OK now the way I see our midfield at the moment we have a 3 definite locks.

Kerr, Priddis and Shuey.

You could also probably make a case for any of Rosa, both Selwoods and Embley. Ebert has found himself a spot on the HFF and seems to be doing well.

My question is, Masten and Gaff look to be knocking on the door so who makes way for these 2?
Masten has always been given priority when fit most likely due to his draft pick and Gaff has performed enough to show he belongs.

We all agree we need one more A grade midfielder so who will get the chop to help us develop another one?

Someone in the current rotations will find themselves either in defence, up forward or on the pine to make way for our next A Grade Defender.

As fantastic as Embley has been this year, if he continues next year, and he should, may pinch hit where needed off the bench, or as our sub, if that rule is still in effect, rather than having a regular role through there.

This would allow Gaff a permanant role if he comes on as planned. Will he be our next A Grader?

Swift and Masten have been in the system for several years and need to improve and show their value or else they should be moved on.

Ebert is the one that intrigues me. Really he does and as much of a vocal supporter of his as i've been if he cant grab a place in the midfield then i would like him moved on as i just feel the medium sized marking forward who can run through the middle role is lecras and i would like a genuine hard tackling, pack reading goal sneak down there. The way port are going even with the name i dont think there is anyway we would prise their first pick from them for ebert but would we be able to get the crows first rounder for him and then something along the lines of our first rounder plus the crows first rounder (14+16?) for rich.

Building a premiership side is to my mind is getting as much talent as you can through youth, developing it, finding the holes and trading players in to fill those holes. I see our future backline and i think yep very solid, i see our future forward line and think yep very solid and then i see our future midfield and i think yep need 1 more quality outside player who kicks goals and one more A grader. I think rich would be that A grader for us.

Most people around here tend to very heavily overrate draft picks and personally im not sure 14+16 would get the job done for rich unless he wanted to come home (whether that is through really wanting to come home or from the combination of that + a great contract) but i really do think rich will be a genuine A grader especially in a side like ours which is already stocked for future inside talent. With this being the last year of kerr's contract (correct me if im wrong) and with him very likely to be taking a very significant paycut would a 5 year 3 million dollar deal be too much to pay for rich?

It's all rotational anyway, i'd say the only one who needs to stay there is priddis as he's just at home there so much where as the others can offer something elsewhere for short periods.

In position:

HB: Waters, Brown, Hurn
C: Gaff, Priddis, Sheppard
HF: Darling, Kennedy, LeCras

Ruck: Naita, Shuey, Scooter

Swift, Stevens, Masten, Ebert, Rosa, Smith, Strijk, Hams, Weedon can rotate through there. Not all of those blokes will make it though and some might displace the ones I have in the midfield atm.

Waters, Scooter, Darling and Naita add a bit of hardness. Shuey, Sheppard, LeCras and Gaff have some class and Priddis adds the consistancy and main clearance work. At this stage Shuey will be an A grader and mabye Sheppard, Gaff, Darling or LeCras could become A grade mids... mabye.

I dont think Swift will ever make it to be honest. WCE took a punt and sometimes they dont come off.

If Masten can stay on the field I think he can be a decent player.

Scott Selwood was one of the main culprits in disposal efficiency. Even though he did some good work in the clearance aspect his disposal was horrible. Embley, Priddis and S Selwood all had games where their disposal sucked balls. Surely that wont happen again.

Scott Selwood had 73% DE
Priddis 48% DE
Shuey 57% DE
Kerr 71% DE

What are you talking bout?
Kerr is always getting the ball in contested situations. I remember in the 3rd qtr I think S Selwood getting a handball from Natainui running in the centre square toward 50 and kicking an absolutely shocking kick under no pressure.

So your statement that his disposal was 'horrible' is based on one piece of play?

Priddis is our Shaun McManus. We will never win a premiership with him as a starting member of our midfield and the sooner the coaches realise it the better off we will be in the long run.

I get the feeling Swift needs to play at AFL level to continue to develop his game, which seems unlikely ATM unless an opportunity comes up through injury to one of your starting inside midfielders.

I don't think any of our mids need to make way for Gaff and/or Masten. The way football is played these days it is only really the centre bounce where you set up with three pure mids. After that wingers and flankers come into most stoppage type scenarios and you end up with about 10 'mids' some with a forward bias (i.e. players like Didak, Chapman, Cooney etc) and some with a more defensive bias (i.e. A.Selwood) but all still essentially midfielders. I think we are probably a midfielder or two short at the moment (on the basis I believe our mids should be rotating through the wing and flanks) and thus I would have at least one, maybe both of Gaff and Masten in the side without removing any of our current mids (but maybe rotating them a bit more through the flanks, wings and bench).

I was merely comparing Scott Selwood's 'horrible' disposal efficiency to some of our other midfielders in today's game.

Your assertion regarding Scott Selwood is like having hoes in different area codes. It's ludicrous.

McManus wasnt even close to Priddis. Dont let the haircut fool you. Priddis is way superior in the inside stuff.

I mentioned this in the main board a week ago. Does everyone forget he was part of our 07 squad? We could of won a premiership that year. With other decent midfielders around him his inside work is a benefit to the team.

adam selwood will probably make way in the next few weeks if not this week for gaff or masten and like bones should only be considered back up.If needed would rather see him come back into the side tho instead of swift.
When Gaff and masten are back in the midfield I think we have a good young exciting group, hopefully helped by picking up one of the exciting 16yos up for grabs

I understand the sentiment on both sides of the fence in regards to Priddis and his disposal. However I think a lot of people are ignoring how important his consistency and experience is at this stage in a group of young developing midfielders. We know he's not going to break games apart, but his presence alone at the moment allows other mids play their more natural positions without the onus and responsibility of having to lead by example when the going gets tough.
Young players often go missing, by either their own hand getting caught spectating or with a hard tag. More importantly, they tend to get shut out of big games against quality opponents. Shuey's performance yesterday is a perfect example of this. The 'messiah' had had a quiet game when we needed him the most. It happens.

Its arguable that Priddis will be still be a necessary part of our team when we are legitimately vying for a premiership. What isn't arguable is his value to our team right now.

I like him but believe he's slowing down the development of Masten and Swift. GHe's in his prime at the moment, but his ceiling is 3-5 mid in a contending side, not top 2 mid. To get where we need to go guys like Masten and Swift should be getting games as the inside mid extractor role. Tough call, but I believe that both Masten and Swift have higher ceilings than Priddis and they need time in the centre square to improve.

we need to find more natural goal kicking midfielders ,we have maybe got 3 in Kerr ,Shuey , Embley and thats about it .

Priddis , Adam + Scott Selwood ,Ebert ,Masten ,Rosa struggle to kick goals .

If we can convert Lecras to run through the middle and get Sheppard and Hurn playing as midfielders rotating occasionally too ,this will help the goal kicking spread..

This sounds like a lot of mids but a check of collingwood`s team shows 11 or 12 players that can be rotated through there midfield with out losing much drive.

Full of shit, he's far above a shaun mcmanus, he is lethal in close, one of the best at stoppages in the league and plays to his strengths. He has a role to play, notice when priddis is quiet we generally get smashed in the middle. He has one bad game and its "get rid of him" he plays 5 good games in a row and it's "hmmm he's alright but there's better" .. he just can't win.
