Just jotting down all our players that can be considered as mids and seeing what their secondary roles may be.
Given we have as many Mids (including wingers) that should all have claims for senior spots, they'll all at times need to settle into other roles.

Cripps - CHF
Setterfield - Forward pocket
Kennedy - HFF
Fisher - Wing / HFF
SPS - Wing / HFF
Walsh - Wing / HFF
Dow - Wing / HFF
Stocker - HBF
O'Brien - HBF
Cuningham - HFF & run with shut down role.
ECurnow - HFF - & shut down role.
Murphy - Small forward
Polson - HBF / shut down role.

That's the way I see it for now.
When Cripps is resting forward FF is definitely his go imo - he won't be outbodied and has the strength and agility to do something with it if it hits the ground.

Cripps to half forward flank at times in a game maybe but he will always start midfield on the ball surely. Its like saying Peter Hudson is handy at tackling lets shove him in the centre as a tagger. Well you wouldnt.
He is a huge midfielder but not huge against a big CHB.
Slight exaggeration buddy, a CHF is the most important position on the ground, to compare putting someone there with turning a champions FF Into a tagger is just plain stupid.

You might want to read what I wrote again......because you have clearly misconstrued the logic. And I arent buddy. I loathe that term regardless of its intent.

Carlton is a little different - has three key forwards rotating.

Mostly see two key forwards presenting down the wings

Chf is the most important position on the ground? What decade is this.

Thought the same. Do we also have 3 Key position players? McGovern is 191cm. Charlie 194cm.

McKay is 200 plus. IMO that’s key position.

I see us as mobile and very hard to match up on. Dangerous in the air and on the ground

I see where its headed..but size is not the be all and end all about key position.
I think when Bolts talks spine he is talking key position. How that translates on the ground will be interesting over time.

TDK Macreadie & BSOS are genuine key position players. Goddard as well. Kerr looks it as well.

I like that we are mobile and can be good in the air and on the ground.

I watched a replay of the NB vs Port Melbourne game last night and we really need to get Sam Fisher on our list sooner rather than later, he has all the tools to be an absolute gun for us, he has a cannon for a left foot, knows how to win his own ball and regularly kicks goals. I think someone will take him in the mid season draft if we don’t get in first and it will be Lambert all over again, we should have taken him instead of Cottrell imo as he is a proven quantity and can play straight away as a mid or a forward, maybe even use him at half back with his left foot cannon. I will spew if someone takes him ahead of us.

Key Quote: "Will Setterfield and Sam Walsh will join a young onball group that also features Zac Fisher, Paddy Dow, Sam Petrevski-Seton, Matthew Kennedy and David Cuningham this season, lessening the intense burden on Cripps' shoulders last year."

How good can our midfield be this year?

Cripps
Cripps is a known entity - no.1 contested beast in the game and will lead us ferociously game in-game out.

Veterans Cripps is supported by 2 veterans:
Murphy - 29 touches last night, hope he can finally play his natural, silky game this year
Curnow - 25 touches last night, he's an accumulator, was a tackling machine last year. I hope he plays a link up role between the arcs, but mainly focuses on shutdown and tackling as we no longer need his disposal numbers

Talented Youth The youth this year is finally starting to shine:

SPS - 18 touches last night, very silky and only made a couple of errors. The more he can find the ball, the better. Love his disposal

Fisher - 22 touches last night, he's such a dynamic, wily and explosive player. How good is it to have him back? Had his jump last year and hope he can build on it.

Dow - 21 touches last night, he looks substantially bigger, will continue to improve but we probably need patience with him as he learns to play with his bigger frame

Walsh - 24 touches last night, WTF this kid is a beauty. The biggest thing that stood out to me is that he already had the confidence to back himself in to get around a man, to beat a man, to keep up with the pace of AFL. This is something that it took Dow 2/3 of the season last year. Walsh made a few errors last night, but I'm glad he's taking the game on and acting like he belongs already. Contrast this with someone like Weitering who was a boss in juniors, couldn't match it at AFL level so played within his shell (and is only now starting to realise he can be dominant at AFL too)

Setterfield - 24 touches last night, damn I love this kid. Showed signs of rust (e.g. that lazy out on the full while tryna rush the ball) but will be a jet.

Cuningham - 22 touches, it's all about mentality for Cunners. I had such big hopes in year 1, and then through the injury riddled period recently, that hope started to wane. This guy has the tools to be such a dangerous half forward. If he can overcome his demons/jitters at AFL level (which it looks like he's going to do), we have an absolute beauty again.

Kennedy, LOB and Lang to come in as well...however perhaps they can replace guys like Garlett and Fasolo who I don't see making it.

When was the last time we saw someone other than Cripps, Murphy or Curnow get 20+ disposals. Last night we had 5!

How good can our midfield be this year?

Or in two years? When H, Charlie Weiters etc are in their prime also

It’s a great post but why do people write off players like Garlett & Fasolo so easily???

Garlett is a young footballer and learning a new role. Finally fit

Fasolo hasn’t played any consistent football for nearly 2 years. Has class and a goal kicker

Give them a chance. Amazing what fitness, experience and confidence can do

Interesting how people now rate Cuningham. Very different last year [emoji848]
