De Valera knew full well what the consequences of not enforcing a blackout in the Irish Free State would mean for Northern Ireland following the outbreak of war. It was an especially bloody minded decision seeing as the British had made sure the Irish Free State would not be drawn into the war as we gave up the rights that we had to use certain Irish ports for military purposes under the Treaty. Enough whinging about 'anti-Catholic prejudices', I think I've made clear enough on the other thread that I have nothing against Irish Catholics per se. She seems a pretty inoffensive sort, but I do wish the media would stop with the 'all hail saint mary' routine. FFS, she's just a well off, moderately attractive australian chick who happens to have absolutely hit jackpot in the golddigger stakes.

I do think it is interesting to compare the reception she's gotten with that of Charles- Mary and Fred appear to be on a big holiday jaunt around australia, whilst Charles has spent his time visiting ostensibly publically worthy causes like burns units and tsunami victims or whatever. And yet, Charles trip is supposed to be an outrageous waste of taxpayers money and a farce, whereas we're just lucky that 'our' Mary deigned to come here and let us shell out to entertain her. I'll freely acknowledge that Charles is a very odd chap with all the charisma of a wet dishrag, but he's gotten a pretty unfair rap recently.

Amazing what being young and australian can do for your popularity.

My point exactly- Charles is a weird individual, Mary is the darling of the WW set, somehow that makes her a genuinely wonderful individual and Charles a tax leech.

One thing which really upset me about this entire thing- as far as I know, scandinavian countries used to have a custom where any interested onlookers could view a royal couple consummating their marriage so there would be no doubt as to the lineage of any heirs. (England has a very similar custom known as tabloid papers)

Now if we got to see a pr0n star type jaunt with Mary complete with cheesy 80s music and the classic 'money shot', then fine maybe the trip would have been in the public interest. But noooooooo... Mary and Fred just had to go and tread all over their heritage and break with tradition. They could have at least hooked up a webcam.
