You'd be mad to get rid of Gill. I've never rated Sellar and don't think he's going to cut the mustard. Every time i've watched him he struggles to impose himself on any contest, which is a worry for a big man, even a young one. You will need Gill as your KP insurance no doubt about it. He can't kick to save himself, but he takes marks and has a red hot go. At least he can split (or fly over) a few packs, something i've never seen Sellar do to any extent.

Unfortunately, I doubt Hentschel will ever get to the level he was at before his shocking injury. Very few players who cop something like that do. He definitely deserves to remain on your list and at least get a run at it to prove he can get on the paddock and offer something though, and I sincerely hope he can still carve out an AFL career for himself.

If I was a Crows fan, I wouldn't want to be seeing the back of any of Goodwin, Edwards or McLeod. They still have good footy left in them, and you don't want a leadership vacuum similar to the one that has held Collingwood back a little this year.

Perhaps Neil Craig will bite the bullet and delist Gill?

Surely he will be looking at things from a long term perspective and I think we can all agree that we wont be winning a premiership with Gill in our forward line, as harsh as that may seem.

.........

i for one disagree - on the contrary, IMO, Gill can actually win us a premiership!

If we can keep him out on the park, and it depends on what week of his consistency cycle the grand final falls on. On recent form…

Round 17—6 disposals, 3 marks, 1 goal, AVERAGE
Round 18—18 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal, GOOD
Round 19—8 disposals, 4 marks, 2 goals, AVERAGE
Round 20—22 disposals, 11 marks, 5 goals, GOOD
Round 21—7 disposals. 4 marks, 0 goals, AVERAGE
Round 22—GOOD
EF—AVERAGE
SF—GOOD
PF—AVERAGE
GF—GOOD!!!

Looks like the stars align for the AFC come the 27th September 2008!!! Just have to make it now…

However, if by freak we happen to make it into the top 4 and by bigger freak, beat Geelong in the qualifying final, we’ll have to break the cycle by playing Gill somewhere in the week off, otherwise he’ll have his good game in the PF and play like crap in the GF…

Wow bullshit hypotheticals are fun :)

I know you posted at least partly in jest but, to a degree, Gill's game is one which cannot be measured purely on possessions. As we saw when we had balls bombed into to no-one if there is no contest in the air, you are screwed...Gill does this plenty of times and while he doesn't always mark it, at least he is a decent target.

Also, i am glad you cut him slack for last week and at least gave it an 'average' cos i defy any forward to do much with the crap supply our forwards got.

Could probably forgive his first game back as well...pretty hard to dominate a game straight up. So his only genuinely average game still had 2 goals.

I reckon he is playing well. He is not a superstar forward but he is doing a great job. It's not enough weeks to draw a form line. Be very interesting to see his next 3 weeks but if your prophecy re GF is proven correct i will be a very happy man!!

I was really only going on an average/good scale, otherwise round 20 would’ve been something like “excellent” and last week would’ve been “below average”, but not out and out poor. He was looking very dangerous in the first half when we were hitting him up on the lead.

Was semi in jest, and I know that performances for a guy like Gill can’t be measured in disposals. However, for the purposes of highlighting his performance/consistency (or anybody’s for that matter), disposals and particularly marks (important for a guy like Gill who gets the contested ones) are a decent enough indicator.

Prophecy!? Hehehe…like it! :thumbsu: I’ve actually given up on making them, mine are so tainted with bias that no matter how hard I try to think otherwise, they always end up with Adelaide winning the GF!!! :D

I hear ya:D

I've pencilled in a top 3 finish next year, Premiers in 2010, Back-to-back with a Dangerfield Brownlow added in for 2011.

You heard it hear first:thumbsu:

(My last ridiculous statement came true btw but i have upped the ante somewhat:o)

I think if Bassett goes and that is almost a certainty then Massie provides some flexibility for Craig and on the back of a good year that may save him

I reckon if we upgrade Petrenko, and that's all I can see ATS from the rookies, I think we'll need to delist/retire 7 or 8......my list remains:

1. Bassett
2. Biglands
3. Edwards - still servicable but apart from Bassett he's the easiest to replace :(
4. Jericho
5. McGregor - will retire IMO
6. Gallman
7. Campbell
8. Shirley - despite a great year

9. Gill /Massie

Why would we delist Edwards and Shirley?

Edwards is leading the Advertiser awards for the best Crows or Port player, and Shirley's last half of the year has been nothing short of excellent.

Biglands
Bassett
Jericho
McGregor
Gallman
Campbell

are almost certainties IMO.

Neither can I see any sense in delisting either of Gill or Massie.

I'm not convinced that we will delist more than 6, but if there is one more then that could well be Armstrong, the least performed of last year's draftee crop.

You wouldn't want to have to be the officials doing the cuts - it's a hard job this year.

Gill is, with Porps, one of our best two forwards. Hentschel may never play CHF again - his lack of mobility may mean his best possie is CHB (maybe FF). This could free up Bock to go to CHF. But if Trent doesn't get back in the side, Gill is our best CHF option. It's not like we have KPPs falling from the sky.

huge win? it was anything anything but, that's the point.
any more delusional, and you'll be our toots hibbert.

No the week before last with my Gill review .....do you think I am that delusional :p;)

a week after promising us your CHF options off the top of your head, and that is it? a guy who will prob never play CHF, a guy who will never prob play again, a ruckman, and a guy who still seems years away? that's it?

you might as well admit that there are no other options and be done with it.

OK you forced me to reveal my secret weapon ......CAMPBELL! our next CHF

This is the crux of it - Craig has said we'll be equally agressive this draft ...and how many did we move on last season 8-9??

The difficulty is that 4 of our better elderly players are all the same age and likely to go out together if we are not careful .......IMO 2 to go this year and 2 next year

Edwards / Bassett 2008

Goodwin / Macleod 2009

The difficulty with players like Shirley, Massie and even Doughty is who are the alternatives to get the required numbers?

I'd be surprised if Armstrong goes ......the only claim to his & Gallmans name being potentially raised is that they have been largely out of sight this year.

I know we made an excpetion with Obst in cutting the contract short but that's it .....it was an exception, and if the club decides to payout MacGregors 2nd year of his contract frankly I can't see the club paying out two contracts?

yeh, i don't see any 1st years being cut. that's just harsh. Armstrong deserves at least another year before fans start judging him.

Anyway, back on Hentschel, there was an article in the Advertiser this morning explaining, from the Club, Hentschel's selection for next year, but I can't find it on their website.

Check again this afternoon. Stories from The Advertiser seem to take forever to get uploaded to their "Super Footy" site. Not everything which gets printed makes it to the net - and that which does is usually at least 12 hours behind the dead tree edition.

My guess is that they're trying to limit the number of people prefering to obtain their news from the internet, without purchasing a copy of the dead tree edition.

There was also a small piece in The Herald Sun with Riedy saying it would take somethin "drastic" to happen for him not to be on our list next year.
