I was looking over our list and its great to see we finally have some real depth there. A few years ago I struggled to put a best 22 on paper because we didn't have 22 that were good enough. Now i struggle because there are so many capable players to choose from.
Some of the players that are going to miss out this year would be walk up starts at some of the other clubs. The future is looking really bloody good!

dude, our list finally has some class more like it. Triers will find it hard to get a game nowadays, whereas they were the first picked before, because they trained hard etc etc. ;)

the competition for spots is going to push a lot of them a lot harder this year i think.

i'd say in the midfield lids, tuck, cotchin, johnson, cousins, foley and tambling would probably be pretty much locked in, but every other spot would be pretty much up for grabs.

that 'other' midfield slot that polo, jackson, thomson, etc might be battling for is going to keep everybody honest i think.

i think that's why geelong have been so successful, players like prismall could hardly get a game.

add Cogga to that too dude. Reckon if he is on the job, re. fitness etc, A-team midflied when TW wants the scoreboard to tick over for us, will be - cousins, foley, cogga, polo, cotchin.
With the others doing the rotations when we are in a holding pattern and if the team we are playing are as good as we have been over the last 10 years, then even then we might even see the scoreboard ticking over. This is how top sides, smash you when you have shit second tier, and a so-so top tier and how top sides tend to mix with other top sides when you have a top tier of class and a second tier that can hold its own. ;)

I think Johnsons days in the midfield are just about over especially with the addition of Cousins. Add Edwards, White, Connors, Coughlin and Raines to that midfield mix and there is gonna be plenty of competition!

Here's a draft of our ones and 2's. Some pretty handy players in the twos. I agree that Johnson's days are numbered.

FB Newman Thursfield McGuane
HB Raines Moore McMahon
C Deledio Tuck Richo
HF Brown Jack Riewoldt Cotchin
FF Morton Hughes White
Followers Simmonds Foley Cousins
Int: Pattison Bowden Johnson Tambling

FB Rance Silvester King
HB JON Shulz Hislop
C Connors Thomson Jackson
HF Edwards Post Pettifer
FF Nahas Vickery Gourdis
Followers Graham Coghlan Polo
Int: Gilligan Putt Collins
Emergencies Polak Andrew Browne

good job. agree on johnson. really hope this would be his last year. nothing against the ex-skipper, he's been a solid contributor, but i now have plenty of faith in our midfield depth it would almost be cruel not to play connors, edwards, cogs thomson, hislop, polo etc in the senior team.

Just to put essentially the same info in a slightly different format (that I think makes hit even more obvious how good our depth has become):

FB: Newman/Bowden/King, Thursfield/Silvester, McGuane/Rance
HB: Raines/Hislop, Moore/Schulz/Polak, McMahon/JON
C: Deledio/Jackson/Collins, Tuck/Coughlan, Richardson/Tambling
HF: Brown/Pettifer, Riewoldt/Post, Cotchin/Edwards/Nahas
FF: White/Connors/Gilligan, Hughes/Vickery/Putt, Morton/Gourdis
R: Simmonds/Pattison/Graham/Browne, Foley/Polo/Thomson, Cousins/Johnson

Looking at that, I think it's easy to see where we have some depth issues but on the whole it looks pretty impressive.
