George Pell has been taken to jail after Australia's most senior Catholic was classified as a serious sex offender to be sentenced within the next two weeks.
Pell was taken into custody following a pre-sentence hearing on Wednesday after his lawyers withdrew a last ditch effort to appeal for bail in the Court of Appeal this afternoon.
County Court Chief Judge Peter Kidd said Pell's crimes were "callous, brazen offending" and indicated it would not be a lenient sentence.

Defence barrister Robert Richter QC conceded there should be jail time but argued "this is a court of law not a court of morals," as he revealed former Prime Minister John Howard was one of ten people to provide a character witness.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison indicated he would look at stripping Pell's Order of Australia but only if an appeal is not successful.

But didn’t Bruce say that the judge was shocked by the verdict and left his desk..clearly that’s a sign of the wrong verdict

Doesn’t sound like he’s too impressed with Pell and co

Lets see Bruce squirm his way past this one

Look it's unusual. That's all.

My sense was at the time he was surprised at the verdict.

In the lift afterwards, a certain Channel 7 reporter said "Did you see Kidd? He went white." Another replied "You don't often see them needing to leave the bench."

There was little disagreement on that day that the verdict was unexpected.

And I didn't state it as a fact. It was an impression formed by me on the day. An impression shared by others.

There's nothing to squirm out of.

My agenda is not to see people ruined by what I see as mob rule.

I see many who are merely misled by headlines.

I see others who are so anti-Catholic it is frightening.

He admits he knew it was going on in the 70s, let alone this latest outrage.

He should be ruined for that alone.

Most people were surprised Pell got off not because they though the kid was making it up, but because Pell is so powerful, had so many powerful supporters, that people just assumed he'd get away with it.

Western society is deeply cynical at the moment, about established power ever being held to account.
