Had nothing to do today, so was reviewing our list of players, and was surprised at how few games our list had played:

18 players who have played less than 15 games.
8 players who have played between 15 - 49 games
2 players who have played between 50 - 100 games
7 players who have played between 101 - 149 games
3 players who have played between 150 - 200 games
Nil who have played between 201 - 249 games, and
2 players who have played over 250 games.

The stats were taken off the North web site.

We really are an inexperienced side, but who should still make the 8 this year.
For me this year looms as an exciting year, with so many young players pushing for selection.

The bracket of players that have only played between 50-100 (2) is a direct result of us trading in the drafts we acquired thompson and hay. I am glad we have finally got a list manager to plan for the longer term future of the club. We are moving in the right direction but we have to fill some holes this year and in the comming years.

Interesting, i have 2 questions, where are we when it comes to the average age of our list? where are we when it comes to average games played?

In addition to the 18 players who have played under 15 games, add the six rookies! 24 players with under 15 games experience.

Puts the possible trade of Jones, Harris and McIntosh in perspective.

It shows how much faith BF posters are placing in those at the bottom end of experience. (Not suggesting this is good or bad; just noticing that a lot of emphasis is placed on the likes of Urquhart, Hansen, Thompson, Goldstein, Ross, Adams, Riggio, Grima.)

Hate to be picky, but hasn't Alan Obst played one AFL game?

I thought he played in a game on the Gold Coast where he punctured his lung?

Correct me if I'm wrong?
I see you spotted my deliberate omission.

Pity you (we) were corrected by an Essendon supporter. That does it. Is there a Lionel Richie concert I can hide out in?

Interesting to note that North have the 3rd least amount of experience of all clubs, averaging 58.2 games per player with only Brisbane (56.2 games) and Melbourne (52.0 games) below them.

Interestingly though we are ranked 9th overall for age. With an average age of 23 years and 120 days. So although alot of our players are very inexperienced we have a relatively 'middle of the road' side in terms of age. Although I think this is considerably due to the large gap between our older, more experienced players and our younger brigade, hence the stat (2 players who have played between 50 - 100 games) provided by Kangamad. Once our more experienced players (Simpsons, Harvey, Rawlings, Petrie, and Watt) move on we will have one of the youngest lists in the AFL. Definitely good signs for the future.

This suggests that our coaching staff are reluctant to play our young kids on a consistent basis. Although this is quite common knowledge these statistics support this theory. Whether this is due to the fact of our lack of high draft picks resulting in lower quality players who aren't quite ready for AFL or that or selection team just don't like playing the kids i'm not sure.

So are list isn't young (on average), it's just that alot of our younger players aren't given enough chances.

I'm just rambling here but hopefully there is something in there of value.

We really get the best of both worlds there, don't we? Inexperienced older players! ;)

The playing history of the likes of Brown, Green and Sansbury suggest a conservative approach to selection, in which a known quantity, even one with little upside, is preferred over a younger player. That said, other factors like injuries have played their role too. Consider Trotter, Urch and Blake Grima in previous years and more recently, Smith, Urquhart, Swallow, Nathan Grima and Adams. Until 07 I'm not sure there was the talent to demand the spots.

Since then we've seen Campbell and Thomas demand selection, Urquhart and Hansen following in their footsteps and the likes of Ross, Riggio, Adams on the list.

Once our more experienced players (Simpsons, Harvey, Rawlings, Petrie, and Watt) move on we will have one of the youngest lists in the AFL. Definitely good signs for the future.
Don't go moving Petrie on just yet will ya? ;)

My bad. :p

We regularly recruit late bloomers and have quite a few rookies who have taken a few years to come good.

Very true. Although by 'late bloomers' I think you may mean recycled players. Some of these recruits currently on the list include Edwards, Pratt, Power and Obst. Some of the oldies not on the list anymore include J.Hay, J.Rawlings, N.Thompson and L.Brown (thank god! :D).

Also players who haven't debuted until they are a little older like Gibson, Josh Smith, Spud, Hunter S and others who have come off the rookie list. A couple of mature recruits too.

I wouldn't say Obst is recycled.

Can't believe how little games Gibson and Pratty have played and yet have such an impact in our defense.

JWS , Urquhart & Hansen have played 54 games between them , when that figure gets to 150 , we will be a very difficult unit to play against !

For me this year looms as an exciting year, with so many young players pushing for selection.

I think that these stats will look quite different in a short amount of time. For instance, even half-way through next season, the number of players in the 15-49 games bracket will increase to 12, 50-100 will increase to 4 and 150-200 to 5 while at seasons end (barring injury [fingers crossed]) the bracket of players playing 15-49 games will increase to 14 and 50-100 to 7.

Agreed though, our youngish list is light in experience, though we do have a great number of players within the same, relative age brackets (15 between the ages of 17-20), (13 players between the ages of 21-24), (12 players between the ages of 25-28) and only three players 29+ years.

It all looks well for the next few years, if a) the players can stay realtively injury free, b)team selection allows for a relatively stable team and c)people's development corresponds to their experience. If these things happen, we are likely to really challenge for the flag over the next three years.
