Interesting that for their home jumper they have gone with a simple 'traditional' style footy jumper - relatively simple logo of proportionate size and well positioned, symmetrical, uncluttered, clean lines without rendering (except a little bit of unnecessary stuff within the logo). It might seem a bit plain, but will look good on the field.

Beats the hell out of our cluttered monstrosity.

Anyone else already thinking ahead to Round #1 2011? Specifically wondering who the AFL will put them up against in their first game in their history @ AFL level?

Wouldn't think they'd put them up against a Geelong or a St Kilda.

Would probably err on the side of giving them a "chance" to win their first ever game.

Also I'm thinking a Suns vs Lions game would be a bit of a blockbuster for the AFL and ensure the rivalry gets off to a good start with a big crowd for game #1 of the rivalry.

What does everyone else think?

not really sure but you would think that the first half of the year they would be playing up here given their stadium won't be ready until mid 2011.

Easter thursday was a trade off for not having games at the gabba from memory, happy to be corrected though.

They will be until Carrara is ready. After that I thought they had a small number of games at the Gabba each year (3?) but I'm not 100% on that.

They will be wearing their white jumper when they play away to us (it says so on the AFL website), which in turn must mean we will have to wear the White Jumper of Surrender when we play 'away' (at the GABBA) to them.

While their jumpers actually look pinkish-red in real life, everyone knows that jumper colours can change subtly over the years.

What p*sses me off no end, is that Our Club allowed Gold Coast to have almost the same colours as ours. Red, Blue and Gold vs. Maroon (and Red in Victoria), Blue and Gold.

What do we do in response? Defend our brand, our heritage, our colours. No, we change our logo and jumpers (adding a lot more blue), in a complete and utter act of surrender and stupidity.

Why didn't / haven't the Brisbane Lions administration made extremely vigorous attempts to stop the dilution of the Lions brand by ensuring that Gold Coast did not take up our team colours???????????

Yeah, they were always going to take up gold, but red and blue as well? Brisbane people with not much of a background to footy may say red is not one of our colours, but anyone who knows about the history of our Club would know red has been a Fitzroy colour for a long time now (since 1975). And this of course is the reason Brisbane wear red in Melbourne (or are meant to).

Add to that that red and maroon are very similar colours, and it is just ridiculous that our Club didn't make a heap more out of this. Instead we put up the white flag of surrender and change our own jumpers without consulting the members. I am sure the adding of more blue to our jumpers as well as the cursed Paddle Pop lion was directly linked to Gold Coast coming into the competition.

Take a look at how Collingwood reacted to Port coming into the competition and how they continue to act to try to stop them wearing Black and White or mentioning the magpies. Yeah Eddie can be an over the top d$ck about it, but they have been overwhelmingly successful in protecting their Club's core image from erosion.

Perhaps Fitzroy should have made more of it when Adelaide came into the comp in 1991, but given their jumpers are so different, and that Fitzroy was administratively so weak at the time, as well as the fact that the colours reflect historical South Australian footy colours, maybe it is more understandable.

I have had these thoughts for a long time, but a little blurb in the paper today made me think of it again. Apparently Gold Coast are going to unveil their mascot and actual jumpers later this month. If they are largely red, instead of largely Gold then I will spew.

Said in the Courier Mail today that it's going to be a Lions v Suns game in Round 1, but I'm not sure of the source.

Lions v Suns round 1 is all speculation, it is just very likely. Where else would you play a new team but at home, and how else would they play besides the cross town rival to make sure you get a crowd. Pretty sure going back to the deal with stadiums QLD (or whoever they are) games of Lions v Suns will be at the Gabba, whether it's home or away for the suns. All the bigger games for the suns will be played at the Gabba.

It will be very important for us to give them a licking come round 1 next year. Im sure they will be out to prove something, especially against us. A loss for them wouldn't be as bad as a loss for us in the first game.

I understand the naive Brisbane viewpoint and the lack of any concern shown by the Club and its members. Doesn't mean I have to like it though.

I read all of your post prior to posting. None of it indicated why they would be consulting with the Lions regarding colours.

Still none of this post indicates it either. You point towards one of only two clubs (Essendon being the other) that has shit fests every time they don't get their way, be it jumper (clash or otherwise), draw or MRP. Sure, that might be an option for the club but there's a reason Collingwood has bugger all respect from the rest of the comp on matters like this.

You obviously know little about football history.

The reason the Port Adelaide Magpies are today wearing mostly black along with teal and a bit of white and are called the Power is solely as a result of the lobbying of Collingwood.

Of course Club's can influence the AFL. The AFL Commission is there as a representation of the 16 Clubs. The fact that Brisbane basically never stands up for itself is an indication of the weakness of the Club.

Give me an Essendon or a Collingwood any day that will fight for their own heritage over absolute corporate co@ks@ckers that cave in at the first opportunity and more than that - DO IN THEIR OWN MEMBERS IN THE PROCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
