Our midfield future

"Most posters" ??? Bullshit!!

"He will become an important part of the midfield rotation"???:eek::eek::eek:

Seriously, what ****ing drugs are you on???

Palmer is now, has been, and will always be (for as long as he plays for us) one of the top three or four mids at our club.

He won the rising star. As a midfielder. He is now, and will be for any team he plays for in the next ten years, a midfield key.

"He will become an important part of the midfield rotation"????? Seriously??? WTF???? HE WON THE RISING STAR YOU ASSGARDIAN!! HE IS ONE OF OUR TOP THREE MIDS!! FFS!! Stop knifing our midfield core, that is what we expect from Mammories and GeorgeGrill.

You are just on hallucinogenics!! Smoke some more weed dude, and by your logic Gough will be back as PM just next week, with the Ruddster as deputy...

What a ****ing load of crap. You are truly a sad sack.

To say I think your post is a little over the top is an understatement. Just look at the two posts immediately above yours that illustrate my point perfectly.

I have noticed a definite trend on BF of posters dismissing Palmer as a key cog in the future due to the GWS speculation combined with his average form over the last year (whether or not he's still recovering from his injury is irrelevant, people only care about output not the reasons behind it)

And I also don't see how him winning the Rising Star in 08 somehow means he's currently one of our most important midfielders.

Seriously tone that shit down, I'm agreeing with you that Palmer is important FFS.

Suban needs to show me a lot more before I would be including him in any elite midfield talk. Looking more like a long kicking flanker who can run in the midfield for short spells at the moment - at a cross roads for me.

We need Barlow to come back to at least 85- 90% of what he was.

Sandi - Barlow, Mundy, Morra, Fyfe, Hill & Ibbotson is our A Grade and it damaging as it provides a variety which is very hard to match up on and Morra aside all are almost what I would term elite users of the ball.

Barlow makes the most of Sandi's dominance and is just such a beautiful user of the ball and as smart a player as I can recall pulling on a Freo jumper.

Morra is a battering ram, his tackles stick and his big body tires opposition players ...he may not be elite but he can kick em from outside 50 (praying he comes back fit but he is young so I am hopeful)

Mundy is silky in his ball use and it will help him to have been without Barlow for a good portion of the season.

Hill's pace and skills are first class, I think he is one who will find himself sweeping ...I am hoping Duffield re-finds past glory.

Fyfe is a hard running aerialist, lovely kick, and Ibbo if he can keep that on switch flicked is a valuable piece of the puzzle.

Pav must push back to the forward line to extend his career.

There I draw the line, I am hopeful that Pitt (skills and footy smarts will break down zones) and Crichton (smart and a tackling workhorse). Really need Clarke pushing through ....I pray he will earn a crack in the 2nd half of the season.

Bollenhagen is a ?, Hinkley and Schammer would appear to be excessive to our needs

Suban needs to do more and do it consistently.

Suban played some incredible games last year despite having an average year due to a couple injuries. Great skills, Great Vision, Great Leadership, good inside, is tough and some of his link plays are great and I am extremely confident that he has the potential to turn in to a similar player to Luke Hodge.

I think some of you need to have a closer look at Suban. The guy is a gem. He is slowly getting better and better. On the weekend he was in the top 5 for us in posessions (24). It is not the number of posessions he has but his penetrating accurate long left kicks that hit targets beyond 50 metres( very heath black like). You guys need to put on your glasses. The other really good atrribute he has is his vice like tackling, the guy is a LEADER. Mark my words that this guy will start to kick them big goals from a long way out on the run.

I have to laugh at the inclusion of Mora and Ibbo in our "A grade" midfielders. That's laughable, both have shown some glimpses but haven't strung a stretch together yet. Ibbo has been around a lot longer and shown pretty much no consistency in that role, his 2010 performances are worse than what Palmer is dishing up now. He would be pushing out players like Pitt, Roberton, Suban when required I believe.

As to Suban, he is disappointing. He can kick long and quick, but decision making often isn't the best and his pace is below Palmers. Look at someone like Broughton who came on exactly like Suban should have. He is a gem Redgum, and he's young and good looking.

Has leadership ability undoubtedly.

He is currently inconsistent IMHO and (as it should be in a good team) he is one who will come under pressure when a fit Ibbotson and Barlow are available for selection.

If guys like Crichton keep putting up decent performances, Subes will need to perform week in and week out.

It is not heresy to not pump up the tyres of all of our players all of the time.

If Barlow and Ibbo came in tomorrow - who misses out of Saturdays team?

Ibbotson and Mora are certainly in our best midfield rotation.

Morabito is very important as it allows Pavlich time forward, plus as I have proven time and time again Mems - you don't understand football.

Morabito is a massive unit, breaks open the game, tackles hard and in modern football can kick over zones .....yeah I'll rate him as one of our better midfield options.

Ibbo - certainly turned the corner, he is quick, tall, agile and skillful. Give him a few games back and then you can go away on work for a few months without internet access again.

Suban has played well so far this year - averaging ~ 20 disposals @ 83% efficiency (2/3rds of which have been kicks) and 5 tackles a game. Hopefully he can improve his 1 on 1 defence further and develop as a half back flanker before pushing to be more of a full time mid.

When Barlow returns he may play more as a forward in a bid to have him play earlier.

What excites me about our young midfielders is the x-factor they all possess. Hill, Fyfe, Morabito, Barlow etc are all capable of breaking games apart in numerous ways. You have the line breaking abilities of Hill and Mora plus the football nous, ball magnet and marking abilities of Fyfe and Barlow. Furthermore, each of these players can also hurt the opposition on the scoreboard.

I think the only missing piece of the puzzle is a run with type player who can also get plenty of the ball. Perhaps they could try giving this role to Palmer. He has a large tank but lacks confidence at the moment. Giving him such a task to focus on could be beneficial. I also could see De Boer in this role, tackle hard and dishing out quick handballs from in the pack. I am also happy to see De Boer's kicking has improved this season (at least field kicking wise, haven't see him take a set shot yet).

Suprised to see someone rating Ibbo above Suban especially as a potential midfielder.

Ibbo has struggled in midfield/wing when given opportunity.
They found a role for him down back(role suban doing now) but many complained how soft he was an his total lack of awareness.
Was always thinking he had more space an time an getting caught holding the ball.
For some reason though the coaches like him in that role.
So when Ibbos fit i dont see it as a straight swap.
I see a Lower,Roberton possibly even Palmer :( dropped
Suban pushes into midfield.
Reason Suban will be moved from that role is defensively he is too short an has no jump, so he doesnt compete very well in the air.

Palmer needs to be getting close to 30+ disposals a game very soon if he wants to keep his spot.
Reason is he isnt as damaging with his disposals so he needs to be the link man, the in an under guy.
Otherwise better to play a more damaging player.

Still a big Palmer fan an hoping he should be over his injury fully now an ready to get back to his best

I see Suban as a Shannon Hurn type player, good off half back with a booming kick, can pinch hit in the middle but only in short bursts.

Ibbo - dispite being talked up time & time again as an automatic in once fit.. I can't see it. His awareness is lacking, as is match fitness and he hasn't previously shown he can play midfield successfully or consistently.

I'm a Bovine Without a Cause Sman.

I like the idea of Suban, Ibbo, Van Berlo, Roberton, Crichton. Pitt and Crowls having to perform to hold a spot.

Modern footy is about the spread and run, Ibbo is a good athlete with good skills.

His defensive game gets knocked here, however if he was fully fit and we meet C'Wood - I'd have him run with Pendlebury in a heart beat.

Suban had a good game v Adelaide, I'd love him to follow it up against the Roos

The way Suban moves through packs impresses me. A player that looks to shift the ball forward at all costs. I also like that when we're under pressure, he lifts a gear. It's like he has a sense for momentum shifts or something.

Funny how Memories continually rates Palmer as top echelon in our side.

Hey Clay - just tailor made a thread for you ;)

What Palmer was doing in 2008, and unfortunately hasn't recaptured it yet. Going hard into a pack and coming out with the ball.

God no.

Hurn as the agility of a common house brick.

Suban can weave in and out of traffic.

Hurn can kick it a distance, he's average one on one.

Am not expecting him to be back until next year but why would he be doing running (and decent paced runs) if he's not going to play anytime soon?

Rehabilitation. He needs to build up all the leg muscle (quadriceps in particular) he would've lost; it takes time.

Pitt and Palmer

Its all good to talk about the 20+ players that may rotate through our midfield but more importantly, who will be the superstars?
the Voss, Aker, Black, Lappin (or Judd, Cousins, Kerr) combination is what wins flags.
for freo i see Fyfe, Hill, Mundy, Barlow and Morabito as the ones with that sort of potential.

Possibly, but for mine I'd have Silvagni for him, when ready. He impressed me in the pre-season
Pitt was a little untidy, and also is still too light to compete body on body, and Ibbotson is better there, for now.
Barlow is Palmer on 'roids.
I thought Suban's last two games have been fantastic, descision making and disposal wise

I think we can put Pitt in there. Looks to have so much time with the ball, great user. Will be like Fyfe - skinny kid who keeps getting better and better. The Pendlebury comparison is good.

According to SC ranking, he's sixth at the club. Also coming third for kicks, fifth for effective disposals and third for tackles. I think he's having a good season so far, just needs to maintain consistency.
