Cumming looks a good prospect to debut. The reason is that the series cannot be won, we have to roll the dice. So what is the diff between losing with out of form bowlers and trying something new. I the problem with Johnson isn't actually with the person but with the instructions he is getting. Johnson is not the kind of bowler that thinks about tactics, strategy, flow of the game, condition of the pitch, because of his earlier success, ACB wants to make him the linchpin of the attack and starts to going into the depth of cricket. Johnson isn't the kind of bowler that thinks about that, the more he thinks, the worse he gets. So if anyone is to be dropped, it should be the person who is in charge of mentoring Johnson. For ffs, just let him bowl. I would rather go with Siddle out cos even when on song, he is not that devastating. Have Harris bowl with strategy, have Watson bowl with a plan and let Johnson and Cummings bowl however they wanted, however they feel like bowling. Motivate Johnson and Cummings to be not only wicket takers but to also hurt opposition bowlers.

The usual selectors rubbish has got us into this mess. He obviously shouldn't be there but now that he is and the media is really going on about him debuting, it really is tempting to see how he'd go.

Sounds like if cummings comes in johnson will indeed be safe, he must be the most over hyped and protected bowler in tests since lee.

Some stats from the last 15 tests they played:

Bollinger(well 12 tests for bollinger) 50 wickets@25

siddle 43 wickets@33

johnson 46 wickets@40

those figures for johnson include his perth 9 for 80 as well, outside of that game he has taken just 37 wickets at 47 in that nearly 2 year period.

Siddle is the first dropped, bollinger can't even get in the squad and johnson is the teams "strike bowler"...

Yes, very stark stats. With the current selection panel guess which player missed out???? Almost predictable..lol! Bollinger's strike rate is 48 ball per wickets compared to 62 for Siddle.

Bollinger's average was actually 23.92 before that last Test he played when obviously unfit taking 1 for a million. Hasn't been forgiven for that in a hurry. some can fail time after time after time after time after time like Johnson and Siddle but if Bollinger fails once, not selected again.

if the new selection panel was in before this tour, he wouldn't have been picked. rodney marsh would have wanted to ease him into his career. that's why i don't think he'll be picked for brisbane

If he has a good Test in J'burg they'd pick him. Think this panel might be more aggressive and be inclined to go with a youngster if he's going well enough.

Be a new panel, maybe more aggressive, they could well wipe the slate almost completely, re-build and play both Cummins and Pattinson in Brisbane, especially against the Kiwis.

Can you imagine what South Africa's run rate might climb to if Cummins plays in the same team as Johnson? They'll target the kid, as they should.

It could get nasty. I'm making the call that if Cummins plays, Copeland has to as well. On that note, Copeland's inclusion was one of our biggest factors in success in Sri Lanka...then we drop him first chance afterwards.

This panel is a joke and I am glad it is their last test. :thumbsd:

hes a NSWelshman and publicly said he wants to play a couple of days ago, so of course he is gonna play. and of course, despite bowling better than johnson for pretty much the last 2 years, siddle is the first one dropped. the current selectors are a joke and they cant leave soon enough.

apparently johnson stays because clarke reckons 'he offers a point of difference'....its a pity the point of difference is that he is a lefty and not that he isnt shit....

and what happened to copeland who has alreayd made his test debut and did fairly well. or guys like pattinson who are at least playing for their state.

we are going to get destroyed.

Cummins is quick and moves the ball. I would pick him, but not if Johnson is in the team. I would not let Johnson on the same oval as the next generation of fast bowler.
I'd have both Cummins and Starc in the team. Frankly I am not sure who the third bowler would be. Siddle is honest, but aweful. House is weak.
When was the last time we debuted three fast bowlers in the same test? Cummins, Starc and Cutting could work.

Starc isn't even in NSW's best FC team, let alone Australia's.

Yes he is, he is awesome. And bowlers dont need to spend time in first class cricket if they are clearly good enough. McGrath is an example of a guy who clearly had it so to hell with first class.
Starc is already obviously considerably better than Johnson.

If he is so awesome how come his first class average is still over 30? After about 16 games?

Yeah, no. He's not. He's talented, and he's a good 50 over bowler, he could maybe even make the Australian ODI side on a regular basis soonish, but he is nowhere near ready for Test cricket.

To me, if Cummins comes in, as he will, then so does Copeland too as cover just in case we need someone to keep it very tight. The other two won't.

i just want to know why he's ahead of pattinson, who has a much better record in the shield (28 wickets @ 27 in 8 games vs 9 @ 46 in 3) hell, why isn't bollinger in the picture? his test record is excellent.
