Nah, the Court of Appeal getting all wig and gown and letting him go on a technicality - with all the posturing and shouting from Bolt and co that would entail - would be the worst outcome.

Pell doesn't care about much except his legacy. Knowing he'd die a convicted sex offender would be hell to him.
He will get off because the Jury's verdict is unreasonable and cannot be supported by the evidence in my humble opinion, hopefully that's not the case. If that's the case it's hardly a technically. Pell to the little I know about him would not find dying in jail in hell, he will arogantly consider himself a martyr. His whole religious life he has been for fighting the worldly evil with his view of God's orthodoxy. He can't apologize understand or accept gays, he can't deal with 1000s of pedos because they are secondary, because his one mission is to uphold the church and God's will.

The judges who overturn the jury's verdict on those grounds will be mightily unpopular.

No doubt not that I have stats but certainly it is not uncommon in sexual assualt cases

If Pell had been represented by legal aid, it might be a chance, with the level of legal team he had, nah.

Ummmm, yes there is, there'll be a chance in a few months.

Unfortunately, all the same secret handshakes will still be there. The same photographs are still inside the same brown envelopes. The same watchdogs who are “oblivious” to the blatant immoral and criminal activity will still be in charge of trying to find it. The same media conglomerate will continue to divert attention from it. The same corrupt pipelines will still be open.

A Royal Commission will shed light on where these pipelines are and who they feed.

IMO, a Royal Commission is the only thing worth voting for.

Do we even know all the evidence? Has it been presented in the media in its entirety? If not, then its a bit hard to call the verdict unreasonable. I haven't actually followed the case too closely due to not seeing a lot of evidence, but I suspect there actually is evidence if he was convicted. Maybe it will come out now that he has been sentenced.

That's your defence of the church?

Pedophilia happens in families?

No the NeoTrads who love Pell and pray that Pope Francis dies blame secularism and homosexuality - Clericalism must die

I was responding to a question directed at me. The question came from someone who harbours similar, though perhaps not as extreme doubts as I. In responding I anticipated what his next question might be so I covered it.

Go down to Albert St East Melbourne on Sunday morning. It’s a long weekend so it will be relatively quiet. Watch the comings and goings immediately after Mass. you might then get some idea.

Remember the overwhelming mob hate directed at Adam Goodes a year or so ago? I think then we were on the same side. Fighting the mob. Now you’re part of the mob.

If the SCA throws this out on appeal will you stand down? Because they’re going to. It’s a horrible verdict. On the evidence before the jury and on the circumstances as I know them.

Or will you cry about the jury not being respected?

Oh Dear - so much for the Rule of Law. The jury is out and he literally had the best defence lawyers money can buy. Did you read Kidd’s directions for the jury - could not have been fairer.

What David Marr says is correct. What you are really saying is the victim/witness is a fraud.

Can you just cool your jets until the Court of Appeal hears it.

George Weigal is saying Pell is Alfred Dreyfus - does it not unsettle you that all the Dogma worshipping red slipper wearing Vatican II hating types all support Pell without having been in the Court

It sounded like the judge put a lot of weight on the idea that because he's old and because of who he is, a year in prison for him is a significantly bigger punishment than it would be for an ordinary offender. All things considered, 6 years is about right from a legal perspective which is the only perspective the judge should have. From another perspective you might argue that his offending ultimately cost the life of one of his victims, and he's spent much the last two decades since the offending covering up the offenses of others. On that reading you'd probably want to lock him up and throw away the key. Doesn't mean the judge got it wrong - just that he could only consider what he could consider.

On one side of the Pell verdict there are two former Australian PMs and a news conglomerate calling this a witch hunt against the former third highest Catholic in the entire Universe, on the other side of the verdict there are two former Australian PMs and a news conglomerate coming out to defend a convicted paedophile who was also once the third highest Catholic in the entire Universe.

Both sides of the argument should be deeply and suspiciously concerned about an abuse of power. Royal Commision the shit out of it!

*Outdid myself... I quoted myself twice - that’s got to be a Bigfooty record?

Morally indeed. In respect to sentencing and Pell's circumstances probably not, most he could have got was about ten years he got 6.

To compare manslaughter doesn't really go above 8 years, sexual assualt 3 and sexual assaults on U 16 yo about 6 or 7 years

I agree with respect of comparing to other crimes.

I do think someones status should also be a consideration. George Pell was a figure that had a lot of trust from the community and he let everyone down in the worst way.

Just here to gloat!
Cause gloating and schadenfreude is fun!

It's lefty Victoria sentencing is very soft. He more or less got 6 out of a possible 10 years

It's the lefts fault, blah-blah-blah.

While I agree that for Pell it's 3 years and 8 months but a lifetime for his victims the judge has a duty to remove emotion and judge on the facts of this case.

Kindly tell us where Justice Kidd erred in the application of the rule of law which is what he is required to do?

https://content.countycourt.vic.gov.../2019-03/dpp-v-pell-sentence-2019-vcc-260.pdf

For those who still maintain the process was unfair to Pell. "J" had to go through interrogation by Victoria Police before the matter was sent to the DPP. Then thorough interrogation by DPP to ensure his evidence would stack-up. More interrogation during the committal hearing. And four days of interrogation during the trial.

It was a no expenses spared exercise by the Catholic Church. Not only the two silks and a bevy of lawyers assisting but they had a team of people sifting through all the possibilities with the view to casting sufficient doubt in the minds of the jury in order to get a not guilty verdict. They failed.

Should the appeal fail, Pell will serve his sentence, be a registered sex offender with all that goes with that, be regarded as a pariah, quite possibly be excommunicated, and is yet to face at least one civil action. Probably more.

Whatever Pell's sentence it was never going to be commensurate with the lifetime of suffering his victim faces. For "J" to put himself through so much, some say with his friend "R" at the forefront of his mind, is amazing. What a man!
