ok there has been a bit of discussion about where our list is at and if we are a genuine finals threat so i thought we could have a closer look at all the players.
1) Mark Johnson - form has been a bit up and down in recent years.Isnt getting any quicker and gets exposed for pace when he spends too much time in the midfield. Still a dangerous small forward who can kick multiple goals and is still a good defender.Where is his place in the team? I see him as a bench player / spare parts man now. Able to come on the ground and be a dangerous forward and used in defence if needed. Can be used in the midfield in short burst's but only when we have a few of the quicker midfielders on the ground.
2) Ricky Dyson - Big year coming up for Rick. Hasnt been consistant so far but doesnt always get a lot of game time. There have been many complaints about the game time he gets but he has had minor injuries in the past that have lingered on and havnt helped his fitness which in turn results in less game time. At his best he is reasonably quick and has good skills but he tends to go missing a lot and recently his disposal by foot has been a bit average at times.Needs to lift his game to a level where he is getting the footy 15 to 20 times a game.He has had a bit of an interupted pre season this year but it hasnt been as bad as previous years and is currently training well. If he doesnt lift this year he may well be under pressure to keep his spot on the list next year.
3) Scott Gumbleton - has had a bit of a slow start but he is improving on the track and in the trial games. Dont expect to see a lot of him in the seniors this year but he does look to have the tools to make it when he puts a bit of size on.
4)Jobe Watson - has come back looking fitter again this year. His kicking can let him down under pressure at times but he is on track to be a solid midfielder for us over a number of years.Reads the game pretty well most of the time which covers for his lack pace.
5) James Hird - Hird is Hird. Not as good as he was but is still a star.
6)Angus Monfires - Has built up a little on last year but is still small. Works harder than anyone at the club on his skills and looks ready to move into the midfield a bit more this season. Will be a great player for us over a number of years.Expect him to be even better this year.
7)Leroy Jetta - Not ready for the midfield yet as his fitness isnt as advanced as a few others on our list but he has shown how skillfull he is around goal in a few of the trial games. May play some footy this year but probably not a lot yet.
8) Jason Winderlich - another who is at the stage where it is now or never. Has been given plenty of time to overcome a number of injuries and off field problems and needs to deliver. Showed some good form last year before his leg injury and has been pretty consistant in all the trail games this year. Disposal can be a bit dodgey at times but he runs hard and when his confidence is up he gets involved. Wont ever be a super star midfielder but can be more than handy.
9) Adam Ramanauskas - Dont think we will see a lot of Rama this year, in fact i dont expect to see him at all at senior level. If all goes well hopefully he plays some good footy with benigo in the last half of the year and we get to see the old Rama back in 2008.
10) Mark McVeigh - Gives away too many frees but other than that he is our best small defender. Is also a dangerous forward when used in that role. For whatever resaon he has never really taken to the midfield other than to play defencive roles but is still one of our better players.
11) Damien Peverill - I think it is pretty much the end of the road for Pev. Tries hard and is a great clubman for us but he is too slow and his kicking can be poor. He can certainly get the footy but he doesnt hurt the opposition enough .
12)Andrew Welsh - Interesting player. Seems to be you either love him or hate him. Gets a lot of the ball coming out of defence which leads to people getting annoyed with him as he tends to go in cicles at times when there are no options up field or he doesnt see someone in the clear. Can sometimes hanball to teamates under pressure which never looks good. He is a very good kick of the footy up to 35 or so meters but some of his longer kicks can lack penertration and accuracy. I like him as a player but my main critisism of him is he can miss longer options up field a lot. Seems to go short too much at times.
13) Andrew Lovett - wasnt as spectacular last year but over the season he was more consistant. Looked to have lost his way a little for a while last year but this pre season has been excellent. I think he will have a very good year this year playing a lot more in the midfield.
14) Jason Johnson - has had an interupted pre season with another foot injury but he hasnt lost as much fitness as he did last year. May miss the first couple of weeks but at his best he is in our number 1 midfield rotation.
