Pagan may have hinted re: 2006 draft

Or the other scenario is....

Murphy recieves the ball from Blackwell, has a run through the corridor and takes on Judd and kicks it to Hansen on the lead....and then i wake up.

I thought it was the greatest press conference that Pagan has provided all season. There was about 1 minute of squeezing together all his favourite 'we suck, but we're young' cliches, and then it was all about about the list and recruitment.

It was great to see. The season is ABSOLUTELY GONE and talking about the game seems pointless, especially when the results are a formality these days.

The clues Pagan gave the press were as such:
1) We need another key backmen (???)
2) We need one more midfielder (Gibbs)
3) We want to recruit a home sick interstate player (Gardiner)

KEY: (" ") = reading between the lines. :D

I doubt Polak would want to come to Victoria. In fact it sounds like West Coast are interested in him.

What he was saying about Waite was kind of odd. One minute he's a backmen. The next minute he's a forward. Personally I would play Walker as a key backmen. -At least until one of Bower, Hartlett or Irish can fill that gap. I have absolutely no issue with trying Walker in a variety of positions. The more roles he learns, the better the skills he'll absorb. If he's gonna be the next Kouta, this is the path he must take.

Gardiner is from WA. He also said a 'home sick kid'. I took that to mean a Meeson or a Rischitelli. Matt Moody has said publicly he wants more money in his new contract. Wouldn't be the worst guy to get in the P.S.D.

During his press conference (shown on Fox active) I think Pagan indicated his clear preference in which way we would like to draft.

He mentioned that Ideally he would like to give Waite a crack at CHB as ideally he thought Fev, Fish & Kenenedy would work well up forward & it would solve the crisis of lack of KPP players down back.

He mentioned that he had been given a go at it several seasons back, but it was worth re-visiting.

Looks like its Bryce Gibbs come on down, option 1.

I'd actually like to see us get Bryce with pick 1 or 2, wishfully trade pick 17-18 or 19-20 for Polak, and then use the other round 2 pick to get a ruckman.
Waite's old man made a hugely successful change from inconsistent forward to champion, premiership CHB, so it may be history revisted. Be worth a shot.

if waite is moved to CHB and is tried this year, it may prove that we don't need a top KPP in the draft. It means our defence stocks will rise.

But i guess he has to perform first, which he may not.

Pagan has no say and should have no say in who we do or do not select early in the draft. That should be left in the hands of our very capable recriutment staff.

Sorry i cant agree, Denis should have a big say in what type of players he wants as in mids, backs ruck etc, I agree that the recruiters should do the picking of the individual player, but the coach has to have a say in the player type.

Not with early picks. We pick the best available, players we can build the side around, then with the second round plus players we keep in mind the deficiencies on our list and try to address them (unless a player we rate highly slide through (eg Leroy Jetta falling through to pick 17).

Except he never played at CHB. He was a back-pocket specialist picking up the resting ruckman.

Which is by the by, but as it happens I don't think Jarrad knows the first thing about defence. Definitely a winger/forward in my book.

He was CHB in the 1970 win. Swan McKay played BP on the resting ruckman. guarantee that. As for his son as a CHB, well, we don't know. There's only one way to find out and I'm happy to give him a shot. There's nothing to lose. Midfield options is good one as he would be a prick of a match-up for the opposition given his pace and ability to play both short and tall.

Waite will be moved to CHB and will be given time to develope into the role. The thinking behind the move will be to address our deficiencey in this position but also to make Waite more consistant. He will provide strength and run in this position often draging his opponent forward. He will also add physical aggression down back which is something we have been missing for some time.

Hartlett will play a full back position of sorts and will be used to rebound with his magnificant kicks. He is the perfect size for this role and again is a very aggressive and confident player. I heards Kouta on SEN last night and from what I could tell he rates the kid.

Bower, the wraps from OX were really positive and suggested the kid could be a star. Bower offers flexibility, he has the ability to play as a spare man or close check a opponent. From what I have seen his natural game is to beat his opponent to the ball and back himself to do so while offering excellent rebound out of defence.

Thornton will be released to play a similer role to Lance, he will be the leader down back and be responsible for the fourth forward. He will even venture up onto the wing and in the centre.

Lance will be able to go forward or back depending on the dynamics of the game. Wouldn't be surprised to see him at the start of a 1/4 to be standing in the back half only to run forward.

Of course there will be smaller mid field types resting in the back half providing rebound depending on match ups. Walker must play in the centre, we will not see his true potential reached until this takes place.

People want Polak.... but you can rest assured that those same people wouldn't touch Gardiner or Aker with a 40-foot barge pole. Don't people know that GP is one of the players to test positive twice???

For those suggesting Polak no way in the world would I give pick 17 or 18 for him.

What we need to do is really work the PSD we must get a good player ( not a Dylan Maclaren ).

I really can't see us missing on 3 quality players with picks 1,17 & 18, add to that a good player in PSD + the improvement of Bower,Hartlett,Blackwell ,Kennedy,Russell. I think in 2008 we could expect to finish 7th to 10th.

Spot on. And if Gibbs is the best available, then come on down son.

Positional deficiencies should carry more weight in our decisions for later round picks, not in the first round.

that's a really good post mate!!! all we need now is a solid, quick, small defender who can play on the likes of davey and didak as well as medium sized defender who can give us plenty of drive and rebound. Craig flint could be the man:thumbsu:

Craig Flint is my preferred chioce as I think he is the type of player that we would like Teague to be and would allow Walker to move into the mid-field. From what I have seen he shows guts, aggression, versatility and poise under pressure. He is similar to Teague in many regards but is taller and of course a better athlete.

Backline:
B: Flint Hartlett Thornton
HB: Bower Waite Scotland

Other possibles to consider: Saddington (fully fit), Polak, Jackson, Edwards will all add depth.

It's getting more obvious that there is real need for rebounding types that show good skill and versatility. Who would have thought Bowden and Notting could play CHB.
