furphy Murphy. He really needs to step up on Saturday.

It's imperative that Larnce, Kouta and Stevo play good games this weekend if we're gonna win, the supply to Fev needs to be constant.

Good post pumped. :thumbsu:

I think that Stevens will step up after getting done by Crowley once again. He's usually pretty consitent IMO, and his skills are valuable although he has a problem with his finishing. Scotland gets a lot of the ball and plays very well sometimes but usually frustrates a lot with poor disposal. Both will have to play a part if we can upset the swans.

Agree totally with your comments on Stevo and Scotland but give it a few more rounds and you can add Houla to that group as well, he always starts the season well and then tails off has for the last 4 years anyway. There is no way we can make Stevo Captain when Kouta goes he drifts out of games far to often to be captain IMO the most consistent and inspirational player over the past 2 seasons has been Lance and he should be the next Captain of Carlton, he always tries his guts out and never drops his head and with the fitness he has this year he will have a big one, can lift his performance and the teams when needed and that is what you need in a leader inspirational acts when down. It was the new Mosquito fleet that lifted in the second half on Saturday and what a fleet they wiil become Bentick, Simpson, Betts, Murphy, Carazzo and to come Blackwell will carry the team for the next ten years although we really need to get a couple of bigger bodied midfielders in the next draft unless Walker and Russell can go into the middle later on, problem is our Father/Sons over the next couple of years are more Mosquito fleeters whether we can carry that many small players is a question that needs to be asked before the next draft.

Go the Mossies:thumbsu:

Crowley has owned Stevens in the last 2 games now.

2 games for Crowley he has kicked 6 goals in total and had nearly 50 possessions. Stevens has had 27 possessions in total and 0 goals in comparision.

Crowley had him only for the first half really but the damage was done. Tagging him out of it and pushing forward and taking advantage of his lack of accountability to kick goals.

Definitely a problem their, and certainly something that other clubs can exploit when playing Carlton. Something for the "brains trust" at Carlton to think about.

Stevens really picked up his game in the second half. And the whole team aws beaten in the first.

Scotland was a disgrace.......something was up.

I think there was a strange spirit in the boys, like they know this was a lost cause. Lappin, Scotland, Stevens looked like rabbits in the headlights, like they were scared, it really was wierd.

Simmo is now one our most important players, and walker has delivered on all the hype. This guy was unbelievable. I might have been looking for him, but wow. He looks soooo good.

We need some one else in the forward line. Kennedy needs to be lifted early. Sorry Denis but its time and we have little choice. (Either taht or Bryan, but Deluca is OUT).
