Patrick Ryder vs Lance Franklin

Concentration on sandwiching Buddy didn't work for Rodney's Dogs. Not the way to go.

Turn around and before you know it Buddy has six majors on the board.

he was pretty quiet for 20 minutes after they switches harris onto him for a roughup - was using half of his energy trying to shove back. got a free kick at the end of the quarter that started to rebuild his momentum again.

sheedy has to be willing to think laterally, because it's fairly obvious that essendon doesn't have a player that is able to perfectly match him in all facets of his game. the question then becomes what is the ideal blend to limit his influence.

Lucas on Franklin! :D

Lets answer these questions and see which coach will have more headached this week:

1. Who plays on Lloyd
2. Who plays on Lucas
3. Who playes on Johns
4. Who plays on Monfires
5. Who plays on Laycock/Hille
6. Who plays on Davey

I'll say right now, Buddy can have 6 and I'm still confident - his opponent will have 20 possy's....

Croad on Lucas, Gilham on Lloyd, Murphy on Johns, Brown on Monfries, Osborne on Davey. Jacobs playing loose.

You guys are definately going to stretch us but our backline has been the main reason we've improved this year. They are still no name players but we're doing very well back there.

We'll have to win the midfield well and get the ball to Buddy as much as possible. If we can do that we're a good chance. If we don't win the middle or even break even we'll lose the game.

Someone tell Sheeds - Isolate Johns NOW !!!!!

I am very confident about this game after the nine day break, a couple of runners back into the team....looking forward to it!

Fletcher to take Buddy without Williams in the side, as i think Ryder is too slow off the mark. Fletcher has 10+ years experience at FB so this would neutralize Franklin's pace. Although I might be proven wrong and Ryder does a good job...

Mal could be played as a loose man in defense, jumping in for the spoil or cuting off the Hawk's leads. We should take advantage of the Hawks backline and the absence of Willo.

Go Bombers!

since williams is out for 6 i think the match ups will be as follows

fletcher or michael on franklin
the other on dixon and ryder on boyle

Ryder certainly isn't slow off the mark and I'd put my money on him to beat Fletch.

As for who takes Franklin, it depends where he plays. If Lance plays close to goal, Dustin will more than likely get the role. If he plays the romaing half-forward role, I'd expect Ryder to go to him. I expect Mal to take Boyle as he's hardly quick unless they choose to play Roughead forward and Mal would almost certainly take him and Fletch would go to Boyle.

Yup good idea, Ignore Lucas and Lloyd and pump it to C JOHNS.... I think the hawks would be pretty happy with that....

You're right - Essendon hasn't relied on any one forward (one of the strengths this year). You still have to be wary of John's, as he's doing all the right things: crunching packs, making strong leads, has a good set of hands, kicks straight, and tackles hard. Loves a contest. He's still inexperienced (15 games), but I think he'll kick a bag sooner or later.

Depends on structure once again. If Boyle, Roughead and Franklin all play forward, I would expect one of them to play a fair way up the ground, which in turn means McPhee is able to play on them and such releases one of Ryder, Michael or Fletcher to take Dixon. One would think that it would be Franklin played up the ground, so I would think Fletcher would take Dixon, Ryder would take Boyle and Michael would take Roughead.

If Roughead plays back, that means again that one of Fletcher, Ryder and Michael is available to take him. In this scenario, I would think Fletcher would take Franklin, Ryder would take Dixon and Michael would atke Boyle.

hahaha, hahaha, hahaha, ha. Johns will lift Birchall up, place him gently on his arse, turn around and calmly take a mark. I'd love to see that match up. Johns could even beat Fanning's 18 goals in a game with that match up.

Birchall will run off him to much though, i reckon thats a 50/50 win

i'm so confused as to how people have come to rate johns as a top line AFL goalkicker... there's been so little evidence!

Very few are rating Johns as a top line AFL goalkicker. Backing a guy to kick more than 18 goals in a season is not rating him as a top line AFL goalkicker.

People see the potential of Johns. There's not a whole lot of guys that are that big with that amount of pace that can kick, lead and mark. As experience, confidence and fitness grows, Johns could be a very good full-forward. They guy's played 15 games in just over 2 seasons and kicked 14 goals. He's only getting started and at this stage of a career, doing anything is a bonus.

no1 said his a top line afl goalkicker, however we do say he has the potential to be one. and why do we think this? well for example he has kicked 11 goals in 2 VFL games this year including a 7 straight haul.. i bet you you havent really seen a game from johns youve just been looking at the stats. see idont know why he does it but sheedy only plays johns for like half of games. johns spends a lot of time on the bench... perhaps sheedy is worried about another injury to him and is still easing him into the AFL.. but if you have been watching johns closely you will see how much potential he has which would justify our excitement in the bloke

stop talking sh1t! johns has done nothing, nothing at all this year, dont start with VFL form, he should dominate VFL football, everybody said when he takes the 3 rd best defender he will start playing well, he didnt stand up last week when we needed him always falling over, birchall will probably cut johns up he folds like paper under any real pressure.

yep, roughead for us generally kicks bags when he's back in the VFL, but he's definitely yet to earn his stripes in the seniors.

the only thing that deserves AFL respect is AFL performance. the fact that johns looks and moves like a top footballer doesn't mean he can be considered one.

on that same note, scott lucas is under-respected in the AFL. his career numbers speak for themselves... he's done massive amounts without hype or fuss, and deserves more recognition.
