Toast Peter Knights a Legend

I was fortunate enough to be standing at the race as the players came off after the 2015 GF and saw Peter hobble off the ground and up the race, smiling as always, especially after a 3 Peat, but truly hobbling with obvious hip and knee problems. Injury cruelled his career and cost him at least 1 if not 2 Brownlow medals. His 1978 GF was a game winning performance after being essentially knocked out early in the game, a true Legend of the HFC.

As an aside he would get fish and chips on a Friday night from my local. I was too petrified to speak to him.
When I shook his hands a couple of years ago at Team function It felt like I was a kid all those years ago.
I told hm he was my favourite player of all time and his response "you don't look old enough young fella to have seen me play"
You may not remember me, but I sure as hell remember you knightsy what a star and legend of this football club.

P.S he didn't have his glasses on to see all the wrinkles :D

At first I was afraid.....

Just a beautiful player to watch.
You could go to Hawthorn games in the 1969 - 1985 era and expect to see mark of the week every game.

If not for Lethal Leigh, he would have had 6 or 7 best & fairest awards.
That 2nd place in the 1976 Brownlow, after missing 7 games, is still amazing.

Would be the most exciting player in the game today if lacing them up now.
Extraordinary mark AND kick, brave like you wouldn't believe running forward or back into an aerial contest, and flew across the ground with the ball in hand.
When I think of VFL football it's duffle coats with 24 on the back, standing at footy grounds like Victoria Park cause no one sat down in the outer except for 1/4s and half time, struggling through a sea of bodies to get a steaming hot meat pie from the white vans parked inside the grounds and hoping to remember how to find my way back to where we had squeezed in......oh, and beer getting poured over my 9 year old head when goals went through for either side.
Good times, so lucky to have had a Knightsy as my hero.

I remember 2 classic grabs in the first quarter of the 1975 GF, one of which ended up on the cover of "Football Life" the following year…

Peter was a rep for Puma back in the day. Met him at a friend's dad's shoe shop up country Vic. As a young hawker I was pretty thrilled. I was a bit overawed, couldn't get anything meaningful out. Too starry eyed to even get an autograph. :(

Well deserved elevation. Lots of fond memories of Peter playing. Always spectacular.

Still works around the club, and I learned about the Tom Mitchell for pick 14 trade from him as I was leaving the Hawks Nest at Waverley last October.

Suffered a serious knee injury in the 71 second semi, otherwise would have been a four-time premiership player like Lethal.
