I think you guys have scored the pick of the bunch from last year. The kid is an amazing ruckman and can dominate games. Do you think he'll play in the ruck or more as a forward. In my opinion, i think his best games are in the ruck, despite his height.

I guess time will tell.

The playing group are also very impressed with him.

The word is he'll play every game in the 1's. Maybe only 5-10 mins a qtr.

I'd be happy with that. He was rated at #1 in the draft by our staff, I think it would be a good idea to have him in the 1's without rushing him too much by playing 30-40 mins a game instead of 80-90% of the match

He is a natural ruckman, he will play prodominantly there throughout his career, even if he doesn't this season. I think he will play 10 games this year, which would be plenty IMO, enough for a taste of senior footy, withour rushing him into it.

I don't think his height will worry him, he is still 17, plenty of time to grow. Will end up 198-200 IMO.

Saw the first half of the intra-club match today.

Ryder looks promising, but very raw (I think he's only just turned 18?). Don't think he'll get too much time in the ones, probably a game here and there like Monfries last year. From what I've seen, I'd prefer Laycock or Cartlege to be doing ruckwork.

just didn't get involved today apart from some good tackles, out-run and rucked by Hille and then super quiet up forward.

I too saw only the first half. Lucas, Hird, Bolton, McVeigh, Campo and even Henneman impressed.

Heffernan was poor. Played on the wing, couldn't get a kick, dropped a sitter, just moped around for 30 minutes...like he did at Melbourne.

The little Japanese kid looked ok. He's got pace, took a mark, kicked a goal from 40 meters, but happened to be playing on his Japanese mate, so the contest cancelled each other out.

There is no doubting Ryders ability to jump and get his hand on the ball at the centre bounce. He was comfortably beating all comers in that area. Needs to work on his around the ground work as Hille got away from him several times but all in all the signs are good.

And for our Melbourne friend he will probably not be pleased to know Heff recovered from his slow start to get a few kicks in the second and third quarters ;)

Laycock yes, I dont know about Cartledge though yet.

Has shown hardly anything yet.

You didnt see any of last seasons VFL games? Cartledge was pretty good for most of the year.

In the (very) short periods of time Cartledge spent on the ground in the one's last year, I thought he showed better tapwork than Hille.

Which isn't particularly hard. Got to say, I was dissapointed Hille didn't dominate the ruck more. Like normal, he was terrific around the ground. But going up against an 18 yr old in the ruck, I'd hope he'd be hand feeding his runners. Didn't get close to doing that.

Really really hoping Carts and Laycock can develop as tap ruckmen, as we really need one.

surely you dont believe that.

he's averaged just 5 hit outs a game and is arguably in the coaches mind still behind henneman in the ruck order (in the seniors side) at the club and now I'd say on par or behind Kepler.

when Sheeds said "He is our biggest ever".. i think he meant homesick wise...

The kids is finding it difficult to settle in...

So did micheal long , Gavin wanganeen, Darren bewick, Dean rioli etc.....The kid will settle in eventually. He's still only seventeen and has moved away from his family and friends for the first time so homesickness was always going to be an issue early on.

Homesickness was always going to be an issue with Ryder and was a MAJOR reason why Ryder was overlooked by Carlton, Collingwood and Hawthorn. Does anyone remember Stephen Michael play in the 80s? a friend of mine from Perth likens Ryder to him which is a huge and admittedly premature rap on him

I guess the hype on Ryder and Dempsey can die down a bit now. Both will get better with experience but they still have a bit to do.

for the next 2 years

mitch clark > Ryder

Ryder almost looked scared in the ruck contests but he does look to have a fair amount of athletic ability.

it took about 3-4 years before Mark Seaby was able to break even in the Ruck and is only now starting to match Dean cox in the contests and beating him around the ground

Big men take much longer to properly develop
