Crazy.

Crossing the bridge thos morning, I noticed people camping out along the harbour waiting for tonights fireworks display.

Whats the fascination with things that go bang and dont do much besides pollute the atmosphere? The money used for these displays could be used for better purposes.

 :o

I prefer to use matches instead of lighters to spark up my ciggies. Theres just something about that smell of a burning match. Lovely.

But i prefer milk chocolate over white chocolate. I dont care too much for dark chocolate though.

Seen one fireworks show, seen 'em all.

Ahh you would know what i mean living in Sydney. What about last years effort while fires burned on Sydneys out skirts.

I am not following my tail, its just that i want to reply to some threads cos its boring here!!

I agree - seen one you've seen 'em all. I used to live near Flemington Racecource, from our upper level balcony we could see fireworks for just about every occasion - Melbourne Show, Spring Racing, Big Day Outs, Oktoberfests, you name it. Its noisy, drives your dogs crazy, and to be honest, you can only look at pretty little flashing lights in the sky for so long before you get bored fruity.

My old next door neighbours were on their balcony going, "Oh my god, fireworks, oh wow, look, look!!"... pathetics.

Thats what sucks. It appeals to the blue rinse set and the baby boomers. They are the only ones who get into it.

I cringe when I see middle aged moms and old people really get into the fireworks. I think to myself "how simple".

:o

Its quite sad really. To think that its an amazing trick, some special effect...

These next door neighbours were in their early twenties, my generation, you would think they would have not been so excited by fireworks?!

I mean, i could make the same effect, only smaller, albeit, with a packet of sparklers from the supermarket!

Whats the big deal!!

anyone know how much they are costing this year?

its pretty sad to be camping out for a night in advance just to be front row for some fireworks. but don't people hire boats in the harbour just to be close as well? you could see the same thing from 100m away couldn't you?

Fireworks are exciting for kids. If you had them you would know what I mean when you look at their faces when they are watching them. That said, I don't believe in wasting millions on them. My kids were always quite happy to watch any local displays which would have been low budget. Camping out to get a good view is crazy.

i must say, i used to LOVE them!! i loved the whole atmosphere it produced... but then, it was as if i had such a high expectation of them, that now - they all suck!

i agree, once you seen one, ya seen 'em all!

Aw, don't be a party pooper, BluesBabe. :p

There is something elemental and festive about fireworks that appeals to everyone (except the jaded tastes of the twenty-somethings, obviously  ;) )

You can imagine the amazement and fear caused by the pyrotechnics used by the Chinese 1500 years ago to frighten their enemies. Even now there is a bit of superstition surrounding a fireworks display, as if the explosions and bright lights are meant to ward off evil.

As public entertainment, fireworks sure do beat car chases and tv bloopers. It's innocent and clean fun, for a change. Don't you think we deserve a bit of light-heartedness and frivolity to round off a pretty harrowing year?

Camping out for a spot though, seems a bit much, but why not? That can be part of the fun too.

It annoys me when people say the money could be better spent elsewhere. Like, where? And how would you know where it was being spent? "Er - we were going to spend $1mill on fireworks to give you good people a spectacular night of entertainment, but we've decided to spend it on the Quit Smoking campaign instead..." I don't think so!

Fireworks are fun for kids. I'll give you that, but we don't need the multi-million $ extravaganzas to please them.

When I was young we had neighbourhood bonfires and cracker nights - not too fancy but heaps of fun (and if a kid or two lost a hand or eye, well that's life - made a man of 'em)

The argument that its a waste of money doesn't really wash - money can't be wasted. Of the money paid to the fireworks companies, a large portion goes back to the Fed govt as tax, while a lot of the rest is spent with the various manufacturers etc - it goes back into the economy.

I used to work with a girl who was married into the Foti family, one of the two big fireworks companies (the Howards are the others). It was amazing the amount of technology that goes into these big shows - but I still think they are a ****.

I like fireworks and they look spectacular, but putting them on during that bushfire crisis was in very bad taste and most offensive.

My dad was good friends with Vince Fotti when I was growing up.

makes me think if kids wouldn't be even more scared of them with whats going on around the world. Confuse a young mind.

I don't think they are needed to bring the new year in. And I still stand that the money could be used more efficiently for NYE. Maybe free public transport all night?

There you go, hey. The girl at works name was Carmel, I can't remember he hubby's name.

And I still think fireworks are fun for kids - but I was talking about the small shows like we had when I was a kid, not the Armageddon previews that are put on these days.

I used to love the roman candles and ball shooters - still got the burn scars from being hit by one. And the old throwdowns were a bit of fun.

(Sorry youngsters, Grandpa is getting all nostalgic about things back in the good old days)

ahhh growing up in the late 70's early 80's in Sydney was fun. Firecracker night was awesome. Used to buy a big bag of crackers from the newsagent for like 5 bucks and it was an assortment of fun.

Throwdowns where fun as well. 20 cents for a packet of 6. CrazyJacks even more fun.

The fun ended in 1985. :(

By that stage I used to grab a few crackers from Mr Fottis shed. Bangers. ;) shhh

But anyway kids love em but I did prefer it when I was the one lighting the crackers.

:)

We used to have a guy at school whose Dad lived in Canberra. They were still legal there so he used to do the trip down and bring back big bags of fireworks to push at school.

(Not long afterwards he started doing similar runs to Fyshwick [sp?] to bring back other things to flog [bad choice of word?])

oh get a life ! If people like them then good on them, there are always bitter people who have a whinge about minor things like this. Some like them, some dont. Your entitled to your opinion but dont say negative things about those that do like them, acting as if your opinion is right.
