I heard yesterday that we expect our runners to pay all of their costs on interstate trips- flights, accomodation, everything. This is a disgrace and I know of 2 potential runners that we've missed out on because of this. Anyone else think this is ridiculous in this day and age?

Well I know a bloke from Canberra who used to do running and massage for the Kangas when they were playing at Manuka or in Sydney and he was paid $0 for every match. It was purely volunteer.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if a good number of junior training/running staff for every club were unpaid. If an AFL club can get a person who is still studying massage or sports coaching or hasn't had any experience and offer them a place without dollar remuneration, most people would take it up. This saves the club money and fills essential places in the training area.

Having said that, these are junior runners and trainers I'm talking about. Regarding your rumour, I'd like a bit more detail before I start calling for the pitchforks and torches. I mean which runners? Surely you're not suggesting that Wayne Johnston is having to pay his own way after the amount the club is said to have paid for his services.

Where have you "heard" this.

Sounds like bulldust to me.

A good friend of mine was told directly by Phil Egan who did some running for us this season gone. He said that several others had knocked it back (including himself)because of this including Duncan Kellaway and Chris Burton. This is true.

Well if this true i am astounded !!!

Just can't fathom that our senior runners have to pay their own way.

What eva, it's just BS as if they would do that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought the AFL was sponsored by Qantas, who provide free flights?

Would be very surprised if the agreement only covered players and not support staff.

Of course, I never spoke to Phil Egan like the other guy did. I suspect wires getting crossed.

Exactly! Who would be? I double checked last night and the conversation went like this-

Mate- Are you doing the running next year?
Phil- I might do some in melbourne but you have to pay your own way interstate, so ******** that.
Mate- You've gotta be joking?
Phil- No you have to pay for everything, so they've tried a few ex players that are still fit, but none will do it.

So unless Phil is lying, you guys believe what you want. Contact the club and find out. This is a disgrace and a bad look for our club.

I'd urge you to calm down a little and sort through this melodrama before launching a broadside at the club labelling them as "unprofessional"...It';s actually got fucl all to do with professionalism and more to do with commercial realities. Who knows what the trends are in league ranks with this. If all runners pay there own way then why should we be offering "free rides" thats recklessness and NOT how I expect members funds to be plundered.

I expect this club to be ran like a Blue chip organisation not like some ladies auxilliary, meanwhile stop your rants and think clearly about any given situation before dispariging the RFC:eek:

I'm pretty sure champ it's not me that needs to calm down. What a ridiculous post that is. Surely a key member of our organisation shouldn't have to pay their own way, regardless of what other clubs do. If we can't afford to pay our runner's expenses then there sure does need to be an inquiry as to how they spend our money. I never ranted goose, I merely pointed out it seemed odd and unfair that our runner should pay. We are in dire financial trouble if we can't afford this.

i need the facts , circumstances, and the current trend at all AFL clubs before I shoot from the hip....it does seem odd...but we need to know the facts
