First opposition leader to lose his seat? Voted by doctors the worst Health Minister in history, the smouldering wreck he turned Home Affairs into after it was constructed especially for him? After twenty four years in Australian politics there must be something better to say about him than he's vastly improving Canberra by no longer being a part of it.

Tried to create division at every turn (within a nation he allegedly loves), thinking that would benefit his political career. The electorate (Australia and Dickson) had finally seen enough.

And laughing at some of the earliest, and economically-challenged victims of climate change.

Concession speech notwithstanding (too little, far too late), it's a:

"**** off and stay out of our future public discourse, you campaigner"

from me.

He'll occupy a place in many minds similar to Sophie Mirabella and Tony Abbott. A politician of negativity, fear and division who far too frequently attacked a person rather than the issue.

So he made a lot of money investing in child care centres - who we are now seeing are chronically underperforming on compliance and safety. I wonder a) if any of the bad ones were/are owned by him and b) in a universe where he won the election, what would be the narrative?

Disclaimer: not associating him with paedos in any way. Just wondering how this could/would all look.

Although he and those that voted Liberal (I'll refrain from calling them animals) did get a lot of pleasure from hurting children by locking them up in detention centres. Maybe not a paedo, but definitely a serial child abuser.

Dutton represents the 'bridge too far'. Abbott seemed like the biggest buffoon who could ever be foisted on the electorate, then Morrison was even worse, thankfully Dutton (with the assist from Trump) finally tipped the scale to the point where being an unqualified unlikeable a-hole actually woke the people up.

I think he's put the kiss on death by those in the far-right who believe and peddle all that 'silent majority' crap.

There has been a structural realignment of values in Australia in the post-Howard era and the far-right of the LPA are well and truly out of touch.

It cannot be understated that he ran quite possibly the worst political campaign of any of the majors in Australian political history.

Latham and Dutton, have similarities. Labor were leading in the polls up to the campaign of 2004 as the LNP were in 2025. Then the campaign started and the public started paying close attention to both opposition leaders, the rest is history.

Since Latham ended up representing One Nation, is Dutton "the Right's version of Latham" or "the Leftie Latham"?

ALP turned to Latham in desperation. Having inherited Werriwa after Whitlam and Kerin, he appeared to have a similar philosophy, but there should have been alarm bells well before he was elected leader.

As schneebly111 said, like Dutton, once voters saw Latham on the campaign trail, even Howard seemed preferable! His "trajectory" has been a slow slide into obscurity ever since.
