Permission to Train

In 1999, while working as a commentator in South Africa, Roebuck met three cricketers, all aged 19, and offered to coach them, inviting them to live at his home in England. He warned them beforehand that he would use corporal punishment if they failed to obey his "house rules". He caned all three men on their bare buttocks at different times for misbehaviour and in 2001 was given a suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to three charges of common assault. He told the court, "Obviously I misjudged the mood and that was my mistake and my responsibility and I accept that." Henk Lindeque, one of Mr Roebuck’s victims, said, "I haven’t had any contact with him since the trial. The problem was not so much that he caned us but wanted to examine the marks. That’s when I decided to get out of his house."

Question: Is there any unwritten understanding that if a player trains with a particular club, then that club has first bite at him?

Not so sure on that. .. Curnow was training with the Hawks last season ;)

And took Garlett when training at Hawthorn.

This why it's smart not to give "Permission to Train" to those players on your short-list. I have no doubt we've already identified several players who we want, but we're not going to make that public otherwise others will take advantage of the ground work our recruiters have put in.

:)

Brisbane also took McGuire after he left the Saints when he was training with us as well IIRC.

I for one am happy to give Heyne a 2nd chance at the top level and he will come cheap with a big upside about him.

In that photo of him in an early post in this thread he looks to have extremely long arms on him!

Interesting that Heyne visited Carlton as a junior. Perhaps we were impressed with him back then. Regardless of what happens, it's a pretty big achievement to be the only player invited to train at Carlton. I'm sure we had plenty of requests, and being the only one will certainly put him on other Clubs radar's as well. So he has a good chance of being picked up by someone.

:)

Wouldn't be adverse to getting Heyne down to the club. Could fill a need as that goalkicking HF that we are missing. Like parrot said, with Hoops retiring and Kerr/Collins not having made that position their own, he could have some impact at Visy Park. I did see a bit of him when he was playing U18 footy, and as Splendini said, he did run hot and cold. But a highly skilled player nonetheless.

It's a yes from me.

I wouldnt be to adverse to seeing him picked up in the rookie draft... he will provide competition for Collins/Kerr and push them to improve.

And he will also provide some cover for 1AW over the course of the year I think

Good luck to him. Thought one of his main drawbacks at St Kilda was his lack of pace in a team that wasn't exactly full of toe.

Heyne might actually suit your structure quite well, positioning himself off your faster forwards. Can take a nice grab and can read the play.

The kid has talent. After 3 games in 2010 really needed to press his claim for senior berth and unfortunately just went backwards. Showed late in the year what he could produce, but papers were probably stamped half way thru the year.

I thought he was pretty good in his first 2 games, has a booming left foot on him and can pin point a pass 50m away. Hope you guys, or another club picks him up and he's able to be given a 2nd chance.

Here's a little more info on him:
Sounds like depth for 1AW's spot.

Looking at the videos above, I thought he moved well had extremely good hands, was good in the clearances, but I was concerned that every kick (on the video admittedly) , he seemed to bail out long, bombing it in rather than hitting a target.

Good luck to Cachia. Essendon have the worst midfield in the AFL, so he should be able to get some opportunity there. His highlight at the Blues was that brutal tackle on Nason in the pre-season comp.

:)

187cm 85kg Half Forward?
Seriously don't know why we would rookie spot a player that a club like St Kilda who are in desperate of young blood would delist. This wouldn't be anything to do with Salary Cap pressure as his a rookie. He wouldn't get a gig in our forward line with our forward line that just need a key forward. I hope the club isn't just looking back how he had some talent years back, when they were interested, we know how many times that worked out. People may say it's only a rookie spot, but we only have a couple of spots this year.

not all rookie spots is for spuds.......the point is, our list is fairly advanced, a top 4 list...we can continue to bring in young talent at the pointy end, but come the rookie draft there will be lean pickings this year....chances of plucking a junior with AFL potential is low.....not a bad idea to id some talent that might be closer to contributing at the top level.

Not sure if "Permission to Train" means a lot for us. We've probably already created a decent-sized secret short-list of the talent we're trying to sneak by the non-Carlton clubs. Looking forward to seeing who we pickup with the rookie spot and late selections in particular. Our recruiting effort last year was outstanding.

:)
