2011 Season Review: Paul Seedsman

12 VFL Games
8 Goals (Game High: 3 Goals)
Named In Best 4 Times (B.O.G. 2 Times)

The slight bodied Seedsman was a draft selection that seemingly came out of nowhere in 2010, with Derek Hine up to his unpredictable best with our late selections. Given his size, expectations were put on hold for Seedsman in his debut year, with most Magpie fans prepared to give him at least a year or so to build some size before sliding him under the microscope.

Moderate expectations or not, Seedsman warmed into the season to become a noteworthy contributor for our VFL side. A little wayward by foot in his first few games, Seedsman found his rhythm in the final half of the season to accumulate respectable disposal numbers and win best on ground honours on two occasions.

Seedsman eventually finished the year averaging just over 17 disposals and a pleasing 4.5 tackles per game. He saved his best for last in what was very nearly a match winning performance against Sandringham in the last round, kicking three goals and setting up several others as he and Josh Thomas combined throughout the midfield.

It is Seedsman’s versatility that will improve his chances of senior selection in 2012. Standing at 189cm, he competes well in the air and at ground level, whilst also possessing decent pace along with the confidence to take the game on. He doesn’t have blistering speed, but covers the ground exceptionally well and knows when and where to run in order to get involved.

The gradual improvement of Seedsman as the year wore on played a big part in our VFL squad becoming more competitive. As he upped his numbers, our ball movement became less stagnant and we were able to manufacture more scoring opportunities. It was the hard running, side stepping and shimmying of Seedsman that played a big hand in breaking things open for us.

A player who works just as hard without the ball as he does with it, Seedsman’s chasing and tackling is more than solid, especially considering he was punching above his weight class in many instances. Whilst I wouldn’t rank Seedsman amongst the mercurial types floating about, he is nonetheless a creative player who is a solid finisher from set shots or when having to improvise in general play.

Both the club and Seedsman would be content in the wake of his first season at the Westpac Centre. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Seedsman earn senior selection this year; he’s a player who could perform a variety of roles and could start as a sub and be used to inject some run at the latter stages of the game.

Looking forward to seeing this kid make his mark at senior level. Showed plenty in the VFL games I saw in 2011.
