2nds Peel Thunder 2024 Season

People don't understand that at AFL level it's about the role you play.

Erasmus is on ball or bust. Him getting BOG at peel means absoloutly nothing for a wing role. His skills aren't good enough at AFL level to play on the wing. We are yet to see if they are even good enough to play on the inside. When he has been given his few chances at AFL level he has been far worse than Omeara, and that is terrible.

The worst part about the people so desperate for Erasmus in, is most of them probably didn't even watch his game, just judging off stats.

Paddy Dow got BOG every week in the VFL and got deslisted by Carlton despite being a high draft pick. Plenty of WAFL insode mids have won the association best and fairest but have never even been close to getting drafted.

Slowish inside mids with poor kicking ability need to be special to get a game in a side that's contending. Jaeger is lucky to be getting a gig for sure, but at the end of the day he has a better kick than Erasmus. Johnsons pace and skills are much better suited to the wing than Erasmus, and even he has struggled this season out there.

Guys like Tom Mitchell and Wines were good enough to win brownlows when given their role full time, but the game has even gone past them despite them both being prime age (yes I know titch still gets a gig but he is subbed out or rested regularly despite how good he has proven to be).

It sucks but we simply have to bide our time with Erasmus until he pushes Fyfe out. If he forces a trade to another club in the mean time it's is what it is.

Erasmus played wing v Sydney away last year and had his best game. He could only get better if given the opportunity. I simply don't believe it's purely inside mid or bust

I think our midfield lacks pace, so it makes it hard to include him as well. People want him to bulk up. I want him to get some of his pace back.
He has never had elite speed. He has elite endurance. He showed that well on the weekend. Great spread and run to space to be a link up player. So he is a point of difference to Fyfe and Brodie who both aren’t particularly great in terms of endurance. Brodie in particular, has very poor endurance.

He endurance is better than Matthew Johnson. He isn’t as good in confined spaces like MJ, who at times reminds me of Mundy being able to find time and space and shrug off tackles. MJ fits in better currently with the current midfield set-up.

Erasmus has really improved his disposal around the ground including i50. His game on Sat was a step forward for mine.

He still needs to improve his speed on decision making, both in terms of flicking out the quick handball and also when marking at half back or centre midfield and playing on more quickly.

That was also a step forward on the weekend.

The last piece in the puzzle is now to nail some goals. Kicked 1-4 last week and 0-1 this week. He took a good mark i50 but missed the 30metre set shot.

I think he could be an option for half forward mixed with some stints in the midfield. They would want him to be a bit more dangerous in the front half so he needs to nail these goals.

He isn't quick but he had more pace as a junior. He is probably a long way from getting an inside mid gig so they should shape his body for a role we need him for. Endurance would be very useful for the wing. Running up and down the wing to help back and run forward. Similar to Sharp. I don't think Johnson is particularly good on the wing despite all the opportunities he has been given. I think Erasmus could play wing and dropping a bit of bulk and running a bit lighter over the ground would help that.

So he has to keep proving himself while others play poorly at afl level
Im just a dude on a phone but it can’t be good to keep coming in and out of the team. I don’t really see him contributing more than JOM in the same role either tbh and think he’ll get scapegoated pretty quick.

I’d rather he keep the disposal and fast decision making up at Peel until even naysayers think he should come in

Age profile of the squad. It’s on a knife’s edge and JL errs on the side of conservatism.
Errs in the side of conservatism is one of the understatements of the year.
JL is a lot of things but a risk taker is not one of them

Did play a second gamer as a KPF in an elimination final.

Peel line-up. Interesting Reidy is out after travelling last week with the AFL side, Knobel in. Odin Jones and Conrad Williams in the Peel reserves team.

Didn't realise Jason Carter had moved over to SF.

Probably Erasmus, Voss also play if there's not a late change at AFL. Sturt already named here.

AFL emergencies are omitted, they'll come back in.

sad the way things panned out for Carter, could have still be playing for us and been a handy half-back weapon

Trading Erasmus now would not be worth it as we wouldn’t get near a top 10 for him. So the only option is to play the longer game and develop him as much as possible and hope he comes good.
He could be playing now, every game.
But instead its 'experience' and 'age' that JL wants to protect.

Sorry but his chances are from the sub and barely any full time matches. There's no way that's a suitable or fair argument that he's worse then JOM. Anyone can get 16 disposals and have better impact then JOM, especially a young and upcomer in Erasmus. What are we really losing in getting him in v JOM's role? Is it because of the way OMeara is built v Erasmus as a raw 20 year old?

The assumption you appear to be making is that the role is suited to more involvements? Not everyone in the side can get twenty touches in a game, just purely for the amount of stuffing around it would take.

Erasmus isn't AFL level, he needs to improve decision making, disposal and speed at Peel

Chad warner says he spent all off season working on sprint work after the game last night, get ras to do that

Johnson was preferred over Erasmus but he also needs to improve his decision-making ,and disposal. He has a bit more pace, lucky for him. Seems we only want to be developing one of them at Afl level at a time.

“Players have the ball in their hands for between 30 seconds and four minutes a game,” Longmuir said.
“The rest of the time they’re either providing options in offence, defending or at a stoppage. So I’d rather our players focus on things they can control (contest and team defence).
“We develop players holistically. So mental side of the game, physical side of the game and craft side of the game as far as your football goes,” he said.
“Historically you’ve put a lot of time into physical, a ton of time into craft and the mental side of the game, which is actually more critical than the other two, we forget about.
“So we put a lot time into all of those three things as well as the outer ring, which is what players are doing outside of footy and their leadership and all those sorts of things.
“A young player comes into the team and hasn’t touched the ball halfway through the first quarter – half the time they’re not thinking about the game.

“Half the time they’re thinking if I don’t touch it I’ll get subbed or dropped next week or what’s the coach going to say.
“So how can you deal with those moments? Because the team needs you in those moments because the team needs you in those moments.
“If we haven’t got 18 guys on the field executing their roles the system falls apart. So that’s not craft, that’s not physical – that’s mental.
“It’s hard. We’ve got to make sure as a coaching group we’re valuing the right things as well, and I say all the time I don’t even look at how many kicks, marks, handballs you had.
“I’m looking at the game behind the goals. Are you doing what the team needs in that moment?
“And are you executing when you get the ball? It’s not about how many times you get it, it’s are you doing what the team needs when you get the ball.
“I find it interesting how people can analyse the game without watching behind the goals vision of every team.
“Because you only get a certain view of it looking at it side-on.”
Extract from a long piece on Longmuir posted in another thread. Speaks to the question of JOM v Erasmus (or anyone else).

I'll respectfully disagree with everything you said about Erasmus. Watching him at Peel this season I think his speed and decision making are much improved. His speed over 100 metres is elite and we need more of that type of player in our side.

He has a long.way to go but his previous few games has shown he is worth getting afl games into.

Why are we playing c grade players instead of him?

On a similar note geezI hope Wagner does well tonight. Our weakness is clearly the last couple of players selected each week. If Wagner can hold his spot we'd have another good ball user in the team. On a similar note Iveread online both us and West Coast are interested in East Freo's Milan Murdochin the MSD who I would describe as a good user of the football from what Ive seen. He could be a handy pick up.

Wagner has been very composed with ball in hand and a terrific rebounder which could free up Clarke if he is being tagged.

The only knock on Wagner is his strength in the tackle.

Reckon Wags is odds on to be sub.
