In amongst all the terrible decision making and disposal, last night Paul Bower really stood out to me and was a shining light.

I never thought I'd be hoping for the ball to be in Paul Bower's hands running off half back and through the middle. His disposal was brilliant. From the looping overpass handballs that hit the chest and that allowed players to keep on running, to spotting out of players and finding them at any distance, and to finding space for himself and continually hitting the target each and every time.

This boy's growth this year has been phenomenal. I was very skeptic of him early in his career, however he has proven that he will be a very good player for us for a very long time.

Hopefully the rest of the younger players can follow his lead. If they do I know we will be going places in years to come.

Well done Paul Bower.

Agree... at least bower and jamison know where their opponents are and play from that starting point and on most occassions break even, Waite left Brown on his own most of the night and even when he attacked the ball should of been more concerned about stopping his direct opponent which is what defending is all about.

Well done to Bower and also Jamison for shuttng down their direct opponents.

Bower has been our most improved player this year by a long long way. I reckon he will play alot of games in the Carlton defence and will be a real good player back there. Just so pleasing to see him play like we all thought he copuld when he was drafted.

Waite was taken off Brown and O'hAilpin played on him directly. Waite was used as a loose man in defence in front of Brown for most of the remainder of the game.

Couldn't agree more. Thought he was the one to turn the tide back in our favour Vs WCE a couple of weeks back. Our running had completely stalled then Bower got hold of the footy and took them on. It set up a goal and we were on our way again.

Self confidence is key to becoming a great player at this level and Paul lacks none of it.

Yeah thats right Waite was taken off him after he left Brown unattended for 3 first quarter goals, game over... probably poor choice of words by me stating most of the night when i should of said most of the 1st quarter when the game was won and lost.

It staggers me that commentators who are earning hundreds of thousands of dollars to be experts on the game don't know about emerging players.

Last night on 10, prematch they were discussing Carlton saying how we have Waite and Jamison to play on the talls but we really lack that 3rd tall defender....even though Jamison plays regularly on smaller players eg Medhurst

Bower!!!!!! ffs! not to mention Thornton to come back in

Which is why Setanta should have been played on Brown from scratch.

There was one notable mistake from Bower in the last quarter, he had the ball, running to around 55m's at Fev was on a beautiful lead, metres in the clear and Bower just bombed away at goal, he didn't even look for a lead and Fev was running right at him.

Rightly so Fev sprayed him for the next few minutes.

I would have much preferred to have seen Bower hit Fev lace up.

Hang Him.... Yeah maybe Fev should of got the pass but it was great to see a defender run and back himself in and has probably earn't the right to have a shot with his performances throughout the season so far.

Imagine if that was Carazzo, stop, slow down, look sideways, handball to a stationary target, get it back, grubber it along the ground to Fev or get run down holding the ball.

i hope Bower continues exactly like he is.

Fev should not be spraying anyone  I hope Ratts plays his pedantic little rant to the team during the week .and carptet him for his poor behaviour ..Fev you are not bigger than the team .

Would have to say on form thus far , he is our most important defender at the moment. Not bad for a 19 year kid. Before supporters go pushing Jamieson's case, wthey should be reminded that he does more than adefend an opponent.

He is our most effective defensive rebounder and generates attck out of defence better than any one of the players. Getting tired of the pathetic chipping to the side stuff that we tend to do. He is prepared to run the lines and take on players in an attempt to open up some space in the middle. Yes he does not always pull it off but if the rest of our defenders were prepared to do likewise, our forward line would not be as crowded when the ball gets there. Our youngsters should have him as their role model in terms of self development.

Interesting that Gibbs said Fev's sprays are more humourous than serious when he re-signed...

Future star. Bower just has that brilliant mix of intensity and poise. It was obvious from day 1. :)

Haha, not even i would say he had poise from day one. But he definitely has got the goods now.

Love your work though parrot :thumbsu:

I, like a few others on here, were fans of him from day one. I was very pleased with his first two games in 06 - particularly the second against the Swans, where he did a good job on Hall in only his second game. His 06 wasn't great, but people expect to much of young kids entering the game. He had the tools, but clearly he wasn't there yet mentally, and was still adjusting to the huge step up to AFL footy. His 08 season thus far has been superb, though, and he's converted all his critics. :thumbsu:

Emu terrifies us all because he works without a net. His style of play is risky at times and it will backfire every now and then. Shit happens. He has the makings of a star. Love the Startled Emu.

Perhaps the best thing to come out of the season thus far for us. Have to agree he is becoming one of our most dependable players. Just seems to be gaining a level of confidence that is producing solidity in a team sadly lacking in this area.

do you guys feel that having fev up forward demanding the ball every time could be bad for the teams development? there were a few times in the game where fev would make a lead and was ignored coz the player had a shot a goal. i know fev is our only option up forward, so he probably feels as though he needs to kick 6+ goals a game to get the team over the line. however, i feel as though fevs body language when his leads are being ignored could be a negative to the players development as they feel as though they need to kick it to fev whenever they are going forward. most premiership teams have players which back themselves to have a running shot at goal from 50 out, and it was good to see a few player back themselves and have a shot instead of feeling that they need to give the ball to fev. anyway, as times passes we will get another strong forward, and maybe fev wont be as annoyed when his leads aren't honored.
