I love Essendon as much as the next bloke and I understand the importance of tradition... BUT

Our theme song needs to change.

It sucks... its like its for the kids... it's hard to be passionate and sing that song..

Don't get me wrong, Ive sung the song many times, during the 93 finals, 2000 and all the great moments but its crap in comparison to other teams songs...

Listening to the whole crowd at Geelong sing their anthem during the VFL grand final was truly a great moment for them. Richmond, hawthorn, most sides have a song that you can get into more than ours.

I'm not trying to start a war with tradition buffs, I understand your perspective, just stating that I'd love for it to be updated.

Anyone else feeling me on this?

i dont really see any problem with our current one but for the people who do i think we're safer keeping it than going for a new one. i don't usually have any problem with updating things but i can tell that if you change it everyone will complain about the new one.
i dont have high expectations for club theme songs anyway, their job is to be catchy and sing about the club

No I'm not with you and I wouldn't call myself an over the top traditionalist or sentimentalist.

You arguments are terrible, it's for the kid? Why, what is the reason there? And yet you say Hawthorns is better and it starts with "We're a happy team at Hawthorn". Nice! (Well, nice if you were trying to make me laugh).

Secondly, it is based on an old song like most victorian club themes and has a good tune. Is it brilliant? No, but not many of them are and the problem with "updating" themes is they are updated to current tastes which last 30 seconds in the grand scheme of things (or they end up like Freo and Port).

And thirdly, the lyrics are fine compared to most teams. Ok, Richmond have the "tigerland, yellow and black" thing which is great, and I guess Geelong's is a bit more up tempo but there are plenty bit in Essendons song you can raise your voice and yell in.

Finally, tradition does have it's argument to make too. If changing something would help the club in actual games or a buisiness sense then you would say to hell with tradition but in this case there is nothing really to gain (how much better are you going to make the theme honestly, and when you do people will complain it sounds wrong somehow, with a traditional song you don't have arguments between supporters because it has always been that way). On the other hand if it turns out badly and the tune/lyrics are painful, you could annoy a lot of people.

In conclusion, the rewards are little to nil and the risks are high. A few teams have betters songs but not that many IMO (and unless you had a precient advertising exec as your president back at the start of last century, probability says most teams will be overshadowed in themes and looks by others), and it's not the AFL song contest so who really cares if a few are better than us. I've never had a problem belting it out honestly.

P.S. Banjo's rule.

Edit: We also absolutely own when it comes to team colours so be grateful you don't have to wear any teal.

It should remain forever. Its been around for about 5 or 6 generations of Essendon supporters now.

But I'd be open minded to new versions. I would have to be blown away by somehing special to vote for a change though.

I agree with the colours part, I still would prefer a better song though.

Whats the highlight? 'See the bombers fly Up.. Up... to win the premiership flag"... whenever I watch the team sing the song most of em seem more embarrassed rather than to be singing it passionately... I don't think this is the case with some of the other teams...

FWIW I think Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Kangaroos, Richmond and St Kilda all have better songs than us.... considering most songs were ripped off anyway I don't see why changing it should be a problem... 100 years from now the new song will have tradition too...

I see your points... I know it won't be changed... just that there is absolutely nothing I like about our song at all and that reflects when the players sing it to singing it after the siren... just sayin..

We have a great song. Why change it?

I like all the older songs better than the newer ones like Freo's, W. Coast's and Port's.

Can't say I've seen them look embarrassed, but you are entitled to you opinion of their thoughts and facial features. For the recond I know some footy fans who think the whole singing the team song is embarrassing to begin with so each to their own.

It's not worth anything to anyone other than yourself. I don't say that in an dismissive manner, simply as a fact that unless you can reason why anyone else should agree with your subjective opinion, why would anyone agree with you or your idea to change it? If you could get 20,000 members to agree with you then you may have something approaching a consensus.

And while we are talking subjective I'd only have Geelong and Richmond clearly ahead in my personal taste (St Kilda would be there to, but seeing as every single team with "saint(s)" in their name uses "When the Saints Go Marching In" they get no credit). But then, that is just my opinion.

I see your points... I know it won't be changed... just that there is absolutely nothing I like about our song at all and that reflects when the players sing it to singing it after the siren (in your opinion)... just sayin..

And here is the problem, it's just your opinion.

you've got to be kidding me...

Our song is awesome! I love it. It's got the lot: brass, banjo, old school singing, awesome timing - the works! The new songs suck arse. Yes it's jaunty, but our song is original and should never, ever change. Maybe you're very young or something yourself, I don't know, but you know nothing about tradition. I've sung that song at the MCG after 2 Essendon premierships and I can't imagine anything else ringing around a packed MCG after our next freakin' premiership

I agree it's a shocking song. Let's go get the guys who did Freo's song ASAP

Let's just use the below. I am sure the Freo guys could not better it.

I reckon the current tune has a lot going for it. Must admit though, I reckon they could modernise some of the lyrics a bit though.......

I am not the biggest fan however why change it? The greatest things about theme songs in general is that they bring back memories of terrible loses i.e. 99 to Carlton and great victories - then entire 2000 season!!!

In the same way i hate hearing Carlton's opening tune and happy team at hawthorne other supporters hate hearing See the Bombers fly up as they walk away from the grounds!!

My favourite lines are "Our boys who play this grand old game, always striving for glory and fame!" Classic.

Glory and fame occur as a consequence of victory of course, so hopefully this year will be glorious, we make those we defeat famous, and our own don't become famous by drunkenly crashing their cars in the pub car park. No glory in that.

They will try their best, but they can't get near!''

haha all the other clubs are such try-hards

they'll never get within an inch of essendon

In a totally unrelated topic, are Freo still changing their song?

Yes,it was announced during the week that FFC have paid for the rights to use the song "Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M.

Good choice i reckon:thumbsu:

What is the good part in St Kilda's song?
The part where they, um, oh wait they just keep repeating the same words!!
I'll agree Richmond, Melbourne and North Melbourne all have better songs than us, but hey that's only 3 teams.
You can't be the best at everything.. we're #1 at winning flags so let some of the other teams have something to be happy about with their songs :p

I honestly think our song is the best out of all the teams, simply because it is Essendon's. To me, changing it would be akin to changing the colours of the guernsey.
