For the first time in a very very long time it looks like we have many options for the skipper of Carlton, The 3 i have selected look like they have leadership in spades.. Not trying to kick Murph out the door just yet but i think when the time is right and these boys are ready he will be happy to stand aside.

FWIW i think it will be Paddy.

I think Weitering will be a natural leader, but doesnt have the energy I want in a captain.

I think Cripps will be a leader in the way he influences games in the middle and power his way through, but theres something to be said for a captain not being your best player.

Docherty gets the chocolates in the regard that he is a strong competitor, a good long term prospect with an undeniable love for the club, the jumper and what it means to be blue.

I think Cripps will be the next leader, and he will be a Carey/Voss like leader dragging his team mates across the line with his own actions.

Depends on how long Murphy goes on for, but wouldn't be surprised to see Ed given a go for a couple of years before the younger blokes.

Doc is in a great position for it. Has always loved Carlton, is very intelligent, articulate, hard working and plays in a position where be can see the whole field. Perfect for a general.

Cripps needs 2-3 more seasons to refine his game before we mantle him with the burden of captaincy. Let him grow into the midfield beast that he appears born to be without adding to his pressure levels.

My 2c is that a captain is best situated in the HB or HF line as they are able to see more of the game and direct traffic. In the guts where its bullets and grenades, few players are capable except of the highest calibre.

Must admit i am slightly surprised Docherty is the overwhelming favourite at the moment.

Those saying Half backs make the best captains, i am not sure how you reached that conclusion.. Currently in the AFL there is 11 players who mids, 2 who are KPFs and 2 that HB (Bob Murphy & Shannon Hurn).

Nothing against Docherty, i just think that you can see the players respect and admiration for Cripps, when he stands up and wins a big contested ball you can see the rest of the team lift around him similar to Jobe Watson, he speaks beyond his years when speaking in public so this is why IMO he is the obvious choice. ...

I think it's because a few posters here see him eventually moving into a midfield / utility role, hence some comparisons with Luke Hodge.
Ultimately though, he currently plays in a position where he sees the game unfolding and is already acting as captain of the backline. As mentioned, he is also a 'Carlton' boy and fits the right age group. Cripps and Weiters would probably be too young/inexperienced when Murph passes the mantle, which could be as soon as next year.

I want the next Captain to be an aggressive bull who leads by example - beating all midfielders in the competition where it matters- on ball and around clearances. Backs and forward leaders are lieutenants - not Captains. If Docherty can move to an on ball role and be a genuine leader where they are needed most - around congestion/contested clearance situations and can lift the whole side when it matters- then fine. We don't need a passionate good looking trier - we need genuine respected on ball beasts to lead.

I want a mongrel to lead the side- someone who can kick arse on field when required - something we haven't had for far too many years.

Cripps for me. He will be that inspirational skipper. He is mature beyond his years, his work ethic is never questioned, and he sets an example.
For me he will be captain by 23-24 when Murph steps down. When i think of Cripps of Captain i think of Carey & Voss. Someone who will step up and inspire his teammates and bring them with him.

It will be interesting to see if Weitering will be a Captain if Cripps gets it as they are only 2 or 3 years apart. I suspect down the track it could be co-captains with Cripps and Weitering.

While i like Docherty and think he would make a great captain, i think he will be more a Simmo like leader. Bleeds blue.

I think Cripps, his presence on the field and his emotion to lift the boys on field already is fantastic. And hopefully he will stay a Blue and resist the temptation to go back to WA. No doubt they will be circling like vultures in few years!!

Depends when the change happens for me.
If it were next year then Doc but in 2-3 years the case for Weitering as skipper may be far too compelling.

All three are great choices in my eyes and I wouldn't have problem with any of them.

Yeah I'm not surprised at the overwhelming support for Doc at the moment. He's slightly older and slightly more experienced, so we have a bit more to go on.
If the change doesn't come for a couple of years which, let's face it, it probably won't, we will have a better read on both Cripps and Weiters and it will most likely be a blurrier proposition.
