Definitely looks promising, hes been rushing the batsmen a fair bit. Hes already clocking 145km/h so no reason why he can't add an extra 5km/h at the very least. Good to see we have some raw pace as hasn't been much since Tait and Lee.

Agree with this. His current bowling action could make him susceptible to back problems. I hope the relevant coaches look into this before he does any damage.
 
A full strength NSW squad currently have; Copeland, Clark, Bollinger, Hazlewood, Lee and Starc ahead of Cummins in the fast bowling department. Obviously injury / ODI's have meant that Cummins has cracked a game, but you would think for the next 1-3 season it will be tough for him to get consistent games.

As such, hopefully not too much stress on his back!
 
i can't work out why we've got all these injuries to fast bowlers at the moment... this is only something that's happened in recent years (not injuries to fast bowlers full stop, but the amount has increased remarkebly in recent years).

i reckon it's got a lot to do with 20/20. you warm up, bowl one over, rest, cool down, tighten up a bit, bowl two overs, warmp up, cool down, bowl your final over. in the mean time you gotta throw yourself around in the field. most quick bowlers aren't the most nimble all the field, although cummins looks pretty athletic compared to most.

a quick bowler is really packing about the same amount of physicallity and intensity of a 4 or 5 hour stint in the field, into an hour and a half during a 20/20 match.

i also never really liked the limit on the length of a young quick bowlers spell's. limiting the amount of overs a young quick can bowl in a day is fine to reduce workload. don't know if these exist in other states but in sydney grade the limits about 7 yeas ago were 14 overs (Under 16), 16 overs (u17), 18 overs (u18), 20 overs (u19)... daily limites are fine and a good rule, but they also limited the spells to 5 overs (u16), 6 overs (u17), 7 overs (u18), 8 overs (u19) which meant if you got your full amount of overs there was at least three spells and the way captain's generally used young quicks, you'd normally bowl four spells which mean far more warming up and cooling down and tightening up and loss of ryhtym then was necessary. i'd much prefer to be able have the option to be able to get through your overs in two spells if the captain thought you were up to it.

as for cummins, he's a serious talent this lad. thought that game was tonight and wanted to watch him bowl so that's a bummer. nice action, does look a bit stressful but not too bad. pretty skinny so when he adds to his frame will get the ball through a bit quick. hopefully will grow another inch or so but can't do much about it if he doesn't.
 
Looks a bit like an exaggerated Dale Steyn like action for mine, the kid has massive potential. Bolt upright seam most of the time, i always like to see that in fast bowlers.

serious talent. gotta be managed well.

i'm firmly of the belief 20-20 cricket has a lot to do with the speight of injuries to cricketers, particularly quick bowlers. would hate to see this guy join the queue. Easily the most talented young quick in the country. drooling over the thought of him and James Pattinson in about 4 years time (JP should be in there quicker)

This kid really looks the goods. If managed well he'll be wearing the green and gold (and whites) for a long time.
 
Amazing that he's pushing 145 clicks at 17.

Will watch this guy with interest. 17 is bloody young to be making an impression in state cricket. You'd have to give him some chance of Australian honours before he hits his 20th birthday!
 
Starc has some pace on him as well. And Hazlewood in the u19 WC was clocking 145km/h, no idea how accurate that was but that was what they were showing.
 
key now is to manage him and his exposure to the shorter form of the game. his action is smooth. i don't reckon that will cause him too many concerns over his career, but the stop-start spells of 20-20 and the intensity in the field will most likely be his biggest problem.

he won't be ready for sheffield shield cricket for a little bit of time yet and in any case there is still some queue in front of him to get a piece of the action there and i would like to see him take some more wickets in first grade (18 wkts at 24 so far in his debut season) before he gets pulled into the FC state team.

He would still have Bollinger, Copeland, Clark, Hazlewood and Cameron in front of him although i would say he's now probably on a par with Starc in the eyes of selectors.

I think they should probably be aiming to expose him to first class cricket around about this time next year after the big bash, obviously that depends on how his development continues. maybe even hold him back to the 2012/13 season when he will be 19.

We've seen that it's hard enough for quick bowlers in their mid 20's to stay fit and play all three formats with the sheffield shield, 50-over, and 20-20 cricket let alone for a youngster who is this young....
 
NSW simply has a truckload of talented fast bowlers amazing. Are other states losing most of their athletic big guys to AFL? Hopefully some big IPL contracts, higher profiles at home with 'the big bash' can help change some of that. Surely some of these guys will have to find new homes in coming years (come to Vic Patrick lol)

Exciting times ahead for us cricket lovers, now to find a few gun spinners and swag of talented batsmen. Lyons for SA has been impressive in the last few 20/20s.

We have a lot of talented batsman in Australia, they just need to be nurtured and not rushed into the side too quickly with a truckload of expectations heaped on them.

The only area where the future isn't extremely bright is spinning, but SOK can hopefully change that.
 
A spat is starting to brew between NSW and QLD Centre of Excellence (or whatever it's called) as the CoE is trying to lure him up north and Brian Taber for NSW is strongly suggesting Patrick stays in Sydney to advance his cricket. I have to side with Taber on this one...NSW have a great record of developing their players. As for the CoE and their recent record, don't get me started.

I'd have to agree with Taber. Especially since Cooley will be running the Centre of Excellence now.
 
It is interesting that people call for him to be rested and nursed through his more progressive years. Yes that is fine but we don't want to seem to precious with him. Let the body develop naturally and lets see if he can keep his action at what it is with a few minor adjustments.

An example of this is Jimmy Anderson who had an action that his body couldn't handle in his younger years, England managed him well and now look at him. One of the best bowlers in the world who manages himself well and has developed his cricket immensely.

There is no need to rush the good bowlers in at 21-22, expose them develop them and hopefully they will become ten year international bowlers for us.

We need the players to be playing first class cricket for longer periods before they become test players. Ie Chris Woakes (so young but with so much first class experience).

I just feel we rush bowlers into Test and International cricket when they are not ready, especially when there are more seasoned performers with more experience who can still deliver the goods for a number of years too.

Or they need to be picked, instead of picking NSW batsmen who clearly do not have the technique to suceed in international cricket.

I doubt SOK is the difference between our spinning future being bright and it being dim.

On this guy, haven't seen him bowl but good to see another one coming through. We do have some very promising bowlers on the horizon, which we badly need.
