You are not ashamed of how your club has acted and handled all this?

There you go. I was right after all. No contrition.
gosh, that's unlike a god botherer to be telling people how they should feel and act! What a surprise it is seeing you declaring people should feel guilty and ashamed!

I bet everyone starts taking studious notes of how to behave when you start handing it out hey!

I didn't say every fan. But I would also think most EFC fans are ashamed, wouldn't you?

I also sort of agree with the Carlton supporters who consistently point out the differences in how their supporter base acted WRT their SCap stuff. EFC fans could have been far more proactive - even now they seem very reluctant to stand up and condemn the club for its shameful behaviour.

There is no contrition, even from fans. And all the fans I have had contact with will brook no dissent on the ethical failings of the club and players. Some have still not woken up to Hird.

Of course, this is no doubt magnified in my mind and many others, b/c the moral bankruptcy of what went on has been so clear to so many non-EFC people; and they having been trying to tell EFC people about it for four years!
I beseech you CharacterFirst to forgive my fellow supporters for they know not what they do

Be careful. That may come back to haunt you one day. Like 2012.
hahaha!!!!

Holy shit, apart from the sheer stupidity of somehow equating that comment to a systematic club doping program, please please please enlighten me as to how this would work!!! I have to know, because I can't think of a single scenario where him making that comment on BigFooty is ever going to "haunt him"!! Chris could get elected Emperor of the Galaxy in 2016 and no-one would even remember the comment!! Although I'm sure you've bookmarked it so you can come in as the ultimate White Knight hey!! hahahahahahah

I need to get something off my chest... I've been ashamed of my club many times. :(
I know exactly what you mean... I've been ashamed of your club too...:straining:

But seriously, if you care about football, your chance of feeling a range of negative emotions is high.

How do you feel when you meet someone new and they ask you who you barrack for?

While I'm happy to tell people that I barrack for Carlton, and, frankly, am proud of Carlton, there is still a small part of me that does feel shame about the club. We have been arrogant, we behaved arrogantly, we got caught, and as a consequence, we sat in the doldrums (partly due to our own incompetence (more arrogance?)) for more than a decade. Perhaps I feel shame because I expect us to be better... and we're not.

Perhaps that suggests I align my emotional wellbeing too closely with the club. Perhaps I need to care less. But I don't know how I can find football an important part of my life, and not feel some shame for our previous actions.

I feel a bit weird. I don't know what thread I'm on but I'll put it out there anyway. Should I tough it out or go back home like a wimp?

Depending on the context.... if it's health related, don't dick around, go to the Dr. If it's forum amnesia, don't worry about, all threads eventually get back on topic.

I don't think they really think they are innocent AT.
I must admit I'm conflicted. All the evidence points to the fact that they are complicit in the whole affair. I actually like Essendon strangely enough. I have several friends that follow them. They are a proud club with a great history. A part of me (my heart) wishes they were duped/mislead. Alas, my head says otherwise......

why go to a dr when there are sports scientists around the place?

History forgets pretty quickly, the White Sox are still playing nearly 100 years after their scandal, which will always be more famous than any scandal in AFL.

Youve got to be joking. You think a few players accepting some bribes to lose a few matches is worse than a systemic experimental doping regieme where no one knows what was administered nor the health effects??

What is it about Australian culture which downplays this?

Not sure it's a win/win scenario.

Financially EFC would have to question is the cost worth it. They made a loss last year, this year is going to be a scary year financially for them, lots of unknowns at the moment on the revenue side, is membership revenue going to take a hit (both in terms of numbers of members and the make up, e.g more three games less full season tickets), ticket and corporate sales are up in the air. Was going to be a tough year for them due to the draw, last years bottom 4 finish saw them loose a lot of their prime time games, throw in a depleted team on top of this...

The costs won't be covered by legal insurance as they they plaintiff (e.g Hird and his actions against the insurance company) . We know from Chip story on Dank finances he does not have much and the one company is still a director of (the one you suggested he provided he's services through) ASIC has just placed into liquidation, so simply may not be anything to sue to force the case in a court room. His company goes bankrupt he declares himself bankrupt the moment action starts. This again may prevent a court case.

Even if it does get to a court room what to say he will even answer questions? As the defendant can he even be put on the witness stand? Sure him not saying anything probably be inferred against him, but what damages will there be is there any cash to pay EFC or do they have to wear all their legal costs?

There is also the flip side, what if he does provide testimony, TB4 is not the only banned substance he was accused of administering, Hal Hunter is suing to find out what he received, zaharakis (I believe) admitted getting other stuff such as creams just not injections. If Dank testify under oath that he administered Hexeralin or other banned substances to players x,y and z... Where does this put ASADA? Where does it put these players? Statue of limitations has got a long way to go. The recent CAS decision would also make it hard to the get the 12 month backdated no significant fault deal so got the potential to have additional players out for a season, and further bans on the EFC 34.

I see plenty of downside to sue Dank, both financially and additional bans on the players.
I actually thought that they didn't receive any discounts for no significant fault, just for delays. They have been found guilty of doping. Adding other banned drugs will not change that or add to their penalty IMHO. Finances don't seem to be an issue for them too. They won't be after money form Dank and so his financial status is irrelevant. They'd just be after information to exonerate them. It would also help settle future challenges like Hal Hunter's as they would potentially be able to tell the players what they actually got.

And it would look like they truly were duped.

On the bolded:

As a foamer, one of the great tragedies of the CAS result was the mental visual of the Hirdites forlornly emptying all their bookmarked foamer posts that were going to be used in the moment of promised triumph.

So much counter attack up in a puff of smoke.

I have a number of Bomber supporting mates and do also like them (less so these days). But I just don't see any evidence that they were duped:

1) No simple explanation coming out of Bomberland; they have run with several different stories (TA-1, Thymodulin, duped, club defrauded, A3 spreadsheet, vitamins, everyone else was doing it, we are scapegoats). If they didn't intend this to happen, they would have one simple story which would work because it was true.

2) Hush money to Robinson, who was apparently going to be sued for what he alleged but actually got paid out of it.

3) No going after Dank, either now or way back then.

4) The ACC report directly fingers them (reread it now if you haven't, it's surprising)

There have been a number of narratives in play throughout these years, all of them have been discredited in some way or another, except the one narrative which says they intended to do it as a club and only got caught due to Dank's (and Hird's) associates. That's my 2c.

Agree they got no discount, Meant there be no deals to be done so they cop the full penalty if Dank came out and said I administered these substances and some were banned eg herexalin, which he was accused of administering. If the players received a discount and backdating so were playing round 1 there be less risk.

Could also open up more legal challenges if he gave more banned substances so additional bans were handed down.

Unless EFC we're absolutely sure he had information that would show he gave no banned or harmful substances and they could get they could get it. I think it's to big a risk. If he had such info why has he not already provided it?

Apart from a short term PR boost, that may back fire on them long term, I don't see what they have to gain going after dank.

Financially wait until the end of the year to see how much any legal would hurt, it be additional costs in a year where EFC may take a hit (less revenue, paying for top ups). edited to finish this statement.

Forensic examination has failed to reveal any greater truth than people at the club trusted that Dank and Robinson knew more about the WADA code than anyone else. I applaud the club for pushing the limits, I am massively disappointed in the club for failing to understand the risks.

We are not the only club he duped and we wouldn't have been the last. It is a performance industry and unless the league controls things then people will always push the limits.

The club was too naive to see that the WADA code is one grey area that you don't want to explore.

Fair comments AB.

My understanding is that the AFL "Integrity" guys warned Hird about the perils of the "grey" path he was heading down - but he did not listen.

Sadly the rest of the story is history.

No, that's Tania's job. She's the note taker.

It's about Australia. If the same evidence was found against Joe Bloggs the 800m runner from Russian everyone, including Essendon supporters, would demand a huge suspension. If it's one of our own we make excuses.

It's a pity that not many of those here would be old enough to remember Raelene Boyle getting beaten by a drug cheat (twice) at the 72 Olympics.
