1
Luke Molan - Pick number 9, 2001 Draft.
Players who went after him
13 - Nick DalSanto
17 - James Kelly
21 - Matt Maguire
71 - Brian Harris
Our top pick in the super draft. What an absolute waste. Now running around in Frankston VFL reserves. DalSanto in hindsight.

2
Chris Lamb - Pick Number 13, 1998 Draft.
Player who went after him
16 - Brett Burton
19 - Nick Davis
29 - Tyson Stenglein
33- Craig Bolton
38 - Brendan Fevola
57 - Andrew Embely
Fevola would be handy at FF

3
Donald Cockatoo-Collins - Pick number 11, 1995 Draft.
Players who went after him
19 - Barry Hall (I'm going to cry)
27 - Kane Johnson
48 - Darren Milburn
56 - Daniel Bradshaw
DCC played 9 ripping games for the club.

4
Nick '426' Smith - Pick number 15, 2002 Draft.
Players who went after him
19 - Troy Selwood
26 - Jared Rivers (426 before Rvers ?? wtf??)
37 - Brent Staker
72 - Brad Fisher

5
Trent Ormond-Allen - Pick number 10, 1993 Draft.
Players who went after him
12 - Chris Scott
14 - Adam Simpson
40 - Matthew Lappin
note - Nathan Buckley was traded for pick 12

An interesting post - but do we attribute dud picks with players who were attacked by injury?

I think the worst one in memory was wasting a pick on Gary Moorcroft

Excuse me while I go polish my gun...

:o

I guess I take comfort knowing we got Bruce at 60+, Robbo from Almost Football Legends, Junior was a rookie and of course Davey.

Still... Imagine our team with Hall, Dal Santo and Stenglein.
Oh the pain!

Yes, isn't hindsight a wonderful thing.

Molan still can't get over his injuries and I haven't given up on Smith.... or Lamby.:o

Smith is an interesting one. It will be a great AFL story if he can get over his injuries and get a regular gig in the seniors.

Keep up the good work 426. :thumbsu: :)

Then again look how many players we snagged with late draft picks or from the rookie list.

1997 - Pick 66 - Nathan Brown
1997 - Pick 77 - Guy Rigoni
1999 - Pick 50 - Matthew Whelan
1999 - Pick 64 - Cameron Bruce
2001 - Pick 55 - Brad Miller
2002 - Pick 66 - Ryan Ferguson

1996 - Pre Season Draft - Andrew Leoncelli
1997 - Pre Season Draft - Shane Woewodin
1999 - Pre Season Draft - Troy Simmonds

1997 - Rookie List - James McDonald
1997 - Rookie List - Russell Robertson
1998 - Rookie List - Peter Walsh
1998 - Rookie List - Daniel Ward
2000 - Rookie List - Troy Broadbridge
2001 - Rookie List - Darren Jolly
2002 - Rookie List - Mark Jamar
2003 - Rookie List - Nathan Carroll
2004 - Rookie List - Aaron Davey

Robertson, McDonald, Bruce, Davey, Carroll, Brown, Jamar, Whelan, Miller and Ferguson are all in our best 22.

Walsh, Ward, Rigoni, Leoncelli and Woewodin all gave us good service over the years.

Woewodin's trade landed us Daniel Bell who is currently in the senior side as well.

Jolly's trade allowed us to get Lynden Dunn who is laying well in the seniors.

Broadbridge loked like a promising player in 2004 before he was cruelly taken away.

Simmond's didn't have any impact and his subsequent trade Ellis didn't either, but we knew we picked a good player and he is showing it at Richmond.

That is a good list of players. If only we could get some good high picks we would be unbeatable.

I disagree with ellis not having an impact, he was a very important player in 2002 untill he done his knee, Losin him and Nicholson in the same year (who also was in good form) really cost us.

Didnt we have two Cockatoo Collins?

To think there were 3, and we took the two real duds.
and the dud Gaspar, luckily though we got the good ottens.

I think that Darren Kowal at pick 3 was a shocking pick. I know its not as bad as some of those 5 you mentioned but at least they had excuses. I also know that Kowal played about 100 games or so, but he only got a game because we were so goddamned terrible.
Andrew Lamprill was a high draft pick too iirc, and Brent Grgic and Glenn Molloy were also fairly high (top 20?) picks who didnt kick on

If i remember correctly Brent Grgic was picked before Richmond's Nathan Brown. That's disappointing.

Quite a few of those picks have been on tall players ahead of midfielders as we've picked for needs rather than best player available.

Brent Grgic was the worst by a mile.

Looking back on those, we stuffed a few up, although when you look at the Cockatoo Collins pick, we still had alot of talls at the time. Many were injured, but we still went with more smalls. Or else we probably would have gone for a guy like Hall, but with Jako, Neitz, Lyon, Schwarz etc. all still on the list, he was overlooked IMO.

Those were the days sigh....

atleast our 2003, 2004 and hopefully 2005 (Bartram looks decent and Jones has big wraps on him) drafting has been decent.

imagine if Dunn rocked up to round 1 next year an absolute tank.....a bit of strength and he could start kicking some big bags early on. Best he does it sooner rather than later while he can still get under the oppositions guard *cough* Milburn *cough*

i didnt see grgic as the biggest dud. we also traded him to geelong for pick 55 which got us brad miller...

also saw us trade troy longmuir to freo for pick 19 which gained us brad green:thumbsu:

I realise its just a bit of hindsight by going through this exercise and there have been some mistakes, however, think about it this way.

When players who become champions or even servicable are taken late (i.e. a pick 30 onwards) each club has missed them at least twice.

Look at Hird....everyone missed him multiple times and Essendon took him late.

Some players just ain't much chop at an early age and blossom later. It's sometimes a bit of a guessing game.

Agree though....looking at some of the players we've taken!!

This is slightly off topic, but man it makes me happy to see Heffernan struggle at the celler-dwellers.

Heartless gimp!
