I wouldnt call The Wire overrated. It deserves the praise, and is still relatively unseen in terms of pop culture.
Homicide is rated fine I think, just unseen by most, or somewhat forgotten by those old enough to have watched it back in the day.
The Wire is a great show but the way people wank over it constantly is a bit excessive. It's not without its flaws. HLOTS gets ignored these days, there's a bit of an attitude that any TV drama that wasn't produced by HBO is second-rate.

The acclaim around Breaking Bad and Mad Men beg to differ a little.

I get what you're saying, but that sort of attitude is tied in to HBO's proven track record (well, aside from lately, which has seen some utter shit being produced by them). No other channel has produced the highs of HBO in my view.

Bit of an easy one but...
Overated: anything on commercial tv
Underrated; anything not on commercial tv I.e. thrones, break bad, sons of anarchy etc

Have to disagree here, breaking bad is fairly well known I would have thought.

I think thats more to do with Homicide basically being from an era of strong 90's episodic procedurals. Plus, it's set in Baltimore, not in somewhere like NY or LA, or even Chicago. That on face value isnt as glamorous as some current HBO programs. Plus there were crossover eps with Law & Order, so for some that could devalue the show.

However, Homicide did get some rave reviews throughout most of its run, won peabodys and Braugher won Best Actor at the Emmys one year. Hey, it's my favourite too. Just trying to explain why it could be overlooked, especially on face value. And if it is overlooked, who cares really. The fanbase will still love it regardless. Obviously most 20 somethings have never seen it, so naturally it doesnt get talked about.

I think The Wire praise is fine, dont have any issues with it. It's not like everyone calls The Wire the greatest show of all-time, but when people do, it is rather justified.

Only overrated in the sense that they were a cracking punk/rock/pop band who somehow became caught up in the whole grunge revolution bullshit. Somehow they became the antithesis of the hair/glam bands, and every commercial MTV dickhead was all over them because they were un-commercial, and that became the trend. Is that a decent example of irony?

Cracking little band though.
